Thank You My Friends

My friends – everyone here at the Hotel Thompson wants to take the time today to say thank you.  Anytime you lose a member of your household, you feel lost and out of sorts.  YOU my friends have helped us with this grieving period through your sweet comments, cards, emails and phone calls.  There are times that we still get ready for bed at night and we call for Mouse Girl without thinking… we give our treats and get enough for her without thinking… there are so many things that we have done for over the years that included Mouse Girl that it’s hard to let it go overnight.  Today, we wanted to share a few things about our Girl in hopes that everyone sees what a special gal she was and still is watching over us.

In early 2008, Hemi’s brother Tybee passed away.  We had gotten Hemi and Tybee from a shelter when they were only 3 weeks old.  We brought them to the doctor, had them tested and bottle fed them until six weeks.  Fast forward three years and Tybee got sick.  We found out that Tybee had feline leukemia and all the testing we originally done was too early for that disease to show.   When he crossed the Rainbow Bridge, not only were we devastated but so was Hemi.  He would through a mourning period as well and wouldn’t eat, at times he wouldn’t sleep and he meowed for his brother.  In speaking with the vet, they suggested we get Hemi another friend since at that time we didn’t have any other anipals in the house.

I called a local animal shelter and made arrangements to meet a Maine Coon named Belinda.  We me and Jim got the shelter, Belinda wanted absolutely.nothing.to.do.with.me.  Can you believe that?  There was just no ‘click’.  However where Jim was standing, there was another Maine Coon that was determined to get Jim’s attention.  She was meowing to him and grabbing at his arm/shoulder through the crate she was housed.

Every time Jim would walk away, she would cry louder for him to return.  I walked over to her crate and she was trying to reach out for me.  We then got to hold her.  It was like coming home – she felt like she had always been in our arms.  She purred and jumped from me to Jim.  It’s true what they say – cats pick their own staff.

But there were other signs that this particular cat was ‘the one’ to adopt.  When I went to complete the paperwork, I found out this princess’s name was Mouse Girl and that she was born the same that my dad had passed away.

Of course, we considered these all “signs” that we were doing the right thing.  And upon getting Mouse Girl home, it was like she had been there for years.  She knew exactly where the litter boxes were, where the food/water was and where we slept.  It was quite strange.

And Hemi went right up to her, purred and started bathing her.  Two cats that had never met but seemed like they had known each other for years.  What are the odds of that?

They quickly became close buds and even drank from the fountain together – because you know a ‘bowl’ of water is just too common for them – LOL.

Life went on and although other anipals came to live here at the Hotel Thompson – Bacon and Houdini – Mouse Girl who was affectionately known to us as OMG (Oh Mouse Girl) was our girl… our princess… our baby because she was the only girl for all of these years

And although she was very loving to the other anipals, it took her time to adjust to me and Jim.  Not knowing her past history of when and how she came to the shelter, we picked up real quick that she didn’t trust very easily.  But me and Jim stood fast, gave her love and let her adjust according to her schedule.

It took her almost a solid year but she finally started coming to bed with us at night and sleeping at my feet.  And then she would come up to you and touch you with her hand as if to say, “Pet me.”

She was a big girl too which Maine Coons often are.  At her prime, she was well over 20 pounds; however, she never pushed her weight around.  If Hemi, Bacon or Houdini came up to her to play, she played.  And although there were times the boys got on her nerves and she had to do was sit on them, she didn’t.  They would squabble on one paw and then all of them would cuddle up together and sleep.

So to our beautiful OMG.  We ❤ you with all of our hearts and we thank YOU for picking us as your staff.  You will never be forgotten.

Dear Bacon

20140111-195437.jpgDear Bacon – It’s so hot!  I mean really HOT.  I can’t take it anymore.  I don’t even have the stamina to look for nuts.  I can’t even move from this limb.  Can you help a squirrel out?  Signed Hot in Atlanta

Dear Hot in Atlanta – I feel for you my friend.  It is so H.O.T. here in Atlanta.  I moved from my bedroom to the living room and was almost sweating.  I need winter back.  Come on over to the Hotel Thompson.  You can crash with Journalist Rocky the Squirrel in his air conditioned treehouse in the backyard.

Dear Bacon –  There is always that *one* family member that you just roll your eyes.  This is us trying to take a serious family picture for our dad for Father’s Day.  Do you see how well that worked out?  Stupid on the end has to make faces.  What to do my friend?  Signed Classy

Dear Classy – Snorts.  You know your dad might just appreciate that look on your siblings face.  I mean if he is the family clown – him looking serious might not be a fun picture.  I say go for it my friends.  It’s better to laugh than cry!

20140111-195456.jpgDear Bacon – Rosie was having a bad day so I offered her a shoulder to cry on to get past her woes.  That was three hours and now she is asleep.  I don’t dare wake her but my shoulder – I can’t feel it anymore.  It’s past the tingling stage.  It’s now at the do-I-even-have-an-arm-there-anymore stage.  Have you ever been stuck like this?  Signed Big Brother

Dear Big Brother – You are the man my friend.  That was so thoughtful of you to have a leaning shoulder not only to cry on but to sleep on.  Of course, you can’t wake her.  After what she has been through – whatever that might be – a leaning shoulder from big brother will make all of the bad go away.  I’ve done it a time or two with Mouse Girl.  Awesome job my friend!

20140111-195508.jpgDear Bacon – There I was my fellow pig.  Eating my carrots and minding my own business.  That’s when it happened.  I heard the refrigerator door open.  You know that sound, right?  The sound of freedom. The sound that says the store is open.  Squeals!  There’s so many good things in that cold box.  Don’t you feel the same?  I couldn’t help but suck in air and squeal.  I wanna go shopping in that place!  What about you?  Signed Bandit

Dear Bandit – I feel you my fellow pig and squealer.  I love that huge cold box.  It has such mysteries of delights stored in it – from cold stuff to frozen stuff.  Once I opened the freezer and was sucking on ice cubes when mom busted me.  Why ice cubes?  Why not.  They tasted so delicious and were so cold in my piggy tummy!  Let me know if you get to go shopping in there.

FRIENDS – Please remember that Dear Bacon can’t happen without YOU.  Please email me your pictures and letters 🙂

Houdini Update

IMG_0947

Oh my friends – this *you* have to see.  Little Man Houdini in his walking stroller.  It’s okay – you can roll your eyes here.  Snorts.  Mom has been telling daddy that she wanted to set Houdini a stroller.  But all that she has seen has been outrageous in prices.  But don’t worry because we all know my mommy is the shopping Queen.  She found this stroller for $20.00!  That’s right $20.00!  WIN-WIN-WIN!  If you look closer at the stroller it zips around so the little guy can’t hop out and nothing can get to him.  It also has cup holders and a hidey hole on top for keys, mom’s phone, etc.  Awesome deal huh?

Mom and Nana took Houdini for a walk the other night.  He ❤ it!  He sits in his stroller and looks around while they are walking.  Then one night, Houdini was driving mommy nuts – which I was kind of enjoying watching.  He kept trying to nip at her, jumping on her and bugging her.  Then she said, “Okay, that’s it.  Let’s go for a walk”.  It was like that was what he wanted. He immediately went to his stroller and waited for her.

Then off they went for their little walk.  It seems to wear him out.  Not that he walks but he does get the fresh air and gets to go out with mom.  I think it’s the fresh air that helps him settle down for the night.  Mom has been trying to walk him before bedtime every night.  But you gotta admit it – he does look kind of cute in that stroller doesn’t he?

Sibling Rivalry

My sister, the girl purr thing Mouse, was trying to get me today. She usually has nothing to do with me. Today though was a different story. She tried to drink my water. Then she knocked it over soaking my lunch. I ate it anyway. I just got it a little earlier than normal. Then she came in my room and wouldn’t get out. She kept turning her back to me like she was some kind of princess or something. She’s just a girl… A girl with cooties to me. She wouldn’t even listen to mom tonight. Mom was able to take this picture of the snot.

You ever have one of those days that you just can’t get enough to eat? I think I’m going through another growth spurt. I had several snacks today plus mom gave me some shredded chicken. WOW where have you been all my life chicken? Mom says I’m definitely hers because she loves chicken too. Mom also let me try a green olive. It wasn’t bad. I ate it after I played with it a while. My top favorite food so far has to be watermelon, apples and grapes… Blueberry rice cakes are close behind. Mom always tries to keep my goodies on hand. She said she was going to get me some new things this weekend at the store. Because you know, I’m a pig and I get bored easily. You know what they say, “Variety is the spice of life.”

Well, I’m off to pig land. Have to get my sleep so I can grow strong. Oink oink out my friends.
