Shopping Around the World
Shopping Around the World is hosted by us and our friend Fozziemom. This month since it is the Thanksgiving holidays here in the States, we are focusing on Thanksgiving foods. We have elected to post a side dish that everyone loves here in the south – black-eyed peas. Yummo! I admit that even this little oinker loves these peas. They are tasty… but of course I like mine without the bacon – you know for obvious reasons – snorts and rolls with piggy laughter. I leave the recipe and other delights of this recipe to mom – take it away mom! ❤

Black-eyed peas. Some people hear the name and stick out their tongue making a grimace while others smile and can’t wait to jump in feet first and eat their way out of the bowl. Which category do you fall into my friends? You’re not sure yet? Let me tell you my recipe and then you can make your choice. You will need the following:
⇔ Two cans of black-eyed peas (you can use fresh peas- I take help where I can) $0.98 each = $1.96
⇔ Four slices of bacon $3.99 pack/12 slices = $1.32
⇔ Cilantro $1.49 a pack; onion $0.49; olive oil $6.99 bottle; red pepper flakes $1.49 bottle = $1.50
Total Cost per Dish $4.78
The first thing we do is get out the old southern iron skillet. Put a tad of oil in the bottom, cut up the bacon strips and fry them in the skillet. While the bacon is cooking, dice up your onion and chop up your cilantro. Once the bacon has cooked, scoop out the fried bacon and put on a paper towel to drain. Leave the bacon grease in the skillet and add your onions to give them some color. While the onions are cooking, open your cans of black-eyed peas, drain them and wash them. Now some people use the juice out of the can, we don’t. If you like it, by all means use it. Once the onions have some color, pour in your two cans of black-eyed peas. Season with salt, pepper and red pepper flakes to your taste. Your black-eyed peas will have a semi fried taste – awesome. Trust me. Once everything is heated through, pour into a serving dish and top with cilantro and your fried bacon. You will never want black-eyed peas the old way again 🙂

Hello sweet friends –
Don’t forget about our important dates next week – after the holidays. Keep these in mind while you enjoy your holiday 🙂 ❤
Shopping Around the World
Shopping Around the World is hosted by us and our friend Fozziemom. This month it is scheduled for November 30th – after the holiday so we can all make plans. Since it is the Thanksgiving holidays here in the States, this month we will focus on Thanksgiving foods. So, you can post appetizers, side dishes, salads, soups, main entrees or desserts. What is something that you look forward to once a year at Thanksgiving. I mean yes we can have it throughout the year but having it at Thanksgiving screams the holiday? This gives you a wide variety of foods you can come up with. Fix whatever your dish is, take pictures and post it with recipes and prices on November 30th on your blog. Remember to link back to my blog posting so people can see yours. This is a wonderful way to (1) meet new friends in blogville and (2) get some wonderful recipes. And I’ll admit it. This piggy has been known to visit on these days and lick the computer screen at some of your awesome dishes. I’m just sayin’ – some of pictures look out of this world!!

Bacon’s Show and Tell
To me, what better time of the year to share some embarrassing stories from Thanksgiving. Did you gather as a family for dinner and someone do something hilarious? Did you have a mishap and spill your plate or cut the turkey in a strange way? Go ahead my friends, let’s talk about something funny our humans do or did during their Thanksgiving holidays. I know these stories will be good! Bacon’s Show and Tell is scheduled for November 29th due to the holiday. Remember to do your blog and link back to my blog so we can all see what everyone shares. Thanks my friend – can’t wait for some great stories.

Thanks to everyone for another great edition of Shopping Around the World last month. It’s so awesome to see the various prices around the world – and the pictures with recipes!
This month we are concentrating on salads and I present to you mom’s salad. It has a little bit of everything and mom/dad eat these several times during the week as their meal at night. Hope you enjoy it!
.
What you Need:
1 head of lettuce ($0.98); package of grape tomatoes ($0.99); croutons (package $1.19); shredded cheese (package $2.49); Cucumber ($0.98); sliced ham (2.49 for quarter pound); mushrooms (pack $2.49); chopped walnuts ($2.49 pack); Catalina Dressing ($1.49)
Everyone knows how to put together a salad. What’s interesting is what people put ‘in’ their salads. AND if this is what’s for dinner, you want the salad to be hearty. Mom/dad eat this salad usually 3-4 times during the week, especially here in the Summer where it’s just too hot to cook anything on the stove or in the oven.
Now mom will change it up sometimes and use chicken from the night before instead of ham, or sometimes she even puts spicy pickles in the salad. It just depends on what ingredients you have on your hand.
Mom fixes an entire bucket of salad and keeps it in the refrigerator for us at night. And yes, even I eat salad – wouldn’t you with all of these ingredients? Except mine doesn’t have ham – you know for obvious reasons but chicken night we all win.
When you think about the ingredients above averaging out for 2 people and 1 pig (snorts) over 4 nights, it only equals out to $3.90 for each dinner night. Now that’s not bad at all!

Welcome my friends for another great edition of Shopping Around the World.
This month we have a suggestion from my cousin Sammy on highlighting soups for January. Now is the time to start making some wonderful hot soups for dinners that make us feel all cozy and warm. Is there a special soup that you fix? A soup that your finally raves about and requests? It does not have to be five items or less this month. Share your recipe and picture of your soup!
Mom’s soup of choice is her Spicy Cabbage Soup. Doesn’t that sound good just reading it? You can make it as spicy or not as you like. And what’s better than that? It’s simple!
2 cans of mixed vegetables, $2.38
1 can of roasted tomatoes, $1.12
1 package of sirloin, about a pound. On this date it was cheaper to buy it as a small piece of sirloin instead of it already being cubed. It was $6.50 for the pound – which was plenty because dad likes a lot of meat in his soups/stews.
1 head of cabbage, $0.99 for the head.
2 boxes of beef broth, $4.98
Seasoning in the form of pepper, flour, salt and pepper flakes.

Directions: Plug in your crock pot and put on low in the early morning before leaving for work. Pour in the two boxes of beef broth. We get the low sodium kind. Chop up the entire head of cabbage and put in the crock pot. Stir the cabbage in to make sure the broth is covering it. In the meantime, cut up your sirloin into small cubes. You can buy the sirloin that is already cut up – whatever you prefer. This date it was cheaper to buy it whole. Salt, pepper and toss the beef in a light powdering of flour. Put a little bit of olive oil in a pan over the oven and lightly color the beef to brown it. This step of coating the sirloin in flour and coloring it helps to ‘thicken’ your soup a bit and is optional. When this is done, put the beef in the crock pot. Remember to scrape the bottom of your pan with all of the bits and pieces of yummy.
Then add in your canned vegetables, roasted tomatoes, black pepper to taste and pepper flakes to taste. Remember, pepper flakes are spicy. Less is best if you are not sure what kind of spice you want. You can always add more in when you serve the individual bowls. Mom likes to serve it with cornbread or a crusty type bread for dipping. Goes great on cold rainy days or cold winter nights.

My friends – thank YOU so very much for everyone’s wonderful responses to my and Fozzie’s Shopping Around the World blog posts. We are having so much fun seeing the different prices from around the world AND looking at some intriguing recipes and dinner suggestions. They are so totally awesome! Let’s keep up the great work – remember to link back to my blog here so we can keep up with who is playing and keep up with all of the recipes.
This month we focused on FIVE items of your choice in a dessert. MMM – licking my piggy lips – this sounds so delicious already! My mommy promised to make me and daddy one of her all time wonderful desserts – Easy Peanut Butter Pie.
Now I know you are looking at this picture and going there’s six ingredients not five. Bacon, can your mom count? Yep, she can. One is up to you. Let’s break the items down first with prices:
Chocolate Graham Cracker Crust – $1.50; Jif Peanut Butter, smooth – $2.50; Lite Whip Cream – $1.00; Cream Cheese – $1.00; and Confectioner’s Sugar – $3.29; Reese’s Mini Cups – $.69= $9.98
Now you really can’t say this easy Peanut Butter Pie cost $10.00 to make because it didn’t. You’re not going to use the entire jar of peanut butter or the entire bag of confectioner’s sugar. With that in mind, I would guess perhaps around $5.00. And the Reese’s Mini cups are optional. Mom just thinks they look pretty decorated on the finished pie. And yes she got the mini cups because the paper is already taken off of them – that’s right. Mom goes for easy – easy to eat while decorating the pie that is – snorts.
Directions from mom for Easy Peanut Butter Pie:
Make sure that the cream cheese and cool whip are at room temperature. Mix the cream cheese (1 package), 1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar and 1/2 cup peanut butter until smooth. Fold in 1/2 of the whipped topping. Spoon the mixture onto the chocolate graham cracker crust. You can use regular flavor graham cracker – the chocolate just kicks it up a bit.
Please the remaining whip cream topping over the pie. Now we garnish with chopped up Reese’s peanut butter cups. This is optional. You can also drizzle with chocolate. Chill for at least two hours or overnight. Now, I would like to say that this picture is what mine looked like. We made the pie. Popped it in the fridge overnight and then after dinner the next night we had some friends over and ate the pie…. without taking a picture of it! Of course, that could have given us an excuse to make another 🙂 winks.
