Spotlight Thursday – Meet Sugar

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Sugar (Goffin’s Cockatoo)

Age:   at least 25 years (as a rescue, we’re not sure, but he was born before the import ban of wild-caught birds)

Location:  Colorado

Web/Blog Page:  https://peacewithmylife.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I was so depressed at the rescue that I didn’t care much if I had new parents or not. The rescue had taken away my mate, and the boy I adored forever (a man, now) didn’t love me anymore. I was too sad to care.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  When they let me out of my cage to fly around the house, I knew that I wanted to stay and it would all be okay. Flying fixes everything!

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  Probably the time I bit mom so deeply that she bled a lot, cursed a little, and had to go to get a tetanus shot. I’ve got a powerful beak, you know. I’d bitten everyone by then, and no one liked me; I thought they were going to send me away like the boy did (*hangs head in shame*). I’m so happy they kept me. I don’t bite anymore. Much.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Definitely Mom! I spend a lot of time on her shoulder, and I supervise all her work on the computer. We usually eat together, too, which I just love! I test everything she eats!

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  They think that just because I’m old, I’m grown up. What are they thinking? I’m a cockatoo! We never really grow up!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Penny Mayhem and Zero Dark Thirty

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Penny Mayhem and Zero Dark Thirty

Age:  Penny is 3, Zero is 8 months

Location:  Chicago, IL

Web/Blog Page:  http://markingourterritory.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  Penny – “Let’s get ready to rumble!”      Zero – “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  The older dog is always the welcoming committee at home. When Penny curled up with Eko, and when Zero curled up with Penny they were both officially family.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  Penny lives in one constant “Now I’ve done it” moment. A few pillows have spontaneously combusted while in proximity to Zero, but he thankfully doesn’t take after his sister in his appetite for destruction.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Dad’s the disciplinarian, so the pups know to go for mom for easy treats and comfort

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  People maintain Zero and Penny aren’t lap dogs, but they are quite determined to prove the world wrong.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Simson

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Simson – but my humans call me Simmie.

Age:  3.5 years old so I have a lot of energy!

Location:  Just outside Stockholm in Sweden

Web/Blog Page:  https://ladyfi.wordpress.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents? I was only 17 months old when I came to live with my new parents, my two new human small people and another dog (my aunt) called Ruby – so I was a bit nervous at first and shy.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  Well, I had never been allowed upstairs before so my mum and Ruby taught me how to go upstairs so that I could sleep on the humans’ bed. I knew then that I had found a slice of heaven!

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  I’m quite a good boy, but had a few toilet accidents inside the house when I was younger. Also, I’ve eaten sandwiches off plates and my mum was very angry with me, so I don’t do it anymore. My humans always let me lie on them and they stroke me so I know how much they love me anyway.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Well, Mum works at home a lot so I spend a lot more time with her and she takes me and Ruby for lovely, long walks where I can run off the leash, so I think she is closest to me. If I look sad and bat my eyelids, then she will forgive me… 😉

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  Humans think I’m very goofy – but that’s just the outside. I’m actually a very gentle and clever dog.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Harley Quinn

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Harley Quinn

Age:  9 months

Location:  Florida

Web/Blog Page:  https://www.facebook.com/harleyqbully

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents? OMG…they’re giants!

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  The Mommy and the Daddy came 3,000 miles to get me and took me home with them on an AIRPLANE.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  I ate mommy’s brand new baseboards right after the condo remodel.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? I’m a Daddy’s girl, through and through.  We watch TV together in his recliner, and he takes me to breakfast and the dog park every Saturday while Mommy sleeps in.   Mommy is the one who takes me to the vet.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?   People see my face and think I’m all “sugar and spice and everything nice”, but I’m a tomboy who’s really more “snips and snails and puppy dog tails”.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Lucy

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Lucy Howell McCormick

Age:  seven years

Location:  Mustang Island, Texas

Web/Blog Page:  http://johnwhowell.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  Well, I was a rescue from San Antonio and my mom met me at an adoption event. She was looking at another and my thought was she looks like the kind of person who will love me forever. I went up to her and the rest is history. (My secret was giving her a kiss)

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  I met my dad and he said, “This is the most beautiful fur person on Earth.” I knew that I had arrived.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  One night there were a lot of people over for drinks and canapés . Someone suggested going onto the deck to see the moon. While they were gone my sister and I ate everything we could find. Although I enjoyed the food I did think there would be a consequence. Turns out a visit to the vet was the only punishment. We never got another chance to do it again.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why?  I would say my mom. She is smaller than dad and I can fit nicely on her couch when she is on it too. Old dad takes too much room. Mom always welcomes me when it is time for a snuggle.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?   Because I’m a boxer  and look like a bulldog people think I’m a bulldog. I get a number of people doubting I’m a boxer especially since I’m white in color. Of course, the minute they come near I give them the boxer greeting which includes a big kiss.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Bailey

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:   Bailey McCormick

Age:  Seven Years

Location:  Mustang Island, Texas

Web/Blog Page:  http://johnwhowell.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  It was so long ago. I was born on Mustang Island and went to my forever home when I was just eight weeks old. I see old photographs and believe I was a happy  puppy. I can’t recall when I first laid eyes on my parents, but I can tell you they sure loved me as evidenced in all the photos and the fact I am totally spoiled.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  My earliest memory is of being called Princess. I wasn’t so sure of what that meant but finally figured out that it was a term of endearment. I think it also may be a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that I am very special and know it.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  I watched as Lucy, my sister  decided to clean off a table full of snacks. She forced me to help her and then when it was done our humans came into the room and were totally shocked. We had never done anything like that before. I tried to explain that I was a victim but I still ended up at the vet.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? I think  dad. He seems to be more willing to have me on his lap. I’m thinking it is because his lap is bigger and I’m a large dog. I know you must wonder what I’m doing on a lap in the first place. Well, you see there are times when even we big dogs need some assurance that things are okay. He is always willing to have me on him.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?   Since I’m a boxer I have had people mistake me for a pit bull. I don’t even know any pit bulls so, I really don’t understand how they get confused. I am very gentle but these people act like I’m going to lunge after them. I am always on my leash so I really don’t understand the concern. I think for a joke sometime I’m going to growl and see what happens.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Murli

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Murli (I only come and react when called Murli, but Mum has other names for me like: Mi, Miez, Peeps, Feepsy, Schatz (=Treasure), Maus (=Mouse), Mau, Moo, Mauz, Flausch (=Fluff). )

Age:  11 (B-day iz August 17, 2005) 😸

Location:  Graz, Austria (We livez in da center of our city)

Web/Blog Page:  https://freecatlady.wordpress.com/   Mum Natascha and me have this blog as a way to connect with our furends, and share a bit from our life and about ourself with them and everyone interested.  We made so many really wonderful human and furry furends through da blog and we loves to make new lovely furends!

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents? Me was a tiny small kitty, da last one of my siblings who still was in da foster pawrents home. Mum Natascha founds me through a work colleague of hers, who tolds her about a lil black kitty needing a furever home. As da day to meet came… Me was in a little box within a carrier, and completely focused on playing around in there with some toys. But then suddenly,  Mum was there, sitting down in front of da open carrier, but with enough space between me and her, because she didn’t want to frighten me.  Me stopped playing instantly and looked at her fur a moment before coming out, right to da hand her was stretching out to me. Me said “Meeep!” and instantly thought that she smells nice. Me thought “Who iz dis? Me likes her!” Then me climbed into her arms, not feeling afraid at all. Me just liked her right away fur some reason. I didn’t even know what was going on anyway, but me wasn’t afraid at all and me felt safe with her.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  Right from da first day I was home with her, I didn’t want to leave her side. It was da way me felt instantly loved and cared about. When I spent da first hours in ma new furever home on Mums lap, or in her arms, me just felt safe and loved, like you feel with your Mummy. I knew from then on, me had found home, my furever home.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   hehe, me never got in trouble with Mum, her just can’t be mad at me Da biggest mess I ever made was causing a full container with flour to fall on da kitchen floor. It was epic! Because after I caused it to fall from  da counter, me had to explore da mess of course. I found it hilarious. Me laid down in da mess, so there was flour everywhere! Little paw prints in da flour and on other places. Me was suddenly more like a tuxedo kitty, than a black kitty. Mum being too worried for me to even take pics of that mess, just started cleaning me up first thing. Her was worried me could breath in da flour and have trouble with it. She was also worried it would irritate my eyes. But me was fine, though it took a while to turn me back into a black kitty

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Mum iz my only pawrent, but me haz a grandpaw (Mums Dad). I haz both of them wrapped around my paws completely They just really love me. But I have Mum wrapped around my paws even more maybe, because she will drop everything instantly if me wants or needs anything.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  Me thinks that humans who dont know me underrestimate how smart I am. But that goes for all animals. Some humans, mostly from other more superstitious parts of Europe and da world think that I’m bad luck because I’m a black kitty. But Mum always says me brings only luck, love, happiness and a bond for eternity. Just like all other animals too

As you can see, me was kind of a black tabby as kitten. But when me got ma grown up fur, it was replaced with mostly black fur. But in da sun you can still see some stripes when you look closely. And da fur on some parts of me looks almost red brown in da sun.  I like to sleep above Mums pillow.  I love hanging out at the windows and watch the birds and da humans in da street below. Mum and Grandpaw made all da windows safe fur me and he build those frames for da screen himself. Iz a wire grid, but it has some kinda coating to make it smooth. And then da netting to keep out insects, especially because of bees, hornets and wasps, so me cant be stung. This is ma fav grey mousie. Iz da oldest and me does not give it up. I loves all ma toys, but me still loves da old grey mousie da most MOL!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Kessy

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Kessy – Though – which real name the cat has is a secret among the cat community.

Age:  Nearly 8 (7 years and ten months), yes I am a big girl, no kitten anymore, no matter what my female slave says.

Location:  Hannover, Germany

Web/Blog Page:  I do not blog, I am a snob, I am a deity, after all, I let blog – my female slave does blog, though.  inhannover.wordpress.com

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  Parents? Oh, you mean my slave? Strange fat human, why does she come over and disturb me in my basket when there are all the other cats she can interact with? Oh, she brings a present, good. Still, not showing too much appreciation, just a majestic nod – or what is the feline equivalent. Good, she leaves again.  Then a strange thing happened. The nice lady from the shelter shoved me into a basket (one of those things she took me and all my fellow inmates to the vet with) and brought me to a strange weird place. She let me out of the basket and I fled and jumped at the window, dang it was closed! But there was a second door. I sped past that fat human again and searched shelter under what I call now the big cat bed. There was a white and black tom, but he seemed ok-ish. He did not growl and not hiss. He just blinked. Cool guy. I settled there. I heard the slave say something to the not so nice any more lady from the shelter – and then they fell silent. We four waited with baited breath – but nothing happened. The humans let me be, The lady from the shelter even forgot me when she went home.  Later that day I heard the wood about my head creak and the tom went out and joined the fat slave on the bed. I jumped out and went into the third room of the apartment, where I found a Kessy sized cave, in which I curled up. All my friends were missing. Later at night I ventured back, the tom lay at the feet of the fat human. He was really friendly. The human spoke to me – so I fled again. That was my first day at the new home. And several days more.

What was  the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  When I hid from the human slave under the cover of the sofa and she brought me presents and laid them in front of the opening and then left me to it. Then I knew I had found my very own slave. She even played with me and gave me treats despite not being allowed to caress me at first.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   When I brought out a hairball on the freshly done covers on the big cat bed. I have done that several times, and the slave has the impertinence to try to shove me on the ground to vomit there. But most times she is too late.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? There is only one slave at my home and she is firmly wrapped around my paw. Unless she decides to take me to the vet. She should know better by now. I have left some very stinky reminders for her that I do not like being put into that box and being brought there. Last time they even stole my teeth! My pride and joy! But apart from this strange affinity to the vet she is a good slave and gives me treats galore and plays with me. She even feeds me grass stems now that I find it difficult to plug them myself (your own fault woman).  Ok, my teeth hurt that much that I refused to eat, so maybe she did have a point.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  That I am tiny at heart. I am only tiny compared to human bodies. I am a tiger – or a lioness …Or maybe it is my fur colour (color in your part of the world) – it appears to be rather black-ish – but I am mainly red-brownish – which the sun reveals.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Noel, The Christmas Cat

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Noel, The Christmas Cat

Age:  10

Location:   Annapolis, Maryland, USA

Web/Blog Page:  http://dogdaz.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I was really scared and really sick, but the humans did not know that yet. I just wanted to hide. I had been on my own for 9 months already and all this commotion made me afraid. Then these humans took me from my cage into a box into a room where they made me feel better and they hugged me and loved me. I thought that this could be OK but I still was not sure about those humans.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  My new Mom held me for weeks and gave me medicine and held me more. Slowly, I realized that she was never going to let me go anywhere else and she was always going to take care of me and that this was my place forever. Mom is the only person that I let pick me up and turn me upside down like she did when I was first here at the Zoo and very sick. She protects me from the other animals in the house (especially that mean Stella cat) and makes sure I have safe places to call my own. If that is not home, what is?

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   Mom says that I am not the sharpest tack in the pack (whatever that means). Because I have feline herpes and not socialized until almost a year old, she thinks that it provided me with special powers, unlike other cats. For example, I don’t like cat litter so I don’t use the same toilet as the other cats. It took awhile for me to teach Mom that I will use weewee pads in my preferred spots and though I still overshoot them from time to time, I don’t think that’s bad, is it? Truly, I don’t think about much. Mom doesn’t get mad at me ever because she knows that I am special. I live primarily in the living/dining room and kitchen (where the yummy stuff is) and mostly Mom has made it safe so that my big fluffiness can’t get hurt, or break too many things. I don’t really understand the “oh no, now I’ve done it” thing because everything I do is purrfect, for a cat like me. It is all the other cats that get in trouble or try to get me into some, but I am special, and I know to run and hide when they do stupid stuff like knock over plants or face off with the little dog. Not me!

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? My Mom is the most important human in the house, as she says it should be. Everyone that lives here says that I am the most beautiful, sweet, giant white cat, they know and they all brush me (because I shed white stuff all year round) and pet me. I prefer Mom to all others but if one of my human family is sitting quietly on MY couch, I will talk to them and ask them for a brushing or a treat. Then usually I run away until Mom comes. I do like the big black dog, she is quiet too. I do my best to stay away from the pesky youngsters. Nine and Mini, who try to unthrone me from the top of the cat tree, or the blonde dog who chases me down the hall. The new little dog is smaller than I am, so I kind of think he is ok, but I am not sure yet.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  People thank that I am aloof because I am scared. If they would just be quiet I will come to them (maybe). I have a special sense that tells me when it is ok to come out of my hiding spots. I am a keen judge of character and Mom uses me as a barometer to see if the kid’s friends are worthy of being on my couch. I am a simple cat, with simple desires, if people would just be patient.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Kona

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Kona

Age:  7

Location:  Southern California

Web/Blog Page:  http://tailsbythesea.wordpress.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I had been pulled out of a high-kill shelter in San Diego by Second Chance Dog Rescue and was living with my foster parents. My adopting mom walked in the door to meet me, and I walked up to her, stood on my hind legs, and put my paws on her chest. When she sat down, I walked over to her and put my head in her lap. The foster mom told my mom that I had never approached anyone like that before, and that this dog had made his choice. I knew this was going to be my mommy, and I let her know it!

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  A few days after I came to my new home, mom and I were at the dog park. I was playing with a group of dogs, running around and having fun, when I stopped and looked around for my mom. I couldn’t find her, and got scared. She was watching me, and when we made eye contact, I smiled and ran towards her, just like in those love story movies 🙂 She and I both bonded at that moment – we both remember it clearly.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   I had never had an accident in the house, and was proud of it. One day, while mom was at work, I had a bad tummy ache and couldn’t hold it. I felt soooo bad when mom got home and saw my boo boo, my head was down and she just gave me a hug and cleaned it up. She knew I didn’t mean to do it.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why?  I think I have my mommy wrapped more. She and I are so closely bonded, and when I give her my sad look, her heart hurts. On the other side of that, I come and sit close to her when she’s hurting, too.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  My daddy sometimes thinks that I automatically understand human behavior. In other words, he gets mad at me cuz I don’t automatically know how to do things, or I don’t understand why I’m being punished. Mom has to remind him that I’m a dog, and dogs need to be trained, and it takes time. He’s getting better, though. Mom says I’m teaching him patience 🙂
