National Fried Chicken Day – Oh Have Mercy!

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here – Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

July 6 is National Fried Chicken Day.  On this day, enjoy your crispy, tasty, finger licking good fried chicken.  Fried chicken has got be one of America’s favorite meals.  You know right up there with apple pie!  And you know what?  Fried chicken is good hot or cold right out of the refrigerator.

We all know that fried foods aren’t good for us but every once in a while, you just have to splurge on some great chicken. And today, I *had* to mention this national holiday because Bacon’s mom is a huge fan.  No, let me change that.  Bacon’s mom is a ginormous fan of the fried chicken.  And yes, even the little booger Bacon likes his share as well.  It’s tasty – however you get it.

And the good thing about fried chicken is that it comes in many different forms.  Almost everyone thinks that their recipe is the best recipe.  You have KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) when it was really KFC – not this newer lighter better for you version they are putting out there.  Heck, that’s another news update for another time!   You also have Church’s which is really good.  Their pieces of chicken are huge and oh so wonderful.  And, you even have a place called Bojangles that has really good fried chicken.

Then, you have Bacon’s parents favorite chicken – Popeyes.  You can get it either spicy or mild.  Mom likes it mild and dad likes it spicy.  That Bacon, he eats it either way.  Look at that picture of the chicken.  Doesn’t that fried chicken look just about next to perfect?  Can you tell that we are from the south and we adore chicken??

So, on this day – you enjoy some fried chicken from your favorite place – even if it’s your own kitchen.  I am totally sure they will be having Popeyes at the Hotel Thompson!

Rocky’s Nut Brunch

Welcome my friends to another week of Rocky’s Nut Brunch.  Today I want to share something with you that I found and was in awe about.  In fact, I immediately had to call Bacon’s dad and tell him.  This was huge news.  Do you know who Lee Jun-fan is?  Maybe you know him better from his stage name – Bruce Lee.  Bells go off now?  He was a Hong Kong and American actor famous for his martial art skills.  He was even the founder of his own studio in the martial art Jeet Kune Do.  The man had skills upon skills with his moves.  He is also known for his quotes.  One of them being:

Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless and add what is specifically your own

That makes you think doesn’t it?  But I’m done yet blowing your mind on Bruce Lee.  Let’s talk about Bruce Lee way back when he was a teenager.  In 1958, what championship do you think he won?  Go ahead and guess.  I bet you never would guess the answer.  We were all shocked here at the Hotel Thompson.  What was it?  In 1958, Bruce Lee was the Hong Kong Cha Cha championship winner.  Stunner huh?  So there you go, that blows our minds.  Did you know this?

National Cheeseburger Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Friends – friends – friends.  You won’t believe what today is.  Today is National Cheeseburger Day.  Can you believe that?!  Now I’ll tell you a secret at the Hotel Thompson.  Who lives at the Hotel Thompson and loves to eat cheeseburgers of all kinds, shapes and/or sizes?  If you guessed Bacon’s dad, YOU are so right!

I think Bacon’s dad has like an endless tummy or maybe multiple tum-tum’s like a cow.  Yeah, that could be it!  Of course, he has gotten better in his age… something about not being able to eat like he once did.  But he still loves a good juicy burger.

Did you know that cheeseburgers can be dated back to the 1920’s?  In 1928, a cheeseburger officially made it to the menu of O’Dell’s which is a restaurant in Los Angeles, California.  It was on the menu listed as a cheeseburger smothered with chili.  Can you guess in 1928 how much the burger cost?  Would you believe 25 cents!?  Nowadays, look at the prices of a good juicy burger.  It will surely set you back a good $10.00!  In the 1930’s, the founder of Steak n’ Shake Gus Belt actually applied for a trademark on the word cheeseburger.

Do you know what the top 4 cheeses for a cheeseburger are?  1) American Cheese  2) Cheddar Cheese  3) Swiss Cheese and finally 4) Pepper Jack

I guess they didn’t ask us here in the south how we like our burgers topped with cheese.  Of course, we would say with Pimento Cheese and Bacon!

Memorial Day

20130507-222103.jpg

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. On this day, which occurs every year on the last Monday of May, we remember the men and women who have died while serving our country.

Many people on this day will visit cemeteries and memorials placing an American flag at graves to honor our fallen heros.

Let’s remember that appreciation is not only one day out of the year – it’s year round.

Thank you to all of those who have died while serving our great country! I think this picture says it all.
