Canned Bread Anyone?

10 Sep

A while back Nana gave mommy a can of this B&M Brown Bread with raisins.  It’s something that Nana’s mom used to fix when she prepared beanie weenies.  Mom and dad had never had it.  It sat in the pantry cabinet whispering to mom to try it every night when she prepared dinner.  It was like a stalker, “Try me tonight.”  “I’m good”.  “Really I am”.

Finally this past weekend, mom got the nerve.  She had dinner in the oven (of course beanie weenies) and it needed a bread of some sort to go with it.  She opened the pantry cabinet and this can of bread literally jumped out into mom’s arms in a final fleet of escape.  Mom thought what the heck.

She put her iron skillet on the stove and started melting some butter.  Then she looked at the can, kind of scared at first on how to go about opening it.  She opened one end of the can and knocked it several times on the cutting board hoping the bread would fall through.  It didn’t.  Okay.  You wanna fight can?  She then opened the other end of the can and pushed the bread through.  Can – zero and mom – one.

The bread.  Well let’s just say that it looked unappealing.  With a thud it dropped out onto the counter looking miserable.

That’s when the butter that was melting came into play in the iron skillet.  Mom cut the lump of bread into slices, coated them with the butter in the skillet and warmed them up.  She had doubts.  Trust me – we ALL had doubts about this so called bread in a can.  While it was warming, mom finished up her beanie weenies.  She then plated the bread and sat it on the table.

Mom and dad sat down and stared at their plates for a while.  Mom was like, “You try it first.”  And dad was like, “No, you try it first.”  Humans – they are so weird.  Then they both looked at me and said, “Let’s get Bacon to try it.  He likes everything.”  Why does that sound faintly familiar?  Snorts

I tried it.  I liked it.  But was I really the one to test this out?  I think not.  So dad got brave.  He picked up a piece and bit it.  Mom waited for a few minutes to see if he got sick or repulsed.  And guess what.  He didn’t.  He liked it.  He really liked it.  So mom tried some.  And guess what?  She liked it too.  It really wasn’t bad.  It’s a little dense but it went great with the beanie weenies.  Would they try it again.  Yep… and so would I.

Have you ever tried this kind of bread in a can?  I highly recommend you at least trying it once. You know broaden your food horizons like my mom and dad.  They were scared at first but welcomed the challenge.  You?

Bread…in a can. We asked mom, she says we don’t get it here butt that it reminded her a little of Boston Bread, a kind of spice and date cake that is baked round like that bread and she says is delicious with butter and a cup of tea (not coffee, this is a tea needing cake)

mmm – that sounds intriguing as well. Trust me – we *all* had our doubts here at the Hotel Thompson. But it really was good – especially with the beanie weanies. It’s great to cook and eat something knowing that our family line has eaten the same thing for years. XOXO – Bacon

Bread looked unappealing but it sure was delicious after spending sometime in a hot pan with butter – licks piggy lips. Beanie weanies are baked beans with sliced up hot dogs in them. They cook together for a long time. Yummy! XOXO – Bacon

OMP (oh my pig!) You gotta try them both my friend. Baked beans with sliced hot dogs – that’s beanie weanies. A lot of times people cook them when they go outdoor camping. We liked them either in the stove for cooking or in the crockpot cooking all day. They are pretty tasty! XOXO – Bacon

That all DID sound “fairly familiar” and I agree you are not the most discerning taster. Neither am I. I eat goose poop on a regular basis (when mom isn’t looking), and once I ate a butterfly. Mom is thumbs up on beanie weenies and thumbs down on canned bread. #itsoundsyummytome

Oh my Mom remembers that bread – her Mom would often serve it with all kinds of things but beanie weenies definitely! Mom loved it – I’ve never had it but I’d be willing to try it if it tasted like my raspberry yogurt (hahahahaha).

    Hugs, Sammy

aaww – awesome huh? I love it when food gets passed down so to speak and new generations try it. My nana’s mother used to cook it a lot growing up with Nana. Then nana did and now nana gave it to my mom. Cool huh? XOXO – Bacon

my grampy brought boxes of canned bread as the army decomissioned that stuff. he said we will save a lot of wonga and its “supertasty”… and he was the one who skipped breakfest as long as we had this stuff (bet its made from sweeping powder). butt I’ve heard that scientists found a can of bread from WWII and after they opened the can it was still as good (or as bad) as it should be… better we keep the canned bread for later… maybe for the next 70 years :o)

Snorts brother – that is hilarious! By the looks of the bread that fell like a brick out of the can, I can see it hibernating for years in that can. Once a swim in some butter in the “hot tub” we call a skillet, it wasn’t all that bad… or maybe it was because mom/dad were hungry? Snorts. XOXO – Bacon

maybe they added cement or clay to the bred doug and you really can use it when you have a hole in the wall?

Snorts! It’s hard to find in the grocery stores. Nana went on a hunt and find mission and finally had to ask the store manager where they kept it. Apparently it’s a long standing item that sells. Who would have thought that huh? XOXO – Bacon

This is true my little buddy. And it really wasn’t that bad. Mom even said that after a swim in butter in the hot skillet, a little cream cheese on it and it would have been close to heaven. Who knew?! XOXO – Bacon

OK….. our MOM says that there are two kinds of this One WITH raisins and One without… When she was a Little girl… 87 years ago… her family ALWAYS had this stuffs for part of their Christmas and Easter Breakfasts… and they all LOVED it… it was a TREAT. BUTT she says that her mom sliced it VERY thin and just spread butter on it… NOT Warm. It has a very strong molasses flavor.
She said she didn’t even know that it was still being made.

<> Yep, she is right. There is one with and without raisins. AND it is still being made – apparently it’s a hot commodity here in the south. High hoof/paws to ya’ll. That’s awesome that ya’ll have tried it as well. XOXO – Bacon

Mmmm…mom love beanie weenies…..she calls them beans and wieners but likes beanie weenies better…..just sounds better. She says she has never seen bread in a can but she’s never looked either. Dad says he doesn’t care for baked beans but would eat them if there was no choice. We use beans out of the can amd don’t cook them for that long….your mom must make them from scratch if she cooks them for a long time.

    Enjoyed this wee chat….different.

Snorticles. Beanie weenies just rolls off the tongue doesn’t it? Great name for some great food. Dad is not a huge fan but when mom makes them from scratch (you were right), he loves them. This bread is a nice ‘side kick’ to it. I’ll have to ask nana again where she found them in the store. It was a place that you would *never* think to look. XOXO – Bacon
