Travels in the South

Welcome my friends to another edition of Travels in the South.  This week mom/dad stumbled onto something that was simply amazing – Onion Rings.

Who doesn’t love a good onion ring?  Mom/dad were visiting a place a couple of towns over from the Hotel Thompson.  They saw homemade onion rings on the menu and decided to give it a whirl.  This alone amazed me because here is a little tidbit for you.  Dad hates onions.  He hates them raw.  He hates them in salads.  BUT, he loves onion rings.  I think that’s a little weird, right?  But then again, we are talking about my daddy – snorts and rolls with piggy laughter.

The onion rings finally came to the table and oh my piggy heavens – look at that mountain of goodness!  These are huge!!  They are fresh cut, hand battered and made to order – thus the ten minute wait to get them upon ordering.

The restaurant serves them with a Cajun dipping sauce (which when mom asked was told it was a ranch sauce with cajun spices).  And it does have a little kick.  Mom/dad asked for extra dipping sauce.  Trust me, they said you needed it because look at how many onion rings you get.  And mom said the price you wouldn’t believe – $4.99 for this tower of an appetizer.

But I just have one question.  Not that they were good because mom/dad both said they were.  My question is why does daddy get to play with his food and I can’t?  Go ahead mom.  Tell me.  I’m waiting.

Mom/Dad Went to Court!

The Olde Courthouse Tavern that is – snorts with piggy laughter.  This is Wednesday so welcome to Travels in the South my friends.  Mom/dad heard about this fabulous restaurant that is a couple of towns over from us called the Olde Courthouse Tavern.  They met some friends and visited it a while back and I’ll tell you something, their food porn pictures made my little tummy rumble with excitement.  I’m actually going to have to break up this restaurant in a couple of weeks – there was way too many yum yum’s to share.  So today, we are going to start with some appetizers.

Dad is a sucker for fried cauliflower.  At this point in his life, if this is the only way that mom can get dad to eat his veggies, so be it – snorts with piggy laughter.  The restaurant cuts up cauliflower, batters it (of course here in the south you should learn by now we batter and fry anything and everything) and fry until golden brown.  They serve the fried cauliflower with a creamy horseradish sauce on the side.  Of course, mom/dad asked for extra sauce.  Now again, dad has had his share of fried cauliflower over the years so the question is how did this rank with him?  Between grunts of yum and rumblings of I can’t get enough, dad said that the restaurant scored BIG time on this appetizer.  Dad said it was some of the best fried cauliflower that he has had in some time.  Mom was surprised as well.  The bites were cut small enough for one bite and the horseradish sauce had just enough kick to say hello without setting your mouth on fire.  Both mom/dad loved it!

Anywhere that mom goes and sees pretzels, she has to try them.  This restaurant has traditional salt pretzels served with beer cheese sauce, one of mom’s favorites.  Mom is pretty picky when it comes to her pretzels.  If she is going to indulge in any bread product, it better be good.  What did mom say about these?  She loved them!  The pretzels had just enough salt – they weren’t overpowered like some can be that you immediately need water and they had enough salt where you could taste the salt.  The beer cheese was creamy and really added to the pretzels.  Even dad couldn’t keep his hands off these pretzels.  So score two out of three so far.

Now for the onion rings.  Out of the three appetizers, everyone agreed that the onion rings were the least favorite.  Don’t get them wrong.  They were tasty and crunchy.  They looked as fantastic as they tasted.  However, they just didn’t have the same pizazz that the other two appetizers had.  Yes they would get them again but they wouldn’t be at the top of mom/dad’s list.  Now join us next week to check out some entrees that everyone enjoyed – you don’t want to miss it!

Road Trip – Food Porn – Be Warned

20140710-082930-30570080.jpg

My mom is forever coming up with road trips for her and dad to take.  Sometimes she tells dad of her destination and other times she doesn’t.  This was one of those times she didn’t.  She told daddy, “Be ready in 15 minutes – road trip.”

Daddy got as excited as a two year going on vacation to Disney World.  He busily got ready and was in Albert waiting in 12 minutes.  I know cause I timed him – snorts.

So off they went in the Albert the Smart car, weaving in and out of downtown Atlanta traffic until they got to their destination – you got it The Varsity.  Daddy was in pig heaven.  He ❤ this place.  You know road trips have to revolve around food with those two.  Now you know where I get my food love from – snorts.

The Varsity they went to is located downtown Atlanta, Georgia.  This is the world’s largest drive-in and is very popular here in Georgia.  You are greeted as soon as you enter in the order lines with, “What’ll Ya Have?  What’ll Ya Have?”  It’s busy – especially if there is a game going on downtown.  I took this information off of their website:

“It sells more than two miles of hot dogs daily, a ton of onion rings, 2500 pounds of fresh cut potatoes, 5000 homemade fried pies, and 300 gallons of chili, all of which are made from scratch daily.”

That’s a lot ‘What’ll Ya Have’ my friends.  But I promised some food porn.  I didn’t forget.  I took all of these pictures from mom’s cell phone… which I might have borrowed when they got back home… and yes they brought me back some onion rings – snorts.  These pictures below are of mom and dad’s plate.  Which one do you think is which?  Mom likes her dogs with chili and mustard.  Dad prefers the works – chili, cheese and slaw.  Look good?

Oh, and you heard me mention onion rings right?  They have the BEST onion rings.  Of course, this place is not for the diet at heart – trust me on that one.  Mommy says she gains weight just by SMELLING the food.  But this below – aaww goodness piggy down.  These onion rings are the bomb!  Mom and dad brought me some back.  Heaven.  That’s what I was in – piggy heaven!  Look at those crisp delightful rings.  Drool

You can not go to The Varsity without more fat being added to your butt dessert.  Mom and dad’s favorite is a warm fried peach pie topped with two scoops of ice cream.  Why two scoops?  Because mommy likes Turtle Track ice cream and daddy likes the Butter Pecan ice cream.  Perfect dessert to share.  See goodness below.

20140710-082925-30565836.jpgAnd was this a dad approved road trip?  You be the judge of that in this picture to the left.  Yes, that is a Varsity hat he is wearing.  I think mommy took that picture in mid chew.  Glad to know I’m not the only one that doesn’t have any privacy.

You go daddy – keep chewing.  That’s the best sign that he is a very happy man.

The next time you are in Atlanta, be sure to check out The Varsity.  I know mom and dad will be back again…and again… and again.
