Spotlight Thursday – Meet Hannah

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Hannah (Green-Cheeked Amazon)

Age:  17

Location: Colorado

Web/Blog Page:  https://peacewithmylife.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I liked them! The rescue lady didn’t really want to give me up. But I jumped up on Mom’s finger and ran to her shoulder and wouldn’t get off. I liked these people; I knew that they just had to be MY new family!

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  When I finally let Mom scratch my head, and she did it just right, I knew I was going to love it here.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  Probably when I sassed Sugar just a little too much, and he thought I’d make a lovely bride. Ha! He doesn’t think THAT anymore. Yuck. I’m done with men.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? I’m a mamma’s girl! We have to hide our love from Sugar, though. Otherwise he’s mean to me. So Mom and I knoodle when he’s not looking.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  The breeder that first owned me thought that he could control my life, but the guy they put in my nest box to mate with me attacked me. Eventually, they gave me to the rescue because I wouldn’t let a guy near me after that. Why do humans think that they can control everything in our lives? Well, I’m here to tell you that I make my own decisions!

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Sugar

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Sugar (Goffin’s Cockatoo)

Age:   at least 25 years (as a rescue, we’re not sure, but he was born before the import ban of wild-caught birds)

Location:  Colorado

Web/Blog Page:  https://peacewithmylife.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I was so depressed at the rescue that I didn’t care much if I had new parents or not. The rescue had taken away my mate, and the boy I adored forever (a man, now) didn’t love me anymore. I was too sad to care.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  When they let me out of my cage to fly around the house, I knew that I wanted to stay and it would all be okay. Flying fixes everything!

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  Probably the time I bit mom so deeply that she bled a lot, cursed a little, and had to go to get a tetanus shot. I’ve got a powerful beak, you know. I’d bitten everyone by then, and no one liked me; I thought they were going to send me away like the boy did (*hangs head in shame*). I’m so happy they kept me. I don’t bite anymore. Much.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Definitely Mom! I spend a lot of time on her shoulder, and I supervise all her work on the computer. We usually eat together, too, which I just love! I test everything she eats!

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  They think that just because I’m old, I’m grown up. What are they thinking? I’m a cockatoo! We never really grow up!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Gypsy Keen

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Gypsy Keen

Age:  3.5 years

Location:  Southeast Virginia

Web/Blog Page:  http://www.thesedaysofmine.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  My parents discovered me behind their business when I was around 2 months old. My dad saw me first.  I was shivering and thin, and I just wound myself around his ankles and meowed at him.  He doesn’t know too much about kitties, so he was afraid to try to pick me up.  He called my mom on her cell phone (she was inside the building), and she came outside.  When she saw me, she immediately reached down and picked me up. She could tell I was friendly – and scared. She cuddled me and talked sweetly to me. I fell in love with both of them immediately.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  I just knew from the beginning.  They tried to determine if I belonged to someone: they put up flyers, called the vets’ offices and the animal shelters. But, the entire time, they were loving me and taking care of me.  After a few days, they decided that I was theirs and took me to the vet to be checked. Thankfully, I got a clean bill of health!

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   Well, I have completely shredded all the office furniture….(used to be) nice leather chairs…. thankfully, my parents haven’t punished me.  And yes, they bought me a nice scratching post. But I still like the chairs.  Oh, and if anyone leaves the bathroom door open, I play in the toilet and then leave paw prints all over EVERYTHING.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Paws down, that would be my dad. And here’s why: I came to be their shop kitty in August, 2013. A few weeks later, my dad’s father became ill and passed away.  My dad still came to the shop everyday during the time, but sometimes, he wouldn’t really work. He’d sit in the office at his desk, and I could tell he really needed me. So I would climb up on his chest and lie there and just be there for him.  Our picture was even in the local newspaper (my mom sent it in).  I still lie on his chest sometimes, but I’m much bigger and heavier than I was then, so it’s not quite as comfortable for him. But he still likes for me to do it.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  When new customers come to their shop, they don’t realize that I am really the boss there.  My mom even bought a plaque for me that says: “Boss Lady”.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Beba and Barmalei

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  I am Beba. When our humans first saw us, they only wanted my brother Barmalei. But He picked me up and asked, “Who is this tiny ball of fluff that fits in my palm?” “This is Fluffy,” said the Rescue lady, – she seems to be fine now, but she was rescued two weeks later than the rest of the litter, and she was very sick. The doctor thought she would not survive. “ And He said to Her, “I am not letting this one go.”  So She said, “Fine, we’ll take both, but what kind of a name is Fluffy? She is so beautiful; let’s call her Bella – beautiful.”

(Later we found out that it was Her nickname when she was a child, given by Italian neighbors – ha! These humans – no imagination!).  He said, “But she is so small! In Odessa, every Bella is called Beba when she is little. Let’s call her Beba!” And you know what, I am a big cat now, but they still call me Beba! What happened to Bella, I want to know? Oh, and by the way, we don’t call our humans mom and dad because it would imply that we are children, and we are not! We are mature, responsible cats.

Beba, you? Mature? You are just as mature as He; both of you have ADHD, but at least he takes his meds! Mrrrr! Frrrr!  Beba – behave! Hi there, Bacon! I am Barmalei. As you have gathered, we call our humans He and She because they think they are our equals. I allow them to think so. When they met us, my name was Barak, but She thought it was disrespectful to the President, so they renamed me. Barmalei is what they call a boogeyman in Russia, and I am all black, like a real boogeyman. It does sound a little like Barak, so it was easy to get used to. Sometimes she also calls me Majestic and Super Intelligent, but I don’t think those are names.

Age:  We are 8 ½ years old. We are mature cats. Well, some of us are.  Frrrr!  Behave, girl!

Location:  We are South Beach kitties! Cats come from all over the world to have fun here, and we live here – are we lucky or what!  But we never go outside because it’s not safe.  Oh, but there is plenty to do inside, even though it’s just a little two-bedroom apartment. Swinging on curtains, tearing down drapes, scratching upholstery…

…eating Her roses …Yes, eating her roses – roses are delicious, especially the red ones! Mrrrr! And what about playing piano? I love music!  Well, I prefer helping in the kitchen or typing on the computer. We are not allowed on tables or counters, of course, but I can sit under the table and purr to inspire Her. I have a really loud purr, and She loves it! Sometimes I nudge Her elbow with my paw when She takes pictures, to give Her a better angle, of course.

You forget Friday Mornings! Mrrrr!  I never forget anything! Contrary to you and Him, I don’t have ADHD. I am superbly organized. I know that on Friday morning, I have to remind Her to serve us our favorite Chicken with Gravy dinner in a special fancy human dish on a human table, to honor Shabbos. Maybe She will remember, but She is always so busy before Shabbos, so I remind Her – in my full voice.

Web/Blog Page:  Oh, we don’t have one. We are not writing cats, we are South Beach beauties!  Manicure, pedicure, grooming, greeting guests – who has time for writing?   Talk about yourself, Beba. I am not a writing cat, but I am a reading cat and even a praying cat. When He prays at home, I inspire Him by turning pages in His prayer book. Anyway, we let Her engage in silly human pastimes like blogging. If you are interested, Her blog is https://koolkosherkitchen.wordpress.com/ , and she writes all kinds of funky stuff about food and cooking, and stories related to food and cooking. Other humans seem to like it, I guess, since she keeps  getting those “awards” which are things you can’t see, eat, or smell. I just wonder… Anyway, we support Her by providing inspiration and entertainment.  And beauty too! Mrrrr!

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?   Thoughts? We were little babies! In our foster mom’s home there were other little rescued kittens, a whole bunch of them, so she was nice, but we weren’t getting a lot of attention. All of a sudden, here is this big man with gentle hands who calls me beautiful and the little lady who speaks cat language! She doesn’t really speak cat language, but we understand Her, and She understands us. We can hold an intelligent conversation. Some of us, that is. I do think that She is a kind of a cat, even though She looks like a human. She and I look alike, everybody says that.

Mrrr! Me and Him look alike too! She says I have His green eyes.  And his ADHD, too.  Frrrrr! Slap! People with ADHD are smarter than everybody else! They have higher IQ, whatever that is – She says so!  That’s people, silly, not cats. You, for example, don’t even know proper grammar. Embarrassing, that.  Ah, whatever… Time to brush my tail…

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  Let me say it! Let me say! They had our toys and they gave us new toys, too! I had a blast! There was no other kitten to grab my toys, and my brother is good that way; he never takes my toys away from me.   Well, I personally have never been much interested in toys. I do sometimes pick up that purple fluffy thing… A bird, brother, that’s a bird! … that was a bird before my sister tore it apart, and place it on Her couch as a little token of my love. You see, with me it was love from the first sight! With Her too, I know that! She asked me to kiss Her on the nose right away, and I did. I love settling myself on Her tummy when she is working, or reading, or watching that big screen that sometimes shows people singing. Oh, I love people singing! It’s called opera, and also musical, and I get off Her tummy and go sit down right in front of the screen. Then He says, “Barmalei, you are not transparent, we can’t see through you!” and I go back to Her, my one and only true love, and I kiss Her nose, and groom Her eyelashes with my paw, and let Her tell me how intelligent and majestic I am, and I purr so loudly that they can’t hear the music… I think He is a little jealous; after all She is His wife. I am only Her Familiar – that’s what He says.

Frrrrr! Nobody lets me groom their eyelashes! Not fair!  Because you scratch and bite, silly, and that’s why you get your manicures and pedicures.  But I only want to play! Mrrrrr! Anyway, a girl needs her mani-pedi, and I’ve trained them to provide regular beauty treatments for me! Aha!

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   As a responsible individual, I have never done anything wrong. My sister, on the other hand…Oh you! Frrrrr! Slap! Who tells me to go taste the roses, and then I get in trouble, and you just sit there, as if you don’t know what’s happening? And who wakes me up by touching my whiskers and then runs away? Of course I have to chase you, and if I break a glass or two on the way, it isn’t my fault!

Ah, you poor innocent! Who made a hole underneath the mattress and hid inside for hours, until She almost had a heart attack, and He was giving her that medicine that would make us drunk if we were allowed to have it? Who goes and does her necessary in the hallway if your meowjesty’s litter box is not cleaned right this moment?  That’s it. I’ll get into my hole in the mattress and cry.   Oh, come on, Beba, you know everybody loves you! We are doing an interview, and you will be a big star, bigger than Emma Stone!

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Him!  Him, for sure.  He does not chase me off the dining room table where the roses are. And He lets my brother get on the table, too, and turn the pages for Him. He climbs up and hangs the drapery back every time I swing and tear it down.

You have to remind Him to refill our food and water bowls, and He doesn’t understand us, but She does, and She makes sure to translate for Him. She is strict. When She catches me on the table, all She has to do is to say my name, and I am off, pronto!

But we eat treats out of her hand every morning!  Yeah, but She wouldn’t give them to us at any other time, even when we are very good! Mrrrr!  Beba, I am always good.  Frrrr! Mrrrr! Slap!

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  Oh, this one is funny! When they see my brother for the first time, some of them get scared. And he is the gentlest, sweetest, most sociable cat around, and he loves to greet guests, but he is black, and some humans think it’s scary, and then they call me silly – imagine!

Unfortunately, this is true. It takes time for them to get used to me, but some of them still don’t want to play with me – pity! They want to play with my sister, a gorgeous fluffy fur ball, but they don’t realize that she scratches and bites. Granted, she thinks she is playing, but humans get hurt. Now, I never scratch or bite, but they don’t trust me. Oh well, I am too proud to complain. I am Majestic, I take good care of my sister, and I have my only true love. Life is beautiful.

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Kona

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  I had been pulled out of a high-kill shelter in San Diego by Second Chance Dog Rescue and was living with my foster parents. My adopting mom walked in the door to meet me, and I walked up to her, stood on my hind legs, and put my paws on her chest. When she sat down, I walked over to her and put my head in her lap. The foster mom told my mom that I had never approached anyone like that before, and that this dog had made his choice. I knew this was going to be my mommy, and I let her know it!

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  A few days after I came to my new home, mom and I were at the dog park. I was playing with a group of dogs, running around and having fun, when I stopped and looked around for my mom. I couldn’t find her, and got scared. She was watching me, and when we made eye contact, I smiled and ran towards her, just like in those love story movies 🙂 She and I both bonded at that moment – we both remember it clearly.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   I had never had an accident in the house, and was proud of it. One day, while mom was at work, I had a bad tummy ache and couldn’t hold it. I felt soooo bad when mom got home and saw my boo boo, my head was down and she just gave me a hug and cleaned it up. She knew I didn’t mean to do it.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why?  I think I have my mommy wrapped more. She and I are so closely bonded, and when I give her my sad look, her heart hurts. On the other side of that, I come and sit close to her when she’s hurting, too.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  My daddy sometimes thinks that I automatically understand human behavior. In other words, he gets mad at me cuz I don’t automatically know how to do things, or I don’t understand why I’m being punished. Mom has to remind him that I’m a dog, and dogs need to be trained, and it takes time. He’s getting better, though. Mom says I’m teaching him patience 🙂

31 Days of Spook – The Curse of the Sorry Rocks

Welcome my friends to 31 Days of Spook.  Today’s Curse of the Sorry Rocks is submitted by my Auntie Sharon from Gentlestitches.  Are you ready to be spooked – remember as always, my hoof is there for you.  Happy shivering.

The area around Uluru in outback Australia had an unusual rainfall before we arrived last week. This resulted in a desert land with scatterings of plant life to be transformed into a carpet of wildflowers. Did I take some cuttings home to add to my own carefully crafted Australian wildflower garden?

I DID NOT!

Let my explain briefly………………

The area of and around Uluru is considered sacred. The Anangu people are the legal custodians. Visitors are welcomed but expected to act in a respectful way.

Visitors are allowed to take photographs and that is all. It is a 5000 dollar fine if caught with any sands or rocks but even so that alone doesn’t always deter people.  What does deter people is

THE CURSE OF THE SORRY ROCKS.

Every year, rocks, sand and vegetation, often very small, are returned to the Katatjuka National Park head quarters with letters of apology. It seem either the people’s guilt or the curse, led to misfortune and misery of some kind and they want to atone.

So we took photos and made friends with camels. All of whom were “rescue camels” and very well looked after.  (my camels name was Lasseter because he was found wandering around the Lasseter highway)  When you are a visitor you should respect your host, particularly if there is a well documented curse if you don’t.

Remember Me Thursday and Light a Candle

Today September 22nd is Remember Me Thursday.

This is a very important date to remember all of the lost animals that didn’t find their forever homes.  Each year, animals are euthanized because they are unwanted.

Today, let’s light a candle and keep it going to remember them.  It takes all of us to do our part in making sure animals get as much love as they need and find their forever parents.  Did you adopt your current anipal into their forever home or did they adopt YOU?  Maybe today, lean a paw at your local shelter and/or make a donation to help.

Hold your babies tight today and say a little prayer my friends.  Continue the light and be their voice!  It takes all of us doing our part.  Thanks my friends!

You’ve Been Kidnapped – Who Will Rescue You?

I recently saw this question posted on Facebook and could not resist sharing it here with you my friends.  You are kidnapped and the characters from the last television show are mounting a rescue.  Who are they?

Me – snorts – that would be the folks from Gilligan’s Island – you know the Skipper, Gilligan, the Professor, Mr and Mrs. Howell, Ginger and Mary Ann.  What does that mean.  It means I’m never getting rescued – snorts with piggy laughter.

Mom/Dad – This is hilarious.  Mom/dad watch this show at night when they go to bed called Mountain Monsters. They love that show!  You’ve got the guys – Trapper, Jeff, Willy, Wild Bill, Buck and Huckleberry.  They are from the West Virginia area and track down mysterious sightings of weird creatures and of course Bigfoot.  Their team is called AIMS (Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings).  This is going on their 3rd season.  If anything, mom/dad’s rescue would be a hoot full of excitement and adventure. Below I found a picture off the internet on the Destination America website.  Look at these guys – don’t you want to be rescued by them too?

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Bella

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to our edition of SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this new series!

IMG_4507-1

Name:  Bella

Age:  5

Location:  Stockbridge, Georgia

Web/Blog Page:  N/A – I can’t risk anything taking away from my play time  (Bella will be checking in for messages.  Please my friends – let’s welcome Bella to the world of Blogville.)

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  Mom was the first one I met and I knew right away that she was going to cater to my every whim.  She seemed so happy to meet me.  Lots of smiling and even a little teary.  I had her rubbing my belly and playing ball with me within the first few minutes.  After just a short visit with me at my foster mom’s, she was completely hooked.  She put me in the car seat and we were off to go shopping!  We did have to pull over before too long though.  I had dropped my ball!  And since I’m not allowed out of my car seat, what choice did she have really?  Anyway, once we got to the store, I got new accessories to wear and tons of treats and toys.  We had so much fun picking out toys.  I got final approval before anything went into the cart.  Finally, we were on our way home where I got to meet Dad.  He was excited to see me too!  They made me feel so comfortable and I knew they loved me already.  I noticed right away though that they had other children.  That definitely concerned me.  I really require a lot of attention and I wasn’t sure how this was going to work out now.  It didn’t take long before I realized that the other kids were much, much older and did a lot of sleeping.  So, I was happy again.  My new parents made it pretty clear that I would get as much attention as I wanted and that they could even pay attention to all of us.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  Oh, I think I knew that right away!  Mom talked to me all the time and just seemed so happy to have me there.  My first night, she rubbed my tummy in bed right beside her until I went to sleep.  She also let me keep lots of my toys in bed with us.  I like having them with me wherever I am.  Especially those little tennis balls!  Those are the greatest things ever!  Sometimes I even sleep with one in my mouth.  And, uh, did I mention she pulled the car over to get my ball I dropped just 10 minutes after getting on the road?  Yeah, I knew she was keeping me and I was happy about it.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?  If I’m honest here, I really don’t get into trouble.  Some may think I’m on the spoiled side, but whatever…  There was one occasion I got yelled at big time and it scared me stiff!  Mom had opened the front door, and didn’t say “stay” that time, so I ran out and straight down the driveway.  Next thing I know, she was screaming at me and running right behind me!  I just stopped right where I was and laid down.  I wasn’t sure what I did wrong, but I know Mom was really scared and mad at me.  Ever since then, if I act like I want to take off out the front door, she’s really quick to tell me to stay.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why?  So easy!  That’s definitely Mom.  She’ll stop anything she’s doing if I want sit in her lap or I want her to throw the ball.  One of my favorite things to do is roll my ball under the furniture and stare at her until she comes to get it.  I know it’s a silly thing to do, but I like checking once in a while that she’s going to come to my rescue.  Of course, she always does.  I know Mom tries to spend as much time with me as she can too.  In fact, I think she used to sew a lot before I came.  I remember shortly after I moved in, she went in her room one day to sew something.  I was kind of in the mood to play ball though, so I kept going to the door with the ball in my mouth looking as pitiful as I possibly could.  She kept telling me to wait a few minutes and we would play soon.  I tried to wait.  I really did!  But it just seemed like it was taking forever and I certainly didn’t want her to forget that I was waiting either.  So, to rush things along, I started stepping on that pedal thing she was stepping on too.  I’m not sure if I really was helping, but I do know she quit sewing and we were playing ball.  I don’t think I’ve seen her sew since then.  To be fair, I’m pretty attached to her too.  I love snuggling and giving Mom kisses and I always give her plenty of hugs when she comes home from work so she knows I missed her.  I never go to bed without her either.  I always wait for her (this makes her feel guilty when she’s has to work really late).  Anyway, it all works out.  She knows I’m happy to be with her too.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  Me personally?  That’s a tough one.  I guess it depends on the humans.  Some may think it is crazy how much importance is placed on me.  Like I have no feelings and shouldn’t matter so much.  Those are the ones who are crazy.  I make it perfectly clear when I’m happy or pouting or feeling needy or whatever.  There is no way to not know I have feelings!  Therefore, I matter a great deal.  I have likes and dislikes, I love attention, I form attachments…  Oh, I could rant about this for days.  That’s probably the misconception that bothers me most.  THEN, there are those people who look at me and come to the strange conclusion that I am too spoiled!  I really don’t know how to even respond to them.  Too spoiled?  Ridiculous.

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend Bella – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

A Favorite Snack Food

20130718-102104.jpg

It’s that time of the year again when the cherries are in full flourish. Mom buys them at the market because they are suppose to be good for arthritis. She says it works so during this time of the year, we always have some in the cold box.

Mom made the mistake of giving me one last year and now I’ve been hooked ever since. Thank goodness I don’t have to fight dad for these – he doesn’t care much for them.

Mom takes the stem and seed off for me and gives me the actual cherry. I could snarf down eat the entire bag if she could get the seeds out quick enough.

A little funny about cherries though. Don’t eat too many of them.

One time I ate so many of them that when I went wee wee, it was red. I thought dad was going to have to call rescue until mom remembered the cherries I ate. That was a close call. Snorts
