Every once in a while, your body just craves a good steak – well so says mom/dad. And when mom craves steak, dad takes full advantage and takes her to a local steakhouse that they both love. On this date, mom/dad shared this plate above, of course with a side salad. This is one of mom’s favorites – a ribeye steak fire grilled on an open flame, medium please. The juices were still running and mom licked her lips before jumping in with both feet to eat her way out. And of course by splitting the meal with daddy, that does mean 1/2 the calories. Dad said it was an awesome dinner. When was the last time you had steak calling your name?

Hello sweet friends. Did you have a lot of fun with Shopping Around the World last month? We just have a blast seeing everyone’s recipes and pictures. Since this is the summer and it is so hot here, why don’t we focus this month on foods that you prepare in this type of heat. Whether it’s a simple salad, a sandwich with chips, a watermelon salad – what do you fix for dinner when it’s just so hot outside to be cooking anything in the kitchen.

Anyone for some nachos? Welcome my friends to another posting of Travels in the South. Today we went a little Mexican. Okay maybe I should say mom/dad went a BIG time Mexican. They decided one night to go out and split some Fajita Nachos and maybe – and I stretch maybe – a Margarita might have been involved – snorts with piggy laughter. And I say share because look at that plate!
It had peppers, onions, chicken, steak, shrimp and cheese slathered all over it. It was messy and so delicious! And hey splitting it between mom/dad meant half of the calories, right? Don’t you love the way those two parents of mine have changed their way in thinking about food? You don’t have to give up the things you love, just split them in half with someone else you love ❤
Hello friends – welcome back to mom/dad’s Travels in the South. Today is a good one…. snorts – I say that every week don’t I? Rolls with piggy laughter. Well as you know mom/dad have been changing their way of eating. It’s definitely a work in progress for sure. Well, a couple of weeks ago mom took dad out for his birthday. Dad wanted to go to a local steakhouse for dinner.
Dad went for a steak of course ❤ He ordered a prime rib and mom said since it was his birthday he could have french fries. Nice of her huh? Snorts! Mom went with the strawberry fields salad. Doesn’t that look awesome? It has everything in it from nuts to grapes to strawberries to oranges. Yummy huh?
Shopping Around the World
This month it is scheduled for December 30th – after the holiday so we can all make plans. Since it is the Christmas holidays, this month we will again focus on appetizers, side dishes, salads, soups, main entrees or desserts.
This month we wanted to highlight a wonderful soup that mom/dad like to eat during the winter time. This soup is also a great jump start for their diet… but that’s another story. Here is what you will need:
♦ Steak Picanha – already sliced into bite sized strips – one package around $5.00 (note any kind of steak will work for this recipe. In fact, you can even switch the steak for chicken cut into bite sized strips.)
♦ One head of cabbage – $1.48 head
♦ One can of white/yellow corn – $0.48 can
♦ One can of diced tomatoes with green chilis – $0.48 can
♦ One package of beef broth or chicken brother – $1.50
♦ Two cups of water, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes
Cut up the entire head of cabbage and throw in the bottom of the crock pot. Add your cans of corn, chilis, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes to taste. Add in your stock and water. Add your meat to the top and put the lid on your crock pot.
Turn on your crock pot to low and let that crock pot do the work for you all day. When you get ready to eat, you will be amazed at the smell and taste. It’s hardy and wonderful. If you want it a little thicker, you can add a cut up potato with your ingredients.
Mom/dad often use this to jump start their diet. Why? Well the cabbage is an amazing item…. snorts with piggy laughter. This soup costs about $9.00 to prepare but lasts for a couple of days. It’s a little spicy but not so hot that you can’t enjoy it.
Have you been enjoying our Travels in the South my friends? Today we continue our travels with Fozziemom and Fozziedad who visited with us all the way from Australia. Now, the month previous was Fozziedad’s birthday so everyone agreed to celebrate his birthday when he came to the States.
On this date, they all ventured downtown Atlanta to hang out for a bit and then to go to lunch. Since Fozziedad plays the guitar, mom researched and found a great shop close to the restaurant they would be going to for lunch. They all went into the store where they got to hear Fozziedad play and were totally amazed and I do believe mom was star struck ❤ Fozziedad is amazing and trust us, he knows his way around a guitar. Mom/dad said if they lived in Australia they would for sure have to go and hang out when he plays.
After the guitar store visit, they went to eat at one of my mom/dad’s favorite restaurants called Fogo de Chão. This is an all you can eat type Brazilian Steakhouse. Now don’t worry. This place has everything – from the meat eaters to the vegetarians you will be happy here. You first start off with a huge salad bar that has everything that you can imagine. You can work on that salad first or have it with your meat selections. As you eat, they bring skewers of different varieties of meat to your table where they then carve it onto your plate. You choose what you want and how much. Now I have to tell you a secret. My mom/dad love this restaurant, especially these little rolls they bring to your tables in baskets. Mom says they mysterious and magically reappear in the basket every time you ask. Isn’t that amazing?
Everyone was instructed not to eat breakfast and have to empty bellies for this adventure at the restaurant. And I must admit, everyone got their fill – even dessert for the birthday boy. It was an awesome time. Sometimes when daddy puts me to bed, I ask him to tell me this story about the restaurant. I can just imagine myself laying up under the table, hooves up in the air like I just don’t care and being hand fed the remarkable steak at this place. Give me a moment….. okay let’s continue.
Afterwards, the group wanted to go on a further adventure. You see a couple of years ago, downtown Atlanta installed SkyView Atlanta. Skyview Atlanta is a Ferris Wheel that is over 20 stories above Centennial Park. They have individual gondolas that are climate controlled. Did you hear that? Climate controlled as in the day everyone visited, it was an air conditioned gondola that they rode in. Can you believe that? Ferris Wheels have come a long ways baby. When you are up in the gondola, mom said you could see all kinds of views of downtown. It was totally awesome! And of course no trip is complete without a picture of your memories.
Oh, are you asking where daddy was? He was guarding the Jeep – snorts with piggy laughter. Due to dad’s vision, he can’t go up that far so he sat this one out and partied in the Jeep until we got done. Don’t fear – he had a great time rocking out to Queen.
Do you ever wonder what Bashful does in between his globe trotting around the world? When he does land here at the Hotel Thompson, there are certain events on his calendar that he maintains. But over the weekend, mom/dad decided to take him for the Penny Game. You don’t know what that is? Check out my blog here where I posted about it over the weekend.
So they gave the penny to Bashful for the flipping. Let’s just say that was interesting all in itself. Every time he flipped the penny, he flipped himself – snorts. But he led them to an area that was full of restaurants and it was dinner time so they went to Longhorns Steakhouse. They were celebrating Bashful being home and mom needed a fill out of food.
This is Bashful talking to daddy. They were discussing what to order because it seems that little rock was starving as well. He said that he was thinking of something hearty and delicious – he missed mom’s southern cooking – awe. Daddy tried to explain to him that we all missed it too because mom hasn’t been cooking southern meals too much lately – snorts with piggy laughter.
So they talked and discussed the options of something delicious to eat. They did decide on a drink order and let me tell you, that little Bashful was thirsty. He nearly drunk this entire glass of soda in one swallow. I hope there is a bathroom near by.
Mommy had a coupon for a free appetizer. Leave it my mommy to save money wherever she can! Mom/dad chose what they call here as a Texas Tonion which are little petals of onions, battered and then deep fried. They are then drizzled with sour cream and served with a zesty sauce. The sauce is not too spicy but yet just enough to say hey there how you doing. Bashful could not get enough of these things.
Mom/dad kept telling him that he didn’t want to eat too much because he had a big dinner coming his way. He said that he could do it – he had the stomach of a rock – snorts with piggy laughter. So he ate and ate and ate.
Then one time, mom excused herself to go to the visit the facilities. As in good southern fashion, both of the guys (Bashful and daddy) stood up while she got up and left. When mom came back, she couldn’t find Bashful.
He had moved from the onion petals and was now snorting down buttered bread straight from the oven. It was still hot and so delicious that he jumped right in to the middle and was trying to eat his way out. Shaking my head – I’m telling you that my rock can put the food away for sure!
Mom/dad were able to snag one or two pieces of that bread before Bashful ate it all.
Then dinner was finally served. OMP – look at that meal! I would not be telling the truth if I didn’t tell you that I was a little bit jealous over that meal. Look at it – grilled to perfection. Mom hardly ever eats steak but her iron has been down and it was recommended that she eat one or two a month. Let me tell you, she said this steak tasted and looked so like perfection she didn’t want to mess up the picture. Of course, Bashful helped her eat it. And it was delicious! Looks at the marbling and grill marks – have you seen anything so beautiful?
Afterwards, can you believe everyone still had room for dessert? And really who wouldn’t with this dessert. The staff brought Bashful his own little sundae and mom/dad had peanut butter cheesecake – licking my piggy lips now.
A special thank you to Longhorns and our wonderful server Lauren who also got to meet Bashful! THANKS!
