National Sandwich Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

.

Friends – this is an awesome day – National Sandwich Day!  Sandwiches are so varied in how you can make them – what bread, what meats, hot or cold, grilled, pressed, open or closed, condiments, toppings – sigh – let me slow down.  The options are out there my friends.  Do you know how the day got started?

English history says that John Montagu was the 4th Earl of Sandwich.  He was a heavy gambler and would spend hours at the tables in London’s gambling halls.  In 1762, he created the sandwich by putting meat between two pieces of bread.  This allowed him to stay at the tables longer to gamble.  Thus, the sandwich was made.

And do you know what Elvis Presley liked on his sandwiches?  Peanut butter, banana and bacon (sorry Bacon) and then it was grilled.  It does sound interesting in a round about way.

And do you have a Subway restaurant in your area?  Today if you buy a sub and a 30 ounce drink, you get a free sub to share.  Now that sounds like an awesome way to spend today.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

.

Ahoy, mateys!  Today, September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day!!  It’s a day for fun – you know a day to let our inner pirate come out just for fun.  Practice your pirate talk and talk like a pirate all day long to everyone.  See how much fun you can have telling people to ‘walk the plank’… chitter chatter – so funny!  Just remember, it’s not required that you dress like a pirate as long as you talk like a pirate.

20130601-002004.jpgFor your convenience, I’m adding a few words that might come in handy this day.  Be sure to fit them into your conversations somewhere and see the reaction on people’s faces.

Ahoy! – “Hello!”

Avast! “Whoa! Get a load of that!”

Aye! – “Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did.”

Aye aye! – “I’ll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over.”

Arrr! – “Yes,” “I agree”; “I’m happy”; “That was a clever remark you or I just made.” Note:  not to be confused with Arrgghh

Beauty – The best possible pirate address for a woman. Always preceded by “me,” as in,“C’mere, me beauty.”.

Bilge rat – The bilge is the lowest level of the ship. It’s loaded with ballast and slimy, reeking water. A bilge rat, then, is a rat that lives in the worst place on the ship. A lot of guy humor involves insulting your buddies to prove your friendship. It’s important that everyone understand you are smarter, more powerful and much luckier with the wenches than they are. Since bilge rat is a pretty dirty thing to call someone, by all means use it on your friends.

Bung hole – The stopper in the barrel is called the bung, and the hole is called the bung hole. That’s all. It sounds a lot worse, doesn’t it?

Grog – An alcoholic drink, usually rum diluted with water. Call your beer grog if you want.

Hornpipe – Both a single-reeded musical instrument sailors often had aboard ship, and a spirited dance that sailors do.

And of course, Bacon’s dad is bouncing right along with today.  He’s already confronted Bacon’s mom with a couple of what shall we say ‘off-colored’ pirate talk this morning.  Shakes my head.  He has persuaded me in a bucket of nuts to add a few of his oh so wonderful pick up lines.  (Yes, I can be bought and influenced and I know you are going to try a few of these so there.)

And, I’m taking bets how much Bacon’s mom can take before she makes him walk the plank!

Avast, me proud beauty! Wanna know why my Roger is so Jolly?

Come on up and see me urchins.

I’ve sailed the seven seas, and you’re the sleekest schooner I’ve ever sighted.

That’s some treasure chest you’ve got there.
That’s the finest pirate booty I’ve ever laid eyes on.

Happy International Pirate Day me buckos!

National Dog Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Today, August 26th, is a great day for all of the pooches in the world.  Today is National Dog Day.  Today we shall recognize and honor all dogs, to appreciate the importance of having them in our lives.  Whether you have them as a personal pet, a working dog or you work in a place homing dogs, take this day and let them know how much they are valued.  Even if you don’t have a dog of your own, perhaps today is the day to fix that and adopt a dog for your household.

Remember, dogs as well as other pets ask for nothing but love in return of you taking care of them.  They are always there when you are having a good or a bad day.  They lean their shoulder when you have a good cry and make you laugh with all of their antics.  They keep you company and protect their home.  Be sure today and every day – give them some extra hugs and cuddles and perhaps a favorite treat or two.

National Tell a Joke Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Today, August 16th, is National Tell a Joke Day.  YAY!  Today should be filled with chuckles and laughs all around.  Participate in this laughable day and tell some jokes.  Do it in person, pass it along in a few emails or blog about it.  The more jokes you tell today, the more fun today will be.  Start the laughter and keep it flowing.

In honor of this day, Bacon has decided to tell a few jokes that he has heard.  Get ready to laugh friends.

Joke 1 –

One of my neighbors owns several cats.  On a recent visit, she introduced them to me.  “That’s Astrophe, that’s Erpillar, that’s Aract and that’s Alogue.”

“Where on earth did you get such unusual names?” I asked

“Oh, those are their last names,” she explained.  “Their first names are Cat.”

Joke 2 –

Why are sharks mostly salt water creatures?

    –  Because pepper would make them sneeze.

Joke 3 –

Why do seagulls fly over the sea?

    –  Because if they flew over the bay they’d be bagels.

Joke 4 –

What do you get when you cross a flower and a dog?

    – A Collieflower (cauliflower) – snorts

Book Lovers Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Hello dear friends.  Today is the official Book Lovers Day.  Don’t you just love a great book.  Something that takes you away from the every day ordinary life that you have.  Something romantic – something exciting – something spy or a great mystery.  Anything that you can read to put you in another life or another space in time.  Reading can be for fun, educational, relaxing or research.  Reading can make us laugh, smile or even cry.

Today, I encourage you to find that interesting book – of any topic that intrigues you.  Open the book and start your journey anywhere – in the house, on your bed, in the grass, on a hammock.  Go away, even for a couple of hours, to a place that you don’t need a passport to travel.

I myself will be researching some recipes.  There are a couple of chickens and roosters that don’t know what time it is in our hood.  I’m researching ways to help them – even chitter chatter.  No really, just researching some interesting recipes.  Now my friends, go find your book!

Wiggle Your Toes Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Friends – What a glorious day this is – Wiggle Your Toes Day!  Think about it – whether you have paws, toes, hooves or whatever, sometimes it just feels good to spread those toes and wiggle them.  Let those piggies loose (no offense Bacon).

Humans push their toes in shows or socks all day long.  They are always in a rush and sometimes forget to slow down.  Today, slow down!  Take those toes out of their confinements, wiggle them and let them breathe for a while.

Toes, hooves or paws come in all different sizes and shapes.  Have you wiggled your toes yet today?
