National Tell a Joke Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

.

Today, August 16th, is National Tell a Joke Day.  YAY!  Today should be filled with chuckles and laughs all around.  Participate in this laughable day and tell some jokes.  Do it in person, pass it along in a few emails or blog about it.  The more jokes you tell today, the more fun today will be.  Start the laughter and keep it flowing.

In honor of this day, Bacon has decided to tell a few jokes that he has heard.  Get ready to laugh friends.

Joke 1 –

One of my neighbors owns several cats.  On a recent visit, she introduced them to me.  “That’s Astrophe, that’s Erpillar, that’s Aract and that’s Alogue.”

“Where on earth did you get such unusual names?” I asked

“Oh, those are their last names,” she explained.  “Their first names are Cat.”

Joke 2 –

Why are sharks mostly salt water creatures?

    –  Because pepper would make them sneeze.

Joke 3 –

Why do seagulls fly over the sea?

    –  Because if they flew over the bay they’d be bagels.

Joke 4 –

What do you get when you cross a flower and a dog?

    – A Collieflower (cauliflower) – snorts

Book Lovers Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Hello dear friends.  Today is the official Book Lovers Day.  Don’t you just love a great book.  Something that takes you away from the every day ordinary life that you have.  Something romantic – something exciting – something spy or a great mystery.  Anything that you can read to put you in another life or another space in time.  Reading can be for fun, educational, relaxing or research.  Reading can make us laugh, smile or even cry.

Today, I encourage you to find that interesting book – of any topic that intrigues you.  Open the book and start your journey anywhere – in the house, on your bed, in the grass, on a hammock.  Go away, even for a couple of hours, to a place that you don’t need a passport to travel.

I myself will be researching some recipes.  There are a couple of chickens and roosters that don’t know what time it is in our hood.  I’m researching ways to help them – even chitter chatter.  No really, just researching some interesting recipes.  Now my friends, go find your book!

Wiggle Your Toes..or Paws…or Hooves Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Now friends – this is a holiday that we can ALL be involved in and celebrate.  Today is Wiggle Your Toes Day.  But let us not forget the ones that have paws or hooves.  So we shall change it just a bit to include ALL.

For humans, they cramp their toes into sneakers or Lord forbid heels all day.  Can you imagine that my fellow anipals?  Thankfully, us anipals are smarter than the average human.  We let our paws and hooves be free to wiggle everywhere all day long.  In the grass, in the water, in the sand – it doesn’t matter where.

And did you know that all toes are different in come in different sizes and shapes.  Some humans have less toes and some have more.  Some of us anipals even have webbed paws or toes.  All of us different.  But one thing is sure – We are *all* unique.

Friendship Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Who could ask for a better day?  The first Sunday of August is always Friendship Day.  Isn’t that a wonderful day to celebrate?  What is better than friends – whether they come in the human form or the animal form.  Friends are always there with us in good times and in bad times, to share special moments in our lives.  Sometimes all it takes is just a smile, holding a hand, a hug or just an ear or shoulder to cry on.

Friendship Day should be celebrated by phone, in person or by reaching out in an email or blog.  You don’t have to live next door to show someone how much you care.  Express your friendship in some way today and show the ones that you love what they mean to you.

NOTE FROM PIGLOVE –

We here at Piglove would like to tell all of our friends here how much we love and appreciate them.  You put up with our silliness, our sometimes seriousness (although it doesn’t happen often) and our whack-o ways.  We started Piglove as an outlet to share memories of Bacon… a cute little miniature pot bellied pig.  You have helped me to personally grow and do something that I love, to write and make people laugh.  I would like to take this time on Friendship Day and tell each and everyone of you – Thank You for being our friends.  We cherish our times, our talks, our emails and phone calls.  We cherish your ‘go with this’ attitude when we come up with something whacky and new.  You can never imagine how much your friendship means to us.  Here’s to another year of great posting, inter-action with our friends and much laughter –  Bacon’s humans

National Junk Food Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here – Keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –

I think this is a day that we *all* have been looking forward to all year long – National Junk Food Day.  Today, July 21st, we can eat all of the junk we want – hopefully without calories!  Today being National Junk Food Day gives us a chance to eat anything and everything we can put our greedy little hands/paws/hooves on and not feel one bit of guilt.  Potato chips, dips, Cheetos, pretzels, ice cream, nuts, french fries, milkshakes, pizza – what’s your pleasure for today?

Personally, I think today is going to be a race here at the Hotel Thompson to see who can eat more junk food – Bacon or his daddy… oh and don’t think Bacon’s mom won’t participate.  She’s been doing that four lettered bad word – diet – I’m sure she will enjoy her own as well!

National Yellow Pig Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here – Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world

Hallelujah! Can you believe they make a holiday for this little oinker we have here at the Hotel Thompson called Bacon? It’s not enough that he’s a spoiled little tyke, now he has holidays. It’s certainly a great reason to celebrate with Bacon – we’ll take that anyday.

Yellow Pig Day is today, July 17th. This is not to be confused with National Pig Day celebrated on March 1st every year. Are you wondering what the difference is between the two pig day holidays? Let me explain it to you 🙂

National Pig Day on March 1st, recognizes and appreciates domesticated pigs, like Bacon. Pot-bellied pigs are often found in petting zoos and sometimes they can be found in regular every day homes like at the Hotel Thompson as members of the family. (I would say as pets but we all know that Bacon has gone beyond that category and is now a ‘member’ of the family. Some would say a child.) I’m sure you already know due to Bacon’s blog here that pigs are highly clever and intelligent animals. They will focus in on one thing until they accomplish whatever they are trying to do. Pigs like Bacon can learn how to open doors, gates, fetch like dogs, roll over and other amazing tricks. Ellen Stanley, an art teacher in Texas, created National Pig Day in 1972. Her intent was to to recognize and be thankful for pigs as intelligent domestic animals. And I have to admit, this holiday is HUGE at the Hotel Thompson.

Yellow Pig Day on July 17th is a mathematician’s holiday celebrating yellow pigs and the number 17. Have you ever seen a yellow pig in real life? Probably not, but wouldn’t it be fun to have them yellow? Why not celebrate yellow pigs anyway! This holiday has been celebrated yearly since the early 1960’s, primarily by mathematicians on college campuses but hey it’s a holiday – let’s celebrate! I wonder if Bacon’s Aunt Tina knows about this date? Did you know that she is in fact a mathematician and a college professor? See smartness runs in the Thompson family 🙂

The Yellow Pig was created by mathematicians Michael Spivak and David C. Kelly in the early 1960’s. Spivak and Kelly were students at Princeton University, studying of course mathematics. History was made as they were listing interesting properties of the number 17. During this thought wave, the yellow pig was born. The yellow pig and the number 17 have been linked ever since.

So, spend some time today thinking and working in multiples of 17 and thinking about little yellow pigs.

National Fried Chicken Day – Oh Have Mercy!

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here – Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

July 6 is National Fried Chicken Day.  On this day, enjoy your crispy, tasty, finger licking good fried chicken.  Fried chicken has got be one of America’s favorite meals.  You know right up there with apple pie!  And you know what?  Fried chicken is good hot or cold right out of the refrigerator.

We all know that fried foods aren’t good for us but every once in a while, you just have to splurge on some great chicken. And today, I *had* to mention this national holiday because Bacon’s mom is a huge fan.  No, let me change that.  Bacon’s mom is a ginormous fan of the fried chicken.  And yes, even the little booger Bacon likes his share as well.  It’s tasty – however you get it.

And the good thing about fried chicken is that it comes in many different forms.  Almost everyone thinks that their recipe is the best recipe.  You have KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) when it was really KFC – not this newer lighter better for you version they are putting out there.  Heck, that’s another news update for another time!   You also have Church’s which is really good.  Their pieces of chicken are huge and oh so wonderful.  And, you even have a place called Bojangles that has really good fried chicken.

Then, you have Bacon’s parents favorite chicken – Popeyes.  You can get it either spicy or mild.  Mom likes it mild and dad likes it spicy.  That Bacon, he eats it either way.  Look at that picture of the chicken.  Doesn’t that fried chicken look just about next to perfect?  Can you tell that we are from the south and we adore chicken??

So, on this day – you enjoy some fried chicken from your favorite place – even if it’s your own kitchen.  I am totally sure they will be having Popeyes at the Hotel Thompson!

Independence Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel – Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Today is July 4th – the birthday of our nation. On this day, we celebrate and enjoy the freedom that comes with the event that made this day so special.  Do you know how this date originated?  Here’s a little background information for you:

Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence and led a committee that crafted the declaration between June 11-28, 1776. Jefferson and other representatives from the thirteen colonies voted and approved it on July 4, 1776. The document declared freedom for the 13 colonies from British rule. Thus, July 4th is known as Independence Day in the United States. The actual Declaration of Independence is in the Exhibition Hall of the National Archive in Washington, D.C.

And here’s a little bit of trivia knowledge to WOW some of your friends.  The Declaration of Independence didn’t actually get all of the signatures by the representatives until August 1776.  The President of the Continental Congress, John Hancock, had to sign it to make it official.  Have you ever heard of the saying, “Put your John Hancock on it?”  Now, you know where the saying originated from.

Today we enjoy this day by celebrating our freedom.  It’s a time for some good old fashioned baseball, hot dogs and family picnics.  Throw in some parades and fireworks and it becomes a holiday with a bang!

Happy Birthday, America!

National Best Friend Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here – Keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –

.June 8th. is Best Friend Day .  This is a great day to express to your friends how much you really appreciate them and cherish their friendship.  Of course, we need to do this year round but today is a special day to share your appreciation and honor your friends.

Best friends are great people.  You can spend countless hours with them doing all kinds of things and sometimes just doing nothing at all.  Whether you are talking up a storm on the telephone lines or just sitting in a room together watching a movie without talking, friends are great companions. You share everything with your best friend – from your secrets, your goals in life, your desire to endless achievements and your disappointments in life.

So today – go celebrate Best Friend Day.  Call up your bestie and spend some time, give them a small gift or hug, call an old friend you haven’t heard from in a while and if you don’t have a best friend – go find one today!

This squirrel is very fortunate to have so many friends here on this blog as well as at the Hotel Thompson.  Huge thanks to all of my friends here – Ya’ll are the best of friends!

National Hug Your Cat Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here – Keeping his paws on the nuts of the world!

Today, June 4th, is National Hug Your Cat Day.  Go ahead, give that cat a big, furry, loveable snuggable hug.  They won’t mind… well most of them won’t.

If you’re a cat lover, you know the warm feeling you get when you curl up in your favorite spot and your cat let’s you stroke them and cuddle with them.  It’s relaxing for both you and the feline.  Most cats are so independent that they will only allow a brief time of bonding before they saunter away.  If your furry friend allows you to hold them to your hearts content, you are truly lucky.

So, remember to give your furball extra hugs today and enjoy their company.  I think I overheard Bacon in the living room right now trying to give Hemi some extra hugs.  I don’t think it’s going well for him – HA.
