Spotlight Thursday – Meet Hannah

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Hannah (Green-Cheeked Amazon)

Age:  17

Location: Colorado

Web/Blog Page:  https://peacewithmylife.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I liked them! The rescue lady didn’t really want to give me up. But I jumped up on Mom’s finger and ran to her shoulder and wouldn’t get off. I liked these people; I knew that they just had to be MY new family!

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  When I finally let Mom scratch my head, and she did it just right, I knew I was going to love it here.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  Probably when I sassed Sugar just a little too much, and he thought I’d make a lovely bride. Ha! He doesn’t think THAT anymore. Yuck. I’m done with men.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? I’m a mamma’s girl! We have to hide our love from Sugar, though. Otherwise he’s mean to me. So Mom and I knoodle when he’s not looking.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  The breeder that first owned me thought that he could control my life, but the guy they put in my nest box to mate with me attacked me. Eventually, they gave me to the rescue because I wouldn’t let a guy near me after that. Why do humans think that they can control everything in our lives? Well, I’m here to tell you that I make my own decisions!

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

31 Days of Spook – Fort Pulaski

20131027-183131.jpg

Today I want to talk to you about a place that mom and dad have visited on Tybee Island. It’s called Fort Pulaski, a national monument, located at US Highway 80 E, Savannah, Georgia. Maybe it’s not full of ghosts, but if you close your eyes and listen hard enough perhaps you will still hear the sounds of battle.

The park is open daily from 9AM until 5PM. You can go on a guided tour or roam the grounds by yourself. Mom and dad decided to go by themselves and see what kind of trouble they could get into – go mom/dad.
20131027-183209.jpg

After you pay to enter the park, you drive over the Cockspur Island Bridge into the grounds. It’s kind of a dark picture to the right but the trees are gorgeous! Look at all of that rolling lovely green grass! So many places for this little porker to play – pets are welcomed 🙂

Then you start to see the fort itself – so massive! I don’t know why but mom was just astonished to the ‘moat’ that was around this huge fortress. Mom and dad said they were the only ones there for a bit and the silence from everything was kind of overwhelming.20131027-183243.jpg

It was like you could almost hear the gunshots in the background, the moans of soldiers and people talking. The wind was blowing and you could hear it singing in between the brick walls with the soft sounds of the water echoing. It was kind of eerie.

Fort Pulaski is huge. It was overcast this day so some of the pictures are not the best but hopefully you will enjoy them. Mom took this picture to the right as they were walking down to enter into the fort. It looks calm but mom/dad both said that the air was heavy.  They walked all the way down until the other side of the building.

20131027-183227.jpg

That’s where there was a bridge that they walked over to enter into the fort itself. For the building to be as old as it is (built in 1861), it is remarkably still intact. You do see some stonework falling inside of the casemates but as a whole, it is grand.

Fireplaces and windows are still standing as well as the cannons in the windows. You’ll even notice on the bottom of the cannon picture where the cannons could slide left/right for positioning of the firing.

20131027-183304.jpg

And how would you like to be a prisoner of the fort? Look to this picture to the left of the ‘beds’ they used. Wood slats. Comfy huh? Daddy tried one when mom ‘locked him up’ in prison. It was kind of hard – snorts.

.

And I saved the best picture until last.

20131027-183321.jpg The stairs to the top of the fort.

I’m not mentioning names but someone thought they would wobble up these torturous stairs to the top of the fort to take a peek. Notice that the stairs do not have handrails. It was a great view at the top and I would have a picture to share if only mom remembered to bring the camera – silly mom. And she wasn’t crawling back down to get the camera she said. And also let’s say that mom took the adventure of the stairs and that night it hurt in every place possible. That’ll teach mom not to climb and old fort like she was a teenager – snorts.

Oh, and another missed photo opportunity mom/dad made. They saw and met a beautiful white German Shepherd while visiting the Fort. She was so friendly and mom got to love on her for a while with her parents.

So the question remains. Is Fort Pulaski haunted? Mom asked one of the workers and she was told no. Is it spooky – yes. Do you pick up “feelings” of days gone – yes. Mom and dad both said they could close their eyes and hear and picture in their minds the activity that happened once upon a time.

Since mom/dad have been back home, I’ve done a lot of research on Fort Pulaski.  To my amazement, there have been many encounters with the unknown at the Fort over the years.  There was a story about a mother and son visiting the fort that were crossing over the draw bridge to enter into the fort.  They met a Confederate sentry dressed in uniform with his sword.  They spoke to him about his outfit and the fort.  The mother then inquired about a restroom and he advised that he could not leave his position to show her.  She thanked the man and with her son she continued into the fort to ask about the restrooms.  There she was advised that the restrooms were at the entrance.  She became upset and told the man about the soldier she spoke to at the drawbridge.  The man advised her that they had no soldiers dressed in Confederate uniforms at the fort.

Then there was a time that a group of Confederate re-enactors placed a wreath at the graves in 1994.  They then settled down for the night and camped out.  During the night, a young 12 year old boy couldn’t sleep and was walking around the fort.  Nearing the graves, he saw a figure of a Confederate soldier in uniform on his knees near the grave they had put the wreath.  The soldier had his hat in his hand, then stood and faded away into the air.

Then during further research, I learned that an actor that you might have heard of did a movie at Fort Pulaski back in 2009.  The movie was called The Conspirator and the actor was Robert Redford.

It’s up to you to decide if it’s haunted or not.  Maybe someone needs to let the worker at the shop know that there has been some cases of mysterious sightings.  It was definitely an adventure that mom/dad would be willing to do again… of course minus the stairs – snorts.

Travels in the South

Everyone should have that one great Mexican restaurant that they always have on their ‘go to’ list when nothing else sounds good for dinner.  You know what I mean.  There is always the constant, “Where do you want to eat”, conversation going on here at the Hotel Thompson.  It’s daily and it always ends with, “It doesn’t matter.  Whatever you want.”  I piggy swear that sometimes they need to write all of the local restaurants down on pieces of paper, fold them and put them in a box.  When these nights come up about where do you want to eat, randomly pick a piece of paper out of said box – problem solved.

This was one of those nights where mom/dad just automatically skipped the conversation and went straight to their stand by of Mexican food.  It’s a no brainer.  They don’t even have to decide what to order because they always get the same thing and split the meal.  What is it you ask?

This wonderful meal is called Tacos De Alambre.  It’s made with flour tortillas, grilled steak, onions and bell peppers.  Mom also gets her Tacos De Alambre topped with Chihuahua cheese.  This is a great Mexican melty yummy cheese.  Can you say delicious?

Dear Bacon

Dear Bacon – I don’t understand.  I think I need help.  You see.  Every time I smile, my eyes crossed.  I’ve tried holding my face straight.  I’ve tried closing my eyes and opening them at the last minute.  I’ve tried even holding my breath.  Nothing works.  This is the look I get every single time.  What in the world am I doing wrong?  Can you help?  Signed Happy Cross Eyes.

Dear Happy Cross Eyes – You know my friend, sometimes life throws us twists and turns. It’s how we handle these mountains and curves that makes us who we are.  Instead of dwelling on your look, embrace it my friend.  Not everyone can look as happy as you.  I would market that look – just think of your face and smile on coffee cups, calendars, posters – the possibilities are endless – and so is the money.  Make it work my friend. And do me a favor when you hit it big – remember this little oinker that believed in YOU!

Dear Bacon – Do you need a kiss?  Cause I’m here for YOU my sexy little piggy.  When my human asked me what I wanted to be this year for Halloween, I knew.  A kiss just for YOU.  You help all of these people in the world and I want to help you.  What do you say?  You wanna dress up with me?  Signed Chocolate Kisses

.

Dear Chocolate Kisses – What can I say?  That’s a proposition that I just can’t turn down.  And why would I, right?  So I tell you what I’m going to do.  I’m going to get mommy to dress me up as a giant peanut butter cup … cause you know chocolate and peanut butter go together, right?  I’ll keep you posted on my outfit okay.  Until then, Happy Halloween..

Dear Bacon – There we were hanging out in the house having a great time while the humans were away.  Yaki – he might have drunk too much.  That brother of mine – he can’t hold his milk like he used to do in the old days.  This is how the humans found us.  Of course, they thought exactly what you are thinking, that I was dunking his head in the throne.  Nah, I wouldn’t do that to Yaki.  I was holding his ears back while he was throwing up.  See, I’m the nice guy.  Signed Teri and Yaki

Dear Teri and Yaki – I am shocked and somewhat astonished – perhaps even surprised.  I will admit it.  I did think you were baptizing him in the water.  I was wrong for sure.  That is very nice of you to help your brother out of a bad situation.  I say bravo and well done.  I think you may even get the big brother of the year award..

Dear Bacon – Aaww crappers!  There I was sunning myself in the open air minding my own business. I must have fell asleep.  I was so warm and content.  Then when I woke up, I was stuck on a rock and was in a hard place.  The water had went down and I literally was wobbling there.  The only thing I could move were my feet and head.  I wobbled forward.  I wobbled backwards.  Finally, I rocked enough that I fell into the water.  Trust me – you don’t want to do this.  Signed Wobbles

Dear Wobbles – oh my friend.  I’m so glad you were finally able to wobble off that rock.  I can just imagine how you would feel stuck there.  And you are right – this pot belly does not want to be stuck on a rock and hard place.  Take care my friends.

Dear Bacon – Why do humans want to dress us anipals up this time of the year?  Can you answer that for me please.  I mean I get it that they want to dress up, go door to door and have parties.  But, why us anipals?  Why do we have to get pulled in to their hysteria?  Let us stay at home alone and do our thing.  Cause what the humans don’t understand it that we will party our own way, am I right?  Signed Ted in Disguise

Dear Ted in Disguise – AMEN!  You said it perfectly.  Yes I agree that the humans don’t understand that we will celebrate this Halloween holiday in our own right.  Let them go out and do their thing – we will do our thing.  Take for instance me.  This little oinker has worked all month long on my 31 Days of Spook.  By Halloween, I’m going to be exhausted and barely moving.  When the humans go out for the night, I’m hitting the big bed, turning on the big television, setting the Select Comfort to around 65 and that’s where you will find me snoozing and snoring.  Is it Halloween yet?  Have fun on your night my friend.  And let me tell you something – I think you are dressed up enough with those glasses.  I love them!

Journey with Friends – Week 41

Welcome my friends to our weekly issue of Journey with Friends.  This is a time that we come together for support, for encouragement, for fellowship – all with one single goal in mind – to live better.  Welcome to our journey to share our goals and our accomplishments and our disappointments and frustrations.

Together we can do this!

Sunday, October 8, 2017 –  It looks like we are all getting better here at the Hotel Thompson – YAY!  The hub unit had the cold and then he so nicely gave it back to me again.  A family that shares together, right?  Hopefully this cold is behind us now… I hope.  It’s raining outside today and the next couple of days so we plan on getting rest.  Miles Moved: 1.10

Monday, October 9, 2017 –  The rain has come in and settled here for a couple of days. I kind of like it.  We haven’t had rain here in some time so it’s nice to have had it these past couple of days.  It’s that time of the month to do my statistical monthly end reports.  I foresee me getting these out of the way this week and just trying to maintain.  I may not be moving much but at least my eating is still good.  Miles Moved: 1.14

Tuesday, October 10, 2017 –  aarrghh – I can’t believe I didn’t put on my Apple i-Watch this morning.  I felt so naked all day and had to depend on my i-Phone to calculate my movements throughout the day.  I have been one of *those* people – addicted to their i-Watch LOL.  Miles Moved: 1.00

Wednesday, October 11, 2017 –  The paperwork continues at work.  Should be finished with everything tomorrow.  The hub unit is doing so much better – yay!  He just has a mild cough now and that is getting better each day – thank goodness.  Miles Moved: 1.10

Thursday, October 12, 2017 –  YES!  Finished the month end paperwork.  Now I can breathe.  It’s 4 weeks from yesterday until my surgery.  It’s getting closer.  I’m getting my medical compression garments in now, trying to clean the house, trying to get some meals frozen that will be easy to put in the oven to warm up and tying up loose ends for the time I will be out of work.    Miles Moved: 1.32

Friday, October 13, 2017 –  Trying to  play catch up at work with things that took a second seat while finishing month end reports.  I’m so ready for the weekend!  Miles Moved: 0.67

Saturday, October 14, 2017 –  Ran a few errands today to get out with Jim.  I’m still trying to find a bed rest for my bed to use after surgery.  Any ideas where I can get one?  They use to be everywhere and now they are hard to find.  It’s the bed rest cushion/pillow that you lean against in bed to sit up and read, etc.  I can’t lay flat for a while so I thought this pillow might help a bit.    Miles Moved: 0.55

This week walked: 6.88

TOTAL 2017 Miles:  487.20

❤ small goals turn into big accomplishments ❤

Boo! Givens Castle

Today we are focusing on a spook in Chicago ion an area where my Aunt Tina lives.  Buckle in for some bumps and scares.  Enjoy – don’t be scared now – BOO!

Givens Castle / Beverly Unitarian Church

The Givens Castle was originally built in 1886 as a residence by Robert Givens. Givens was real estate developer and wanted the house to be a replica of a castle in his native Ireland.  Some say that Givens built the home for his fiancee who died before the house could be finished.  Maybe that accounts for why Givens only lived in the castle for 8 years.

Around 1894, the castle turned into the Chicago Female College. It is reputed to have had a student die in the 1930’s from flu.

During the 1960’s, the castle was turned into the Beverly Unitarian Church.  A janitor once reported that he had a conversation with a woman who disappeared from sight. Their conversation was about the house and how much it had changed over the years.  The janitor saw no footprints outside in the snow and all of the doors were locked.  Where did she go?  Was it the student that passed away from the flu?

The pastor of the church at the time was a woman who claimed she saw a pair of hands touch her husband’s waist.  Even more, the pastor thought the hands were those of a woman.  The husband never felt a thing.  During this time as well, there were reports of a candle being seen through windows when nobody was present in the building.

Unexplained noises have also been attributed to the ghost and a former pastor said that he often tried to track down the source of the noises but was never able to.

The story is courtesy of Chicago Ghost blogger.

Boo! House in the Woods

Today I have a question for you.  You see this house off in the woods.  It’s raining something fierce.  You need shelter because you don’t have a raincoat let alone an umbrella.  The storm is getting worse and now lightning is ripping across the sky and thunder is booming and echoing in the woods.  So the question is my pretty’s – do you go into this house for shelter waiting for the storm to pass?  Oh and let me add a little twist to the equation.  This house is reputed to be haunted.  So what do you say?  Are you up for a little adventure my friends?
