Simpler Times

27 Jul

While Bacon is a camp this week, I want to focus on a few things that as adults we have forgotten about when we were children. LOL – this only makes sense since my little guy is away at Camp.  He grunted like he didn’t want to go but I think he secretly loved getting away and traveling like his pet rock.

It seems like when we were younger, that was the more simpler times in our lives.  As children we didn’t have bills or a lot of toys but it seemed like we had the world at our feet.  We went outside and played.  I mean ran around and played ball, climbed trees and searched for bugs and watched the moonlight. We played hopscotch and hide and go seek.  We socialized with other kids, screamed outside and had a blast.  As long as we were in ears reach of our parents when they called, we were rich with our nature.  Do you remember staying out late and catching lightening bugs? Or do you remember chasing frogs?

And oh should we discuss riding in the family car with our parents on long trips.  We didn’t use seat belts and look – we all survived which was amazing.  I remember going on vacation and we would leave at night and drive to our destination.  Us kids would be sacked out in the back of the car.  One of us would lay across the floorboards, one of us would get the seat to stretch out and one of us would sleep in the back window  The horror of not wearing seat belts!  Now *those* were the days.  And what about going to the lake.  You would throw a bunch of blankets in the back of the pick up truck so that you had a place to lay down after swimming all day so you could watch the stars in the sky.

We played so hard as children that when we went to bed we would have ‘growing pains’ in our legs from running all day.  Do you remember those?  But hey it was all worth it because the next day we would be out doing it all again.

And we watched the *good* cartoons like Scooby Doo, the Jetson’s, Tom and Jerry and the Flintstones.  Cartoons that actually made sense and are still fun to watch this day. And after dinner, we watched television with the parents until bed time.  Awesome shows like Happy Days, Fantasy Island, Mork and Mindy, Chips, Wonder Woman, the Facts of Life and Alice.  Who could forget Alice?  “Kiss my grits!”

What do you remember from childhood.  What did you do that you don’t see children doing these days?

the kids in our street have all grown up together next to a creek. None of them are “screen” kids. They are all into animals ,music and reading and making things. Next week the whole lot of them are in a play at school. As an observer I think having friends one’s own age is a big key to joy. ❤

YES! Having fun and just being a kid is the best thing in life. So many times kids are robbed of their childhood due to circumstances. Let them be kids for as long as they can and have joy.

I remember that we played tennis on the streets (with that boring yellow softballs)… imagine that today… or we had a rollerskate race on the mainstreet, I can’t remember that we had to break it up for a car….. and I remember that we counted the car drivers who dug for gold in their noses when we were on the way to a howl-i-day… that was much more fun than to count just yellow or red cars :o)

Oh my yes!! Gold diggers be afraid! We often played baseball in the streets along with football. So much fun! And dad had a huge garden in the backyard. At the end of every season when the gardening was over, we used to have a neighborhood tomato fight. Hilarious clean – okay maybe dirty – fun.

of course! Nowadays, it’s couch potato Netflix nights instead of hunting for lightening bugs.

When I was a kid we played outside – all the time – made up games or hide and seek or tag…..I had to explain to a couple of 8 year olds how to play hide and seek the other day – made me sad.

Oh the joys in that! Kids don’t know the joys of hide and seek or swimming in the creek.

No one wants to play outside anymore! So many scary things like temperatures over 70, lightning bugs, pollen, dangerous playground equipment, other kids… the list goes on. I think video games advertise they will not function if you don’t play daily 😢

I think you may be right in that – if not played daily, your sills will diminish. It all falls into a trap.

I used to “drive” a spoon around an area rug. It later became an airplane. I would make a piece of wood become anything I wanted it to be. I had as many toys as my imagination allowed. Now I see expensive cars that can be nothing else. An airplane that can be nothing else. Pieces of wood and other redundant items in landfill sites. I was so lucky to be a child in a time when “making do with you have” was the rule. Whereas those days have long gone, I still have my imagination which I am sure was nurtured by my childhood circumstances. 🙂

That’s it exactly! Our imaginations had no limitations when we were younger. In fact, sometimes the best thing I can do these days is just sit on the outside on the deck. I let the sun touch my body and my mind just go where it wants with imagination. It’s awesome!

I was just talking about this last week. In our neighborhood, summer time was when you left the house on your bike in the morning, came home for chores or supper, then went back out until dark. My mother loved it. “Go outside.” I might as well have stepped through a blackhole, for all she knew.

Exactly! I remember those days of climbing trees and playing. All you had to do was make sure you were within yelling sound of your mother.

I remember those times. My dad had a station wagon and I loved to ride in the back. Have a great week.

YES! We did too. You sat in the back and got to watch the action behind you. It was awesome! We all got to fight for the privileged seat.

Playing outside until after dark – and in Alaska, during the summertime, ‘dark’ was 11:30 p.m.! Can’t forget those long road-trips, either: two adults, three kids, and a big dog all piled into a Volkswagen Beetle…very crowded!

Ah those were the days June!!!!
My childhood was spent in Owen Sound (where I am now). Every day out to play in the woods; go splashing in the waterfalls. Taken to the Park almost daily! Sauble Beach every Sunday! Walking in the woods bird & critter watching with my Father every weekend.
Going to county fairs & horseshows & for ice cream….
    Life was FAB!

Sadly these days kids are constantly being entertained and shuttled around which tends to result in them being way too over-stimulated. Kids don’t know how to deal with time on their hands without benefit of stuff. And they definitely don’t seem to spend any alone time figuring out crickets, frogs, bugs, and other outdoor things. 😉

No they don’t. And I thought of another one last night. How many times did we drink from the hose in the yard? Oh my gosh – kids these days don’t know the life, huh?

In the summer, my mom would let us outside & tell us not to come back until mealtime! And we did!!!

Exactly! Wasn’t that the best of days. The heat, the drinking from the water hose, climbing trees and exploring – all as long as you were within yelling sound of mom.
