National Margarita Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world

February 22nd is National Margarita Day. I absolutely have to report about this day – it’s a must!

It doesn’t matter what kind of Margarita you partake in. Bacons mom likes a Habanero Margarita.  She says it’s cool and refreshing and then has a slight heat when swallowing. Yep that sounds like Bacons mom. Sweet and hot. Chitter Chatter. Don’t tell the oinker I said that.

Enjoy a Margarita today my friends!

Get a Different Name Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

“Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!”

February 13th is Get a Different Name Day – This day is created for those who are not fond of the name given to them at birth.  It wasn’t our choosing.  Rather, our parents bestowed it upon us.  If you like your given name, fabulous!  If NOT, then today is the day to take advantage of it and change your name for the day.

What will your new name be?  I was bestowed the name of Rockford Pygmy Sciuridae.  I know, it’s a mouthful.  That’s why I go by the name of Journalist Rocky the Squirrel.

Bacon’s full name is Bacon Porkchop Thompson.  I interviewed the little pig and asked him what he would change his name to for the day.  The little chap has a sense of humor.  He had a few and here are some of them:

  • Brad Bacon Pitt (He thinks he can get Miss Piggy with this name)
  • Bacon Bond 003 1/2   (The pig watches too much James Bond)
  • Kevin Bacon (Even I rolled my eyes on this one)
  • Hamm (He said he wanted to try another breakfast meat – that pig!)

What would your name be for today?  I would love to know.

National Thank a Mailman Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –

Friends, yesterday February 4th was National Thank a Mailman Day.  But the mailman doesn’t run on Sundays.  So we need to make sure we acknowledge them today.  Do you hear that pups? That means don’t chase the mailman on this date! Instead of chasing the mailman, today gives you a chance to say thank you. They deliver the mail six days a week regardless of the weather either by postal truck and walking routes. Do you remember the old Pony Express motto? “Neither rain, nor snow, nor death of the night, can keep us from our duty!” This motto is believed to be taken in part from a motto dating back to ancient times! You also hear it this way some times, “Through rain or snow, or sleet or hail, we’ll carry the mail. We will not fail.”

So pets near and far away, go sit by the mailbox today. Maybe bring a bone and give it to the mailman. Tell him thank you.

National Groundhog Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –

February 2nd is National Groundhog Day. Yes, even the groundhogs have a day, hard to believe I know. This is the all important day of knowing if Spring is coming or Winter is staying.
See, they trust us animals for the important things in life.

According to Groundhog Organizers (there is a group!), groundhogs are about 75-90% accurate. Animals rules!

Did you know?
Every year, the largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They have gathered since 1886 to celebrate this holiday and crowds are as as large as 40,000 humans.

And did you know that in Wiarton, Ontario they even have a statue of groundhog Wiarton Willie!

In Atlanta, Georgia (my home town), we have General Beauregard Lee. He lives in a plantation style house at the Yellow River Game Ranch.  He’s been on the computer checking things out and talking to the local weather peeps to get a heads up here 🙂 snort

Humans take this day very serious!

According to folklore, here are the options of the Groundhog:

  1. IF it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early.
  2. IF it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow thus winter will continue for six more weeks.

National Inane Answering Machine Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –

All important announcement – today is National Inane Answering Machine Day and is always on January 30th.  It is actually a copyrighted holiday?  Negative that is not a typing error, it is “Inane”.  You don’t even know what that means do you?  Go ahead and admit it, Bacon’s mother had to look it up too.  Poor kid needs to advance her vocabulary besides talking gibberish to that oinker all day.  I went ahead and copied this from the dictionary for you.  You’re welcome!

“inane”, Pronunciation: \i-ˈnān\
Function: adjective
Inflected Form(s): inan·er; inan·est
Etymology: Latin inanis
Date: 1662
1 : empty, insubstantial
2 : lacking significance, meaning, or point : silly
synonyms see insipid
— inane·ly adverb
— inane·ness \-ˈnān-nəs\ noun

With that being said and us knowing what ‘inane’ means now, let’s continue on this grand holiday of “National Inane Answering Message Day”.  First lets clarify the meaning of an “inane” answering machine messages. We all get them and they drive us crazy which for some cases is a short trip – HA!  An inane message is a senseless or meaningless message, or a prank call. Or, it could be an insane message.

So, National Inane Answering Message Day is a day to end those numerous, annoying insane answering machine messages. We all *know* that’s not going to be accomplished in one day but we can try, can’t we?  So for today, no prank calls!  Chatters and laughs.

National Corn Chip Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

keeping his paws on the nuts of the world.

Today is mandated as National Corn Chip Day! Corn chips are right up my alley if you know what I mean. Who can turn down a good chip? Can you believe that 50 years ago (way before this journalists time), few Americans even knew what corn chips were? That’s amazing to me. Today, we can’t imagine life without those tasty little morsels. They were first marketed in 1961 and have been going strong since.

So, in honor of today being National Corn Chip Day – go out and eat some chips… with salsa… with dip… plain… with a friend… yeah, I know the pig is going to get his share!
