National Fried Chicken Day – Oh Have Mercy!

06 Jul

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here – Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

July 6 is National Fried Chicken Day.  On this day, enjoy your crispy, tasty, finger licking good fried chicken.  Fried chicken has got be one of America’s favorite meals.  You know right up there with apple pie!  And you know what?  Fried chicken is good hot or cold right out of the refrigerator.

We all know that fried foods aren’t good for us but every once in a while, you just have to splurge on some great chicken. And today, I *had* to mention this national holiday because Bacon’s mom is a huge fan.  No, let me change that.  Bacon’s mom is a ginormous fan of the fried chicken.  And yes, even the little booger Bacon likes his share as well.  It’s tasty – however you get it.

And the good thing about fried chicken is that it comes in many different forms.  Almost everyone thinks that their recipe is the best recipe.  You have KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) when it was really KFC – not this newer lighter better for you version they are putting out there.  Heck, that’s another news update for another time!   You also have Church’s which is really good.  Their pieces of chicken are huge and oh so wonderful.  And, you even have a place called Bojangles that has really good fried chicken.

Then, you have Bacon’s parents favorite chicken – Popeyes.  You can get it either spicy or mild.  Mom likes it mild and dad likes it spicy.  That Bacon, he eats it either way.  Look at that picture of the chicken.  Doesn’t that fried chicken look just about next to perfect?  Can you tell that we are from the south and we adore chicken??

So, on this day – you enjoy some fried chicken from your favorite place – even if it’s your own kitchen.  I am totally sure they will be having Popeyes at the Hotel Thompson!

Our local grocery store does a wonderful fried chicken. When they are making you can’t walk in the store without buying it. The wonderful smell is enticing just like a good bakery! Now I’m hungry!

Fried chicken, best meal while you’re on the road. Growing up, my mom would get up extra early, cut up a whole chicken (remember, there were no pre-cut, select chicken pieces), fry it, pack it in the cooler, and ready to go by 5:30 am. Between 10 am and noon was lunch.

KFC – in the “old” days, they only had one offering on the menu – the 20-piece bucket, mashed potatoes, rolls and gravy. We didn’t have too much KFC because of the large bucket.

Church’s – didn’t last long here, maybe 2-3 years, it did not compete well with KFC.

Popeye’s – it’s addictive good when you want a spicy fried chicken.

O/T: Are you being scared enough on DF Fridays? Friday’s episode was one of the few times you see Steve’s patience tried a bit during the Reveal. (“Bothered? Don’t tiptoe around it …”) Kindred Spirits, a nice addition to the line-up.

We noticed that on DF – it was awesome! I’m loving this new season for sure.
And we agree about chicken travels. Mom says Grandpa used to fry up a batch before hitting the road to eat along the way. We LOVE Popeyes and Bojangles. The last time we had Churchs – gag! So we don’t go there anymore. And KFC is good if it’s not overcooked and old from sitting all afternoon – snorts with piggy laughter. We know our chicken don’t we? XOXO – Bacon

The only time we went to Church’s, the line was so long we ended up at a drive-in that served you at the car (not A&W). The small soda came in an 8-oz Dixie cup, the large was a 12-oz cup. Your fries in a basket, your hamburger wrapped in wax paper. By the time we got back to Church’s, they were out of business. 🙂
