Travels in the South

Hello sweet friends.  Today on Travels in the South I want to share some pictures that I found recently on mom’s iPhone.  Of course it’s food pictures.  I think mom/dad take more pictures of food than Doan’s has little pills these days – snorts with piggy laughter.  So are you ready?  Here we go.

These pictures are from a delightful restaurant that mom/dad found on the River Street in Savannah, Georgia a while back.  The restaurant is called The Cotton Exchange and they have everything from hamburgers to steaks.  On this day, mom/dad were looking for appetizers to share with each other while exploring the wonderful seafood cuisine.

If you have read anything in the past about mom/dad’s food adventures, you will know that they love some good hot cheese and bread as an appetizer.  Why?  Because this is something that don’t usually eat at home.  In fact, mom usually stays far, far away from bread.  So on vacation, she likes to dive in head first and ask questions later.  At this restaurant, this lovely picture is titled but of course “Hot Bread and Cheese”.  The cheese is a garlic cheese, very hot from the stove and very tasty.  The bread left something to be desired.  Don’t get me wrong, mom/dad said it was good but look at it.  It was a side of loaf bread thrown at you.  Now some would say you could pull it apart and dip to your heart’s delight.  And that is true.  But don’t you think it would be easier to eat said bread if it was already sliced… you know especially since it’s hot?  But, I digress with mom’s finickiness.  All in all – mom/dad said it was good but could have been better.

Then when in Savannah, you *know* my mom/dad are going to get their buffalo shrimp on and ready.  Mom/dad’s second choice in an appetizer was this lovely buffalo shrimp served with celery and blue cheese.  Now, if you have never had buffalo shrimp – what are you waiting for?!  You must try this!  Even this little piggy has had buffalo shrimp from when mom fixes it here at the Hotel Thompson.  It’s like buffalo wings – same sauce – but done with fried shrimp.  How could you go wrong, right?  Mom likes them with light sauce – as she tells the waiters, “I don’t want them swimming in sauce, just lightly coated.”  You know the taste of the sauce without wearing the sauce all over your face, fingers and shirt.  Mom/dad gave this buffalo shrimp both hands up yummy!

The third appetizer that mom/dad got was called Shrimp Orleans.  These are shrimp wrapped in bacon and a cajun spice.  They are then pan blackened and served with a creole mustard.  Now first up, thank goodness I’m not that kind of pig, right?  Mom/dad said these were interesting.  Of course that’s like hearing Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods saying something is interesting.  We all know what kind of food he eats and the translation of interesting means it’s okay, nothing to write home about folks.  Personally mom thought they could be a little bit more spicy since they are Shrimp Orleans.  And in the bigger scheme of things, put them below the hot bread and cheese.

This leads us up to what dad calls the best thing that has ever passed his lips.  And you know my friends, this has to be good because dad is a professional eater.  This was the final appetizer that mom/dad ordered and it was a special that day.  Mom/dad can’t remember what the ‘official’ name was but it is deep fried pork.  I know – I know – I should be scared since daddy liked this but mom says I’m safe.  The kitchen took pork that was already cooked, floured it and deep fried the already goodness into cute little pork bites.  It was served with a somewhat spicy barbeque sauce on the side.  In fact, mom says she could go for some of these right now.  Thanks mom.  That makes my kind feel safe – snorts with piggy laughter.

So my friends.  Thanks for traveling in the south with me and I hope you enjoyed some of these food break downs.  Until next time, keep eating good food!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Shrimp

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Nam😻e:  Shrimp (aka “Her Highness”)

Age:  7 years

Location:   Oregon, USA

Web/Blog Page:  Hairballexpress  or on Twitter: @Cheap_Trills

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  “DUDE! NEW CAN
OPENERS!!”

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  .The humans had picked up a few of my sisters and my brother, and then picked me up, and I started batting human #1’s earrings, and both she and human #2 said, “This is the one!” at the same time!😾

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   When I dropped that nice, fresh house fly into the human’s coffee. How was I to know she only likes half and half?

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why?  😹 BOTH -(I’m just that Good)!  But definitely human #1 most of all. Her heart melts when I trill and tuck her in every night.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  That I’m safe. (They haven’t seen what I can do to a mouse).

Journey to Israel – Part II

Welcome my friends to my second installment of Journey to Israel.  This is a trip that my Aunt made over the Christmas holidays.  If you missed the first part of getting to Israel, check it out here.  Part of the adventure was getting there.  Today, I bring you some pictures of Israel and the journey my Aunt took.

For some reason when I pictured where we would be staying while we were in Israel, I never thought modern or updated – LOL.  Go figure huh?  Well, I was happily impressed with our lodging. This is the building with balconies that overlook the city.  See the beautiful clouds – the temperature during our stay at Christmas time was around the 70’s – perfect weather for exploring the lands.

This is another picture overlooking where we stayed – you can see more of the city in it.  You feel old country – you kind of settle into a different world from what you have been accustomed all of your life.  Such an adventure that we couldn’t wait to go exploring in the city.  And you hear nightmare stories of safety.  Personally, we didn’t feel at all afraid of anywhere we went.  The people were open and friendly – always there with suggestions of what to eat or what to see.

One of the first adventures we went on, it had been raining and we stumbled upon the glorious rainbow picture showing a bus coming down the street.  What better way to say welcome to Israel?  And as you can imagine, there are a lot of ‘touristy’ areas but there are also a lot of areas that showed how old the land really was, how mountainous and vast some areas are.

Here are some pictures of some food that we tried and a coke can – do you recognize anything?

Food Porn

Licking my piggy lips right now my friends as I look at this treasure of food porn.  Mom/dad went out last night on a date – which is another story in itself – snorts.  But look at what they had for dinner – OMP!  They went to this restaurant called Bay Breeze which is located in Lovejoy, Georgia.  It’s known for their portions and wonderfully delightful food.  Now, we are in the south and you know our motto – if you slow down too long, we will fry it 🙂

So mom/dad decided to split this ONE meal.  Yes friends – that is ONE meal.  Fried flounder, popcorn shrimp and Jumbo shrimp.  What you don’t see under all of that is french fries and hush puppies.  And mom said there was a side of slaw not in the picture.  ALL THAT FOOD and it only cost like $13 bucks for everything.  Awesome deal huh?  And daddy said they had plenty.

Food Porn – To Twist or Not To Twist That is the Question

Here in this picture we see shrimp pasta – does’t it look delicious?  This comes from one of mom/dad’s favorite restaurants called Red Lobster.  They just love their shrimp pasta.  They were sharing this dish and I was looking at it when it dawned on me about something.  Look closely at the picture and kind of lean your head to the left.  You see there are two forks.  Now let’s talk about techniques in the eating of pasta shall we.  I’ve learned that this is a treacherous position to take with some folks but I’m up for the piggy challenge.  Are you?

Now, personally, I would just chomp that fine looking shrimp pasta all down without coming up for air.  It looks great to me.  But humans, they use forks and manners which dad reminds me of often that I don’t have.  Hmmpphh – so says the man who burps the alphabet huh?

Dad believes in the fork straight down and twist to get all pasta in one giant happy scoop.  Mom is not a twist kind of person.  She believes in ‘cutting’ the pasta and then scooping it up to her awaiting mouth.  Why does she do this?  She says because as a child her dad would play tic-tac-toe with her on spaghetti night.  Come again mom?  Have you been drinking the vodka today already?

Really, she says that spaghetti night was hard for a kid to learn the twist thing.  So her dad would make a tic-tac-toe chart on her plate breaking up the spaghetti and ‘cutting’ it into the pattern.  He would then challenge her to the game and eating it.  Thus, this is why she cuts it.  Does that make sense?  A nearly fifty something still playing with her food.  And mom/dad fuss at me for playing with mine.  Some things are just not fair.

So the question is my friends – to twist or not to twist.

Bashful Out and About

Oh friends – here’s another adventure that my little tyke Bashful had while he was home here at the Hotel Thompson in the past couple of weeks. We had quite a few people call and ask to go out with Bashful while he was home – we had a schedule of events – this is one of them.

Some friends wanted to meet at our local Red Lobster restaurant for a meet and greet.  When we finally got seated, our table section had a blue light over it and mom *had* to take a picture.

Daddy said that it should be fine as long as it wasn’t in a ‘red light’ district.  Shaking piggy head.  I didn’t get that joke but apparently mom did and she snorted.  I wonder where she gets that from?

So everyone huddled around our table looking at and discussing the menu options.  Of course, Bashful was right there in the middle of it all putting in his two cents of what he wanted to eat – you might as well just ordered one of everything – snorts.

Bashful was really excited about going to Red Lobster.  He told me that he has fallen in love with seafood of any kind… a long with all kinds of other food.  What can I say?  The little bloke likes to eat.  I wonder where he gets that from?  Shakes head wondering.

Well, don’t you know the first thing Bashful did was jump on one of Red Lobster’s famous cheesy garlic biscuits.  They were hot and straight from the oven.  Mom told him to blow on it first because she didn’t want him burning his tongue.  Bashful told mom that some of his ancestors can withstand heat so he was fine jumping right in the biscuit and eating his way out.

Then daddy had ordered some Clam Chowder.  And guess who had to take a chunky dunk into it to eat his way out?  Yep, shaking head.  You guessed it – Bashful.  I tell you for a small tyke, that rock can eat!  He said it was delicious.  Dad said he thought it was good but the only thing he got to taste was one single potato.  Thanks Bashful for sharing – snorts with piggy laughter.

Then, it was time to order the main entrees.  Now during this time at Red Lobster, they had their shrimp special taking place – it was all you can eat Shrimp.  One of mom/dad’s favorite times of the year for this particular restaurant.  Mommy couldn’t wait to taste her food.  She ordered succulent Shrimp Scampi – look at the size of those shrimp, fried shrimp and french fries well done.

Doesn’t that plate look awesome?  I have to admit it.  I licked mom’s iPhone when I saw the picture.  And I also have to admit that Bashful, of course, jumped right on mom’s plate and started gobbling like he had never eaten before.  I tell you my friends.  If I ate like that little guy, this little oinker would be 400 pounds!  But thank goodness it was all you can eat so mom could get some more since Bashful ate it all.  And hey you know what?  They brought me home a piggy bag – happy dance – shake your butt – happy dance.  Hope you enjoyed this little adventure with my guy.

Food Porn – Part 2

So mom/dad’s first destination was for dinner at a place called Pappasito’s Cantina located in Marietta, Georgia.  They had been here once before a very long time ago and absolutely loved it.  They talk about it all of the time so I thought it would bring back some wonderful memories for them to reminisce over.

This is a picture of mom/dad once they got sat at one of the tables.  The wait staff is wonderful and so very friendly.  They offered to take this picture for mom/dad for their anniversary album.  It looks like they are happy with my dining decision, you think?

One of mom’s favorite drinks at the moment is anything with mango.  She told the waiter that she wanted something mango, frozen and delicious.  He brought back this delightfully frozen concoction.  Mommy said it was one of the bestest drinks that she has *ever* had.  It had an ultimate mango taste to it – which is something you usually don’t find flavor wise when you order a mango drink.  Sometimes you just can’t taste what you order, you know?  But this was a Mango Margarita and was right up mom’s alley saying it was awesome.  And it was garnished with chunks of strawberries and mango.  How lovely huh?  Even daddy drunk some and he even loved it too.

During this time while they were enjoying the drinks, they also enjoyed this appetizer with nacho chips.  Score one for the piggy because I had a coupon for mom/dad for this free appetizer – a $11.00 value – snorts.  They choose a is yellow cheese dip garnished with jalapeno’s, tomatoes, onions and ground beef.

Now both mom/dad totally flipped over these cheese dip.  It was spicy but yet not so much that you couldn’t enjoy it.  It did have heat though and both mom/dad said that it opened up their sinuses – snorts.

And daddy totally LOVED the nacho chips.  They were thin with just enough salt with the heat of the cheese dip and delicious!  He couldn’t stay out of the bag and from what mom said, I don’t blame him.  I love a crispy hot chip myself!

Then angels started to sing and mom/dad knew their main course have floated to their table from the kitchen.  Oh my piggy heaven above!  Talk about hog heaven indeed.  Let me break it down for you because my mouth was so watering when mommy showed me the pictures.  I just wanted to lick the screen so bad!

They ordered filet mignon and Jumbo Shrimp fajitas.  It came with rice, frijoles a la charra, pico de gallo and guacamole.  Just look at all of that food!  Now the shrimp that you see to the left, that is Pappasitos famous shrimp brochette.  The shrimp it mesquite-grilled and then stuffed with cheese & fresh jalapenos and if that wasn’t enough – they wrap it with bacon.  What bacon?!  I can give mom/dad a bone on this one since it was a special occasion.   The sauce is a avocado lime butter.  Mom said it was heavenly!  The dinner also came with fresh flour tortillas.  Mom and dad ate to their delight.  Daddy told me that there was more groaning going on at the table than what he has heard in such a long time… I’m not sure what that meant.

Can you believe that there was room for an anniversary dessert?  There was.  And I admit it that I was shocked because mom/dad said they couldn’t finish it all.  Amateurs!

They order Cajetas which is coconut pecan crusted vanilla ice cream that was drizzled with chocolate sauce and served with sopapillas – those big puffy things.  And do you see the Honey Bear in the picture to the right.  He also came served with the dessert so they could pour honey over whatever they wanted to.  I asked daddy if Mr. Honey Bear traveled with them to the second destination but he refrained from answering me saying something about me being to young to ask that kind of question.  This dessert was as wonderful as the appetizer and meal.  Mom said she hasn’t eaten this well in some time and whatever weight she has lost lately probably found it’s way back to her butt and hips – snorts.

So now I leave you with video 2 – enjoy my friends.  P.S.  Come back Wednesday for more information on the anniversary kidnapping – there is more that you don’t want to miss!

Mom’s Food Porn

Come on my friends… scoot up and get closer to the computer screen.  I have a new edition of Mom’s Food Porn.  A couple of weeks ago, mom/dad went to a place called Joe’s Crab Shack.  This is a chain restaurant that serves seafood.  Mom had a coupon (go mom!) for a free appetizer and plus they had a special going on for dinner.  I’ll tell you about that in a minute.

Let’s talk about the appetizer first.  Mom/Dad choose a sampler platter of fried calamari, crab dip with chips and something called great balls of fire.  The calamari was okay – this is fried squid.  Mom/dad said they have had better.  This was a little rubbery so they were thinking it was overcooked.  It’s in picture to the left – the curly looking things.  The crab dip in the middle was something that mom was hesitant about trying.  It’s loaded with crab meat, cream cheese and Parmesan.  Mom was pleasantly surprised that it was totally delicious!  In the left hand upper corner, that is the great balls of fire.  They are crab balls full of jalapeños and cream cheese coated in panko breadcrumbs.  Again, these were totally delicious!  So the appetizer wasn’t that bad for FREE – right?

Now for the main meal, Joe’s had a special where you could get 33 shrimp for $11.99 – so that’s what mom/dad went for.  The shrimp were coconut, beer battered and BBQ Rub peal and eat.  This was another winner here served with french fries.  The only down fall, the peel and eat were like deep fried.  They were delicious but if you are going to deep fry them, why not peel them first?  Of course, this is just a personal wish from mom.

So have you eaten at Joe’s lately?

The Valentines Date to Remember

You voted for it and the two winners were Benedict and Rockelle for their hot date on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2014.  The day started off with a lot of primping, planning and excitement.  Manny and Bashful helped Benedict get ready for the day as Princess Coralena and Virginia helped Rockelle.

20140216-172640.jpg

The day started off with the exchanging of some gifts.  In the picture to the left, Benedict gave Rockelle a special box of chocolates telling her how he feels.  Notice, “You Caught My Eye” was written on the box.  Nice touch Benedict!  In the picture to the right, Rockelle gave Benedict a red hot love ducky because she went quackers for him.  Nice touch Rockelle.

20140216-172621.jpg

.

Then, it was time for dinner.  Mom and dad researched a lot of restaurants that would be unique for the happy couple.  Something that touched both of them in

a different way.  Something that made them think of their homelands.  You know since Rockelle is from Australia and Benedict is

from the United Kingdom.  A place maybe they didn’t have from their birth places but something  that was unique to the United States.  Then the light bulbs went off in their heads and they knew of the perfect place.  Reservations were made and mom/dad (AKA the chauffers for the night) then bundled the two up for their romantic dinner.

20140216-182140.jpg

Yep, that’s right.  They went to Hooters on Tara Boulevard.  The night started off with some shots in the picture to the left.  After a few shots, Benedict and Rockelle loosed up a bit and started talking about their feelings for each other.  In the picture to the right, you can tell that there was a magnetic pull to each other.  Perhaps love was starting to erupt?

.

20140216-182157.jpg

. They did a few shots to loosen up – you know liquid courage.  Hooters is a great place that plays a variety of different music.  Once they were loosed up, they were rocking to the music.  Benedict asked Rockelle to dance.  They did the electric rock slide and the pebble shuffle… you know instead of the two step or twerking.

.

.

20140216-182208.jpg

.

After the shots and all of that dancing, they thought they might need to get something on their stomachs.  You know drinking without eating makes one light headed and who knows what would roll around then?  They started with some buffalo shrimp.  Who needs utensils?  It is finger food so they both dived into the plate.  Benedict was such a gentleman and actually wiped some sauce off of Rockelle’s face.  Of course the proper way would have been by using a napkin instead of using his tongue.  But she seemed to like it.

.

Both liked fish so they decided to order the big fried fish sandwich.  It was enough to share.  And there is a reason that it’s called the big fish sandwich.  Do you see how big that fish is? This was certainly one that didn’t get away and was a keeper.   Benedict started on one side and Rockelle started on the other side.  They met in the middle.  And the little round things are tater tots. It’s often been said that Benedict looks like a potato so it isn’t a shocker that he absolutely loved the tots.  20140216-182219.jpg

20140216-182230.jpg And Hooters, they are known for their wings.  Yeah, that’s right. They’re known for their delicious wings.  They got some of those to try as well.  What’s a great night out if you don’t have lots of food.  And they were there for several hours getting to know each other.  The wings were fried, breaded and medium – mmmm – Rockelle loved them.

And, of course there is one more thing you have to do when you are at Hooters.  I’m not sure if you are familiar with this restaurant.  The staff is wonderful, gracious and very out going.  They were wonderful to Benedict and Rockelle on their special date night.  And since this was their first time at the restaurant, they wanted to give them a memory in a picture.  So, they all decided to have their picture taken with the special couple.

 20140216-182240.jpg

Notice the two in the picture.  And the girls were gorgeous.  But after the photograph, Benedict assured Rockelle that she was the beauty and he only had eyes for her.  aaww – way to go Benedict!  20140216-182249.jpg

After they left Hooters, they didn’t want the date to end.  They decided they needed something sweet.  And again, Benedict came through.  While they were in the back seat, mom/dad overheard Benedict tell Rockelle there was nothing they could get that would be sweeter than her.  I think by this point they were holding hands as well.

They decided they wanted ice cream so mom/dad (AKA Chauffers) took them to Baskin Robins where they enjoyed a scoop of snickers ice cream.  By this time, they wanted to sit at a separate table from mom/dad so they could talk by themselves.  Mom and dad heard a lot of giggles so it seems they were getting along great.

20140216-182257.jpgDate night must have went really well because the next morning, Benedict and Rockelle were seen in the kitchen sharing a heart shaped doughnut.  This special date night might be the start of something fabulous – maybe even a great relationship like Bogey and McCall.  One never knows.

So friends, pat yourselves on the backs for a wonderful twosome.

I would like extend a special thank you to Mike Fiely the manager at Hooters and his wonderful staff located at 6785 Tara Boulevard, Jonesboro.  Ya’ll really helped this little piggy out in making this special date night one to remember for my pet rocks.  I would say, “You Rock!”
