Travels in the South

Oh my friends – mom/dad found the *best* local seafood restaurant.  It is called Fishers of Men and they are located at 1500 Mt Zion Road, Suite 20, Morrow.  They are open everyday except Sunday.

Mom/dad went there one Saturday night to check it out and they have since been back repeatedly.  Why?  Let me tell you why mom/dad like it so much.

The food is authentic.  As you’ve read on my blog, mom/dad like to travel and they like to eat.  They’ve eaten everywhere.  And this place can hold their own with some of the other restaurants they’ve been to all over the world.

The atmosphere is home. You go in, order and pay for your food.  Then you  find a comfy spot and wait smelling all of that deliciousness being created in the kitchen for your order.  There’s no rush to herd you out of the restaurant like some places do.  Everything is cooked fresh to order so it comes out sizzling hot.

And let me tell you one more thing.  You may go in as a stranger but you will leave as family.

When mom/dad went the first time, they ordered two of the whiting and shrimp dinners.  That’s four pieces of whiting and thirteen shrimp with fries.  They didn’t have any clue how much food they would get.  Look at all of that food!  And yes, dad said they snorted it all down – can you believe that?

There is a LOT of pictures below that mom/dad wanted to share with you – no they didn’t order everything at once – snorts with piggy laughter.  As I’ve said, they have been there many times in the past couple of weeks.

As they like to tell one of the owners Arlene, they are working their way through the menu.  Today, I wanted to share with you some of their fabulous food.  And, if you are in the area we highly suggest you try this place.

You will not regret it!  In fact, as mom/dad try more of their food, you might see them here again on Travels in the South.

.

Now try not to get too hungry looking at these gorgeous pictures!

In no particular order, the following pictures are:  scallops (sweet, succulent and flaky on the inside like they should be); crab sticks (we had to ask what these were too!  crab meat breaded and fried); oysters and catfish; whiting and shrimp; whiting and the best seafood salad and clams.  And let me add by saying there french fries are crispy and there onion rings are out of this world!!  Mom/dad have also tried their wonderful cole slaw and grits.  Yes grits are good for you!

Travels in the South

Welcome friends to another Travels in the South.  This week mom/dad went seafood.  At our local Joe’s Crab Shack, they have an appetizer that mom/dad like to get and share.  Pair it with a salad and you can say perfect meal.  What is this appetizer?  Joe’s Crab Shack calls it Crab Nachos.  Mom/dad call it a little heaven.

It has almost everything in it – lots of delicious crab dip, pico de gallo, black beans, lettuce, corn, cheese and an awesome avocado lime dressing.  And there are plenty of nachos to scoop everything up with and enjoy.  And the bonus is that the nachos don’t get soggy.  You know how sometimes they get limp and wet with regular nacho toppings.

So the next time you are craving something seafood but with a curb of delight, check out your local Joe’s Crab Shack for this delicious appetizer… or make it a meal like my mom/dad do.

Mom’s Food Porn

Come on my friends… scoot up and get closer to the computer screen.  I have a new edition of Mom’s Food Porn.  A couple of weeks ago, mom/dad went to a place called Joe’s Crab Shack.  This is a chain restaurant that serves seafood.  Mom had a coupon (go mom!) for a free appetizer and plus they had a special going on for dinner.  I’ll tell you about that in a minute.

Let’s talk about the appetizer first.  Mom/Dad choose a sampler platter of fried calamari, crab dip with chips and something called great balls of fire.  The calamari was okay – this is fried squid.  Mom/dad said they have had better.  This was a little rubbery so they were thinking it was overcooked.  It’s in picture to the left – the curly looking things.  The crab dip in the middle was something that mom was hesitant about trying.  It’s loaded with crab meat, cream cheese and Parmesan.  Mom was pleasantly surprised that it was totally delicious!  In the left hand upper corner, that is the great balls of fire.  They are crab balls full of jalapeños and cream cheese coated in panko breadcrumbs.  Again, these were totally delicious!  So the appetizer wasn’t that bad for FREE – right?

Now for the main meal, Joe’s had a special where you could get 33 shrimp for $11.99 – so that’s what mom/dad went for.  The shrimp were coconut, beer battered and BBQ Rub peal and eat.  This was another winner here served with french fries.  The only down fall, the peel and eat were like deep fried.  They were delicious but if you are going to deep fry them, why not peel them first?  Of course, this is just a personal wish from mom.

So have you eaten at Joe’s lately?

Dear Bacon

Dear Bacon,20140217-042346.jpg

Let this be a warning to your readers.  Don’t smoke.  I was suppose to be an awesome lobster.  But I started smoking when I was younger therefore I stayed as a crawfish.  Snap, I was that close.  Signed Shorty

Dear Shorty,
Great heads up to our younger readers.  Thank you for sharing your story my friend.  Stay strong and be proud of who you are.

Have you ever been out on the town with some bun-bun’s?  We would show you a great time in our pink Corvette! Signed Trio of Fun

Dear Trio of Fun,
Awesome!  The next time you are cruising through my town, stop by and see me.  It would be awesome to drive around in your pink Corvette!

It’s like this.  I really thought I saw a Milk Bone in the middle of the cushions.  I dived in without thinking.  Probably not one of my best ideas but hey it works, not.  Signed Tails Up

Dear Tails Up,
Just have to ask my friend.  Did you find the Milk Bone?  How long were you left in that position?  It does look interesting.  I don’t think I could personally do that.  Darn this pot-belly, snorts.  But hey, if it works for you and you got the gold, then it was an awesome free dive.  Take care my friend and keep chasing Milk Bones.

Dear Bacon,20140217-042459.jpg

There’s no denying the family in this picture.  I was tired being the master cat so I took a nap.  The next thing I knew, my mini-me was right beside me in the same position.  I think he’s a a chip off the old block, you think?  Signed Copy Cat

Dear Copy Cat,
AAWWW – that is so adorable.  A family that sleeps together, stays together.  Ya’ll are so cute and comfy.  I wonder if I can get into that position.  I’m off to try it.  I’ll let you know.  Sweet dreams!

.

Dear Bacon,20140217-042529.jpg

Have you ever been so tired that when someone calls your name you don’t get up.  You just kind of give them this look to see if it’s worthy of you moving from that most comfortable position.  Yeah, unless it involves food or outside, I’m good.  Signed Sleepyhead

Dear Sleepyhead,
I can related to what you are speaking of my friend.  There are days that I am so like that.  If it is worthy to move, I will.  If not, a couple of more minutes of shut eye is so worth it!

Stowaway on Vacation

20131028-222242.jpg

No trip to Tybee Island is complete without first a visit to the famous Crab Shack where their logo is “Where the elite eat in their bare feet”. Mom and dad have been going here for years – much longer than they would like to admit because it would give away their age – snorts. You can eat ‘inside’ or ‘outside’ in nature near the water amidst the wondering cats that wonder the grounds.  Notice the pretty kitty in the picture to the right.  That’s one of the cats that wonder around while you are eating.  They don’t even beg for food… well they haven’t with mom/dad.  hhmm – maybe because mom/dad make the food disappear too quickly.  I’ll have to check into this.

20131027-182947.jpg

This picture to the left is where you walk up to request a table. They were still decorated for pirate fest and it looks like one of the mateys didn’t make it past the gator – PLOL (piggy laughing out loud).

Mom and dad highly recommend this restaurant to newcomers or oldcomers. It’s a place to let down your hair, kick off your sandals and snarf down some excellent food. And if you know my mom/dad, they are creatures of habit. They always get the same meal when they go there – with the exception of maybe an appetizer or soup.

.

20131027-182855.jpg

But before I talk about that, I have to tell you about a little stowaway they had. I can’t say that I’m surprised because I helped the little fellow jump in their suitcase – snorts. What? He wanted to go to the beach and he hadn’t seen the humans in a while. It was all in good fun.

So mom/dad found him all hidden in their suitcase so of course they had to rescue him. He was so thirsty from being hidden for the long four hours so he had to get a drink from dad’s soda at the restaurant. And of course after a potty break, he said he was extremely hungry. So mom/dad let him look at the menu so he could order first… you know being famished and all.

.

20131027-182842.jpg

He ordered a huge platter of steamed food. I’m not sure who was more shocked when it came – us or the waitress – when he looked at it and said, “That’s mine, where’s ya’lls?” The little booger.

Mom and dad told him he couldn’t eat it all in one setting – my goodness he would be a boulder and unable to ride in the Smart car back home if he did. Upon that reasoning, he decided to share his feast with mom/dad.

.

20131028-221752.jpg

There was potatoes, corn, crab legs, Jonah crab, sausage, shrimp and mussels. Mom described it in one word – delicious. They also had key lime pie but dad made it disappear so fast that mom didn’t get a chance to even take a picture of it!

After that mountain of seafood, mom and dad decided to take Bashful for a walk around the restaurant. I’ll tell you for a moment they thought they were down under visiting our good friend Fozzie at http://dinz1234.wordpress.com/ Of course, hers are bigger – snorts. But they were still scary and oh so close for picture taking. And yes, they are real my friends. Bashful got scared and hid back in mom’s pocket. He’s so shy.

They would actually let you feed these gators hanging out in the pond. Mom didn’t get a picture but there was actually a sign hung up that stated, “Do not feed your children to the alligators. They may make them sick.” Snorts.

I hope you enjoyed these – more to come later!

Foodie Pictures

You all should know by now that I am a hardcore foodie. You ever wonder where I get that from? My mom and dad of course – snorts. Now those humans know how to snarf. They ate some wonderful food last week on vacation at Tybee Island. And of course, they took pictures to share with me. I’m passing them along. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. 🙂

20131027-185119.jpg

I know a lot of you know who Paula Deen is – she is southern gold here in the south. Mom and dad try to go to her restaurant every time they visit. She has an awesome southern buffet bar. This is a picture of moms plate from The Lady and the Sons.
Her buffet has everything – greens, Mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, rice, mashed potatoes, baked and fried chicken and BBQ just to name a few. And they had buttermilk cheese biscuits.

Mommy said daddy even had two hoes – hoe cakes that is – snorts.  I told you they get into trouble unattended!

What you might not know is that Paula Deen has a brother who also has a restaurant. His restaurant is called Uncle Bubbas. Mom and dad went to his restaurant one night as well. His restaurant goes towards more seafood which is something you kind of crave at the sea, right? Mommy always gets the same thing – shrimp and grits. She says it’s totally awesome and loves it. Daddy always gets the full Bubba which has a little bit of everything. 20131027-185717.jpg20131027-185731.jpg

Mom and dad said a couple of years ago they even met Uncle Bubba. They have a picture somewhere. I’ll have to find it. When they met him, Uncle Bubba asked mom what she did for a living. Daddy told him that she was a big girl stripper. I’m not sure what that is but Uncle Bubba seemed totally smitten with it.

They also loved the food at a local breakfast place called The Breakfast Club. Mom would have coffee on the balcony at their hotel room watching the sun come up over the ocean and then they would walk down to this restaurant. This is an absolute favorite place to eat. It’s almost like a dive from the outside but inside the smells make your tummy start rumbling for some food. The first day they went, dad had to get eggs benedict and mom got chops. That picture scared me at first until she explained it was a different type of oinker. Still scary though – shivers. And mom says this restaurant is the only place that knows how to do hash browns proper…well done and crispy. You judge.

So what do you think of these food pictures so far? There’s so much more to share later. I’m so excited to share those with you – more tomorrow my friends.
