Thanksgiving Prep

20131125-095902.jpgSomething went seriously wrong at the Hotel Thompson.  Mommy asked daddy to dress the bird and prep it for cooking.  I’m not so sure this is what mommy meant for daddy to do.  Although it does look more interesting.  I have to admit that.

Or does this ‘dressing’ the bird equate to playing with your food?  Mommy always fusses at me when I play with my food.  hhmm – interesting how grown up humans get away with these things.

So much for ‘dressing’ the bird.  He’s kind of too cute to eat now.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Hannah

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Hannah (Green-Cheeked Amazon)

Age:  17

Location: Colorado

Web/Blog Page:  https://peacewithmylife.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I liked them! The rescue lady didn’t really want to give me up. But I jumped up on Mom’s finger and ran to her shoulder and wouldn’t get off. I liked these people; I knew that they just had to be MY new family!

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  When I finally let Mom scratch my head, and she did it just right, I knew I was going to love it here.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  Probably when I sassed Sugar just a little too much, and he thought I’d make a lovely bride. Ha! He doesn’t think THAT anymore. Yuck. I’m done with men.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? I’m a mamma’s girl! We have to hide our love from Sugar, though. Otherwise he’s mean to me. So Mom and I knoodle when he’s not looking.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  The breeder that first owned me thought that he could control my life, but the guy they put in my nest box to mate with me attacked me. Eventually, they gave me to the rescue because I wouldn’t let a guy near me after that. Why do humans think that they can control everything in our lives? Well, I’m here to tell you that I make my own decisions!

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Sugar

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Sugar (Goffin’s Cockatoo)

Age:   at least 25 years (as a rescue, we’re not sure, but he was born before the import ban of wild-caught birds)

Location:  Colorado

Web/Blog Page:  https://peacewithmylife.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I was so depressed at the rescue that I didn’t care much if I had new parents or not. The rescue had taken away my mate, and the boy I adored forever (a man, now) didn’t love me anymore. I was too sad to care.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  When they let me out of my cage to fly around the house, I knew that I wanted to stay and it would all be okay. Flying fixes everything!

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  Probably the time I bit mom so deeply that she bled a lot, cursed a little, and had to go to get a tetanus shot. I’ve got a powerful beak, you know. I’d bitten everyone by then, and no one liked me; I thought they were going to send me away like the boy did (*hangs head in shame*). I’m so happy they kept me. I don’t bite anymore. Much.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Definitely Mom! I spend a lot of time on her shoulder, and I supervise all her work on the computer. We usually eat together, too, which I just love! I test everything she eats!

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  They think that just because I’m old, I’m grown up. What are they thinking? I’m a cockatoo! We never really grow up!

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Ruby

 Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Ruby (African Grey)

Age:  16 years

Location:  Colorado

Web/Blog Page:  https://peacewithmylife.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I wondered if I would be allowed to grow out my feathers and fly. I was so excited to learn that I could! I was ready to leave my previous home and go with the new family. I figured I had nothing to lose!

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  Probably when my new parents got so concerned that I was too bored and lonely that they installed cable and gave me a TV! I was so excited – they must really love me! I like watching TV all day; I learn lots of new sounds and words.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  I can’t think of anything. I’m going to let Sugar answer that one next week; he has LOTS of those moments. I’m a good girl and don’t do that sort of thing (*bending over to preen a little*)

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Dad! We watch movies together sometimes, and he hangs out with me a lot. Talons down, it’s DAD!

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  I hate it when people think that I’m just babbling and don’t know what I’m saying. Sure, there are times I just like to play around with new sounds and roll them off my tongue, but if I’m talking to someone, then I mean what I say. We’re not just some sort of a recording device. We know what our words mean. Well, mostly.

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

Dear Bacon

20131208-211338.jpg

Dear Bacon – Who says that the natural order of things in nature have to be that we don’t get along?  My name is Gull and this is my close pal Gator.

We’re like two peas in a pod.  We often play in the water like this.  Gator protects me from other things in the water and we have fun.  Can you believe that it actually blows peoples minds when they see us like this?  Signed Born to be Different

Dear Born to be Different – Hey my friends.  I think that is absolutely wonderful to have that kind of friendship.

I’m sure the other animals in the water look at you like a two piece snack from KFC but as long Gator is there to protect you – awesomesauce!

.

20131208-211409.jpg

Dear Bacon – The humans.  They will pay for this get up.  I feel totally ridiculous.  The nerve to dress me up as some kind of twisted frog.  I think the look on my face tells you everything you need to know.  Do you have any ideas on how I can get the humans back?  Signed Feeling Froggy

Dear Feeling Froggy – WOW!  Now that is some sort of predicament my friend.  I feel you 100%.  Your humans really did have some nerve in dressing you like a Kermit want to be.  I don’t know whether to laugh or cry with you on that get up.  As far as pay back – evil piggy snorts.

The humans they do have to sleep at some point.  I’m sure you can think of so many different ways to bring down the wrath of Froggy upon them.  Just act innocent in whatever you decide.

P.S.  Can I borrow that outfit for Halloween?  Maybe I can snatch Miss Piggy with it.

Dear Bacon – 20131208-211436.jpgTalk about animal labor laws.  I often read about your life at the Hotel Thompson and how they make you ‘work for your food’ in a way.  Never complain again my friend.  My humans put me to work out in nature in concrete.  It’s a hard and tedious job… especially in this get up.  Help me please.  Signed Mason

Dear Mason – Oh snap.  Your humans weren’t playing any games were they my friend?  Bless your little heart.  Not only did they dress you but you have to wear those indestructible construction boots.  Shakes piggy head.  I’m so sorry pal.  I will *never* again complain about having to bring my dirty stuff to the laundry room.  Ever.

P.S.  Dad needs some help expanding the driveway.  When you get done with that project, can you help a human out?

Dear Bacon – 20131208-211508.jpgWhat?  Haven’t you ever seen a hamster with his lady working the pole?  Blondie is one of the best pole dancers out there.  I suggest this kind of get up for your bedroom pig.  You might get some girlfriends then.  HA!  Signed Boris

Dear Boris – OMP (oh my pig!)  My eyes!  What has been seen can not be unseen.  We really don’t need to see this my friend.  Although daddy was interested in that pole action, me and mom are not – snorts.  Ya’ll carry on in the privacy of your bedroom.  And don’t worry about me and girlfriends.  I have one 🙂

Hotel Thompson Accomodations

Sometimes the funniest things happen here at the Hotel Thompson.  Sometimes they are just too good to pass up.  It’s taken me all week to get myself together to post this blog.  Let me start at the beginning shall we.

On Friday nights, it’s not unusual for us to stay up late here and watch television shows… especially b-rated movies.  Rolls piggy eyes – sometimes those are so hilarious to watch.  Mom and dad usually let me stay up late with them until I get too tired.  This past Friday night was no exception.

We all stayed up until around 2AM.  Hard to believe my humans can stay up that late isn’t it?  Snorts.  We all got ready in our separate beds in our separate rooms.  Just about the time our heads touched the pillows, we were asleep.

Then around 3:30AM, it started.  Mouse Girl and Hemi, the two purr things here at the Hotel Thompson, thought it was an ideal time to sing to their people.  They were in the hallway where the acoustics are the best.  They sung and it echoed.  They sung and it still echoed.  Neither one of them have done this in sometime.  But it woke me up first.  So I do what I do best.  I started squealing.  Mom and dad thought I was joining in but I wasn’t.  I was telling the Purr Choir to shut it up because I need my beauty sleep.  But they didn’t.

They then woke up mom and dad.  Of course they played rock, paper or scissors to see which one would get up out of their comfy cozy bed to put a stop to the live orchestra.  Daddy loss – snorts.  He broke up the duo, gave them a treat and went back to bed.

.

Maybe thirty minutes later, Hemi decided to join them in bed.  He does this every night so it’s no big deal.  Hemi climbs up between mom and dad, settles in and snuggles to sleep.  But nope, not this night.  He was W.I.R.E.D.  I don’t know what he got into but he was jumping off mom, dad, the nightstands and the television stand.  Shakes piggy head.  So guess who got banished from the bedroom?  Yep, Hemi.

They thought then that everything was good and they could settle.  That’s when Mouse Girl tag teamed into the bedroom.  She has nerve after all of this to do her share of trouble.  She went into the bedroom and proceeded to knock everything off of the television stand and nightstands.  She got the wrath of mom and also got banished from the bedroom.

You would think that poor mom and dad had enough.  They did get a couple of hours asleep.  Then around 6:30AM something unnatural woke them both up.  Something we haven’t heard all Winter.  Something that sounds so beautiful – normally – but at the butt crack of dawn was like fingernails on a chalkboard.  There was a cute little bird that was right outside their bedroom window singing like there was no tomorrow.

I heard daddy ask mommy, “What kind of insane bird chirps before daylight?”  Mom’s reply, “A dead one.”  Snorts.  Of course she wouldn’t harm that little tweet bird.  But, it was a hilarious for this little piggy to hear.  I wonder if they will go to bed late tonight?  I got $20.00 on the birdy before dawn – you?  Snorts

Dear Bacon

20131106-104329.jpgDear Bacon,

My human thought she would bring me to work today.  As you can tell, neither one of us got a lot of work done.  Well, my mom didn’t.  I did because her desk was the most frequented visited cubicle that day.  I wonder why?  Signed Shrimp

Dear Shrimp,

Smiles and wipes piggy eyes.  Aren’t you just the most adorable, cutest little thing I’ve seen in a while.  I just want to rub that little belly of yours.  You must have really been tired little guy.  Maybe you should do more visits to work with mommy.  I think in no time you would have all of her co-workers wrapped around your little paws!

.

20131106-104634.jpg

Dear Bacon,

I know we are suppose to be enemies but we’re not.  We are buds.  He watches my back and I watch his.  We have the most interesting conversations at our house.  Why can’t we all just get along in the world like us?  Signed Tom and Jerry

Dear Tom and Jerry,

Ya’ll have a great point.  We *should* all just get along in this world.  There shouldn’t be anything saying that we can’t because of one thing or another.  Ya’ll are setting the best example – keep up the great work my friends!

.

20131106-104815.jpgDear Bacon,

I was this close to freedom before they caught me and put me back in lockdown.  I could taste freedom and it tasted pretty darn good.  Any suggestions for next time?  Signed Stretch

Dear Stretch,

I have to laugh buddy.  They say your kind is slow and not full of spunk but I think *they* are wrong.  You show the tenacity in making the ‘great escape’.  You were so close – how you got that far up on the fence is beyond me but way to go my friend.  Next time though, might I suggest just watching out for the gate to open.  It might be a safer way for your taste of freedom.

.

20131106-104842.jpg

Dear Bacon,

What?  Haven’t you ever seen a bird wearing a hoodie before?  It gets cold.  I don’t have a ‘fur coat’ like you do.  My feathers only provide so much for warmth.  I think it’s a great idea.  We should all have one, you think?  Signed Fun Times

Dear Fun Times,

I think it’s great!  You look warm, festive and ready to go meet the world in that hoodie.  I say don’t worry about what anyone else might think.  As long as you are warm and comfy, who cares!

.

20131106-104910.jpg

Dear Bacon,

I need help.  I know you have Bashful.  Bashful is like a happening international traveling pet rock.  My owner, he just keeps me in a cage and feeds me.  I don’t get that life of first class traveling or anything.  Any suggestions- can you help me out?  Signed Bug

Dear Bug,

I am so sorry little guy.  Your owner must not have gotten the parenting guide like I did with Bashful.  You have to have exercise.  Your owner needs to walk you or at least put a hamster wheel in your cage for exercise.  Does he take you out for social time, watching television?  Heck, if anything else, you need a friend.  You give him my number, I’ll email it back to you.  I’ll talk to him and see what we can come up with my friend.

.
