Spotlight Thursday
Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY. This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better. Some of them, you may already know. We hope that you enjoy this series!
Name: Ruby (African Grey)
Age: 16 years
Location: Colorado
Web/Blog Page: https://peacewithmylife.com/
What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents? I wondered if I would be allowed to grow out my feathers and fly. I was so excited to learn that I could! I was ready to leave my previous home and go with the new family. I figured I had nothing to lose!
What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home? Probably when my new parents got so concerned that I was too bored and lonely that they installed cable and gave me a TV! I was so excited – they must really love me! I like watching TV all day; I learn lots of new sounds and words.
What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home? I can’t think of anything. I’m going to let Sugar answer that one next week; he has LOTS of those moments. I’m a good girl and don’t do that sort of thing (*bending over to preen a little*)
Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Dad! We watch movies together sometimes, and he hangs out with me a lot. Talons down, it’s DAD!
What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you? I hate it when people think that I’m just babbling and don’t know what I’m saying. Sure, there are times I just like to play around with new sounds and roll them off my tongue, but if I’m talking to someone, then I mean what I say. We’re not just some sort of a recording device. We know what our words mean. Well, mostly.
Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

I used to have a cockatiel named R.J. He thought he was human.

I’m pretty sure our birds think they are superior to us humans! Cockatiels are so full of personality!

Ruby, loved your interview! You are quite a character, and I know what you mean about “talking” My Mama birdsirts Cockatiel named Dude, and they have amazing conversations. Your new pal, Fiona

Oh yes! Flying is everything, but talking is fun, too. I can speak pretty well, but on my own terms. I also like sound effects — Dropping bombs, smoke alarm (not mom’s favorite), evil cackles – they’re all fun.

Ruby is a gorgeous girl! My brother and his wife have an African Grey named Sydney who has a huge vocabulary and catalog of sounds. They also have a parrot named Jack, 3 cats, a dog, and a rabbit. 🙂
Ruby, you are quite photogenic!

Reblogged this on Peace With My Life and commented:
Our African Grey, Ruby, was spotlighted on Bacon Thompson’s blog! She was so excited to be included in all the fun. Our animal community has been following Bacon for several years because we know how smart pigs are. We can’t have them as pets in our city, so we enjoy hearing about other people’s experiences. Check out Ruby’s post, and see if you like a little Bacon this morning! Who knew they could be so funny?

Hi Ruby, of course you do not just babble! I read about Alex – another Grey Parrot – and his amazing intelligence. It’s a rather sad story, but he could even convey to the scientist who kept him that he wanted to go out and fly into a tree …

Ruby isn’t quite as verbal as Alex, but she sees herself as mama to our family. She keeps the cats and dogs in line! It hurts though, when I am leaving for work and she says, “don’t go! Stay.” I wish I could.

I was friends with a cockatoo who frequently boarded at the vet’s where I worked and Sidney used to sit on my shoulder. I told him if he didn’t stop biting my necklace he would have to go back in his cage. He bit it again and when I told him he was going in his cage, he laid his bill against my cheek and humbly said, “Sorry.” Yep, you know what you’re saying, I am positive! Very nice to meet you.

That’s right! Ruby can Express herself similarly. She doesn’t like to apologize,
But she loves to talk to the other animals. She’ll Call the dogs by name, tell the cockatoo to shut up, etc.
