Welcome my friends to a new year of adventure and great food!
Today we are highlighting great sandwiches of any kind. Mom/dad here at the Hotel Thompson are the king and queen of sandwiches. Sometimes they are huge and sometimes they are just something thrown between two slices of bread. You never know with those two. One of dad’s favorite sandwiches is a club on wheat bread. There is a local sandwich shop that he always wants to frequent… that is until mom created this monster for him. Now dad welcomes mom’s club sandwiches any day. So without further ado – take it away mom!
What you will need: Hoagie buns (a package of six cost $2.00 – $0.33 each bun); Meats – you get whatever you want from the deli. We get a 1/2 pound of roast beef, ham and turkey. Of course, a 1/2 pound makes multiple sandwiches. They range from $4-$6.00 for each selection. If you had to break it down, it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.75 per sandwich with all three meats. Cheese – we also get 1/2 pound of provolone for $3.50. It costs around $0.50 per sandwich for each sandwich. Chips – we buy the store brand of chips for $1.00 a bag. There are multiple servings per bag. So somewhere around $0.25 per serving. And we always keep pickles and olives on hands – always for nibbling. So each sandwich will cost you around less than $3.00 per sandwich. Not really bad and they are yummy!

Here is the fun part – arrange the sandwich however you want. Pure and simple, right? LOL – we prefer a little mayo on one side of the sandwich and a little mustard on the opposite side. You can use a sampling of all three meats or just the ones you want. Add the cheese. Now we have even used a panini press in the past and squished this sandwich making it hot or you can just serve it cold like this picture – whichever works for you. It’s a simple sandwich but so delicious and easy.
You can even make them in advance and cut them into little pieces for a big football party. We’ve done that before as well. These are so easy to fix ahead of time. Just a thought with the Super Bowl coming up my friends ❤

Today’s Shopping Around the World is being hosted by our cousins Teddy and Angel Sammy from TWOspoiledcats. This month Teddy and Angel Sammy are hosting main meals that do not have meat. Now this is a tough one. Anyone that knows my daddy, knows that he is definitely a meateater. So mom got creative. She told daddy he had to come up with a meatless dinner. HA! It’s not so funny or easy when the job falls on the daddy. Good one mom! So without further ado, this is what daddy came up with for Shopping Around the World.
Dad here. I told the mom I had this one. I can do a meatless dinner. Sure I can. I have that much talent. Okay, maybe it’s not how the mommy does things on Shopping Around the World but I’m a man… give me a break this time okay. So over the weekend since we had a difficult time, I told the wifey I had dinner. That’s when we went to a restaurant called Mellow Mushroom. See, I know you are suppose to cook and post recipes but I do have a visual impairment so I get a learning curve, right? Thanks friends.

We started out by ordering a lil salad to share. It had romaine and iceberg lettuce, shredded carrots, red cabbage, onions, cucumbers, green peppers, mushrooms, Kalamata olives, Roma tomatoes and mozzarella. See that’s a great start. And I added candied pecans for crunch. Yummo! The salad cost $4.49 and there was plenty for me and the missus to share. Sorry for the picture. I forgot to snap it before I dug in.
Now came the hard part. Getting a meal without meat. This was the most difficult choice in my life in some time. I mean heck, first up my wife usually makes my food choices and she knows I like my meat. This body was made for meat! Second up, I don’t do much cooking so I kind of had to cheat and go out since I was challenged with this Shopping Around the World. I thought hard about what to order as a meatless entree. I think I nailed it.
May I introduce you to a large wheat dough Mellow Mushroom pie with an olive oil and garlic base (extra garlic please), fresh mozzarella cheese and black olives – no meats. Doesn’t that look awesome. I also sprinkled it with red pepper flakes. The pizza cost $16.96. And here’s the kicker. Me and the wife like to call this kind of meal, a meal that keeps on giving. There is enough pizza to last a couple of more nights – Deal of the Day, right?
So for a total of $25.00 (including a tip), we have a meatless dinner that lasts three nights for two peeps. So that’s what, $4.17 a person? Not bad for a dude huh? So I hope I pulled off Shopping Around the World this month.
Thanks again to cousins Teddy and Angel Sammy for hosting this month. Sending you much love from the Hotel Thompson ❤

My friend Fozzie and I have scheduled a group posting today of Shopping Around the World. We thought it would be interesting to see the differences between different countries all over. Here are our prices for the following from our area – Georgia USA.
Items to price this month:
- Milk. Mom usually buys 1/2 gallon store brand which lately has been on sale for $1.00
- Tomatoes. Mom loves Roma tomatoes. They are small but meaty. She bought some for the dinner at $1.29 a pound – that was about 4 tomatoes.
- Canned Product. Black beans. How could you possibly go wrong with black beans – especially when you can buy store brand for a $1.00 a can. Mom bought two cans for the meal.
- Homemade Dish. Jalapeno Cornbread with Black Beans 🙂 yum – see below
- Random Item of your choice. Jalapeno. Mom bought one very large one and it only cost $0.69 the day she was at the market.
Okay my friends. Mommy went easy – really easy on this month’s Shopping Around the World – go mom! She was able to combine all of her prices and items into the Homemade Dish – which is one of our favorites here at the Hotel Thompson.
Jalapeno Cornbread made with with a diced up Jalapeno (according to taste how much you throw in), cup of milk, 1 egg, 2 tablespoons of melted butter, 1 cup of cornmeal and shredded cheddar cheese. We have a small iron skillet that will serve four slices of cornbread. Mix ingredients, except for shredded cheddar cheese, and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. When done turn over skillet onto a plate and top with shredded cheddar cheese.

Black Beans with tomatoes, diced Jalapeno’s and diced red onions. So easy here – snorts. Open store bought black beans and heat over the stove on medium heat. Add a little chicken broth (or whatever broth you have on hand), diced Jalapenos (to taste for heat) and diced tomatoes. When bubbles, turn down to low and stir.
When bread is ready, spoon black beans into bowl and top with more diced tomatoes. Mom even added some cilantro into the mix this date. A meal made for a king and queen. Filling and hot for a cold rainy night that we seem to be having a LOT of lately. Happy eats my friends.
Oh… and this entire meal when you break it down ends up to be around less than $6.00 for two people.
I hope you had fun my friends with this month’s edition of Shopping Around the World. Hope to see you shopping soon!

My friend Fozzie and I have scheduled a group posting today of Shopping Around the World. We thought it would be interesting to see the differences between different countries all over. Here are our prices for the following from our area – Georgia USA.
This month we are working RANDOM CHOICES of the items mentioned. List what is your favorite of the random item and price. Let’s see how many things we can recognize in *your* area.
Items to price this month:
- Random condiment of your choice. Friends – I’m shaking my little piggy head here on this one. Why do you ask? Well, I stumbled into the kitchen – the land of the unknown to this oinker – and looked in the cabinet. What I found was shocking and took me back a bit. You see one of dad’s favorite condiments is… well… perhaps I should show you. See, this brings many questions to this pork butt’s mind. Exactly where and what does he season with this item I’m not sure. But it’s one of his favorites and he says it costs around $3.49 a bottle. I think that’s kind of cheap for butt kickin’ – just saying.
.

- Random frozen meal of your choice. This one is SO easy. In our freezer here at the Hotel Thompson, you will *always* find a Hungry Man television dinner. Chicken is mom’s favorite and turkey is dad’s. Do you remember these dinners? Mom can usually find them on sale at our local Kroger for $2.00 each. Not bad for a complete dinner with dessert, huh? Yeah, mom knows they are full of bad stuff and carbs but every once in a while, it takes her back to her childhood and fond memories. And I’ve heard the brownie desserts in the chicken ones are delicious. Not that mom has shared with me but I hear her squeals of delight when she eats them.
..
- Random dessert/something sweet of your choice. Four words for you. Edwards Peanut Butter Pie. They cost $6.99 in the store and are worth every.single.bite. So says mom and dad. Again, I haven’t had a taste. A single morsel. Nothing. Not even a crumb. Do you see a pattern of abuse here at the Hotel Thompson? Snorts and oinks.
.
- Random Fruit of your choice. Okay I got this one mom. Our random fruit choice *has* to be apples. I don’t care what kind, what size, what color. I’m not discriminating. I LOVE them all. On a good day at the market, mom pays about $1.29 pound. Sometimes in the summer/fall, she can get them a lot cheaper. Which is good because I can put the apples away.
- .Random Item of your choice. One of the things that mom likes to
put in her salads and on her sandwiches is avocados. Neat huh? This week they are on special at the market for only 99 cents each. This is great – have you ever had slices of avocados in your salad and on your sammies? Awesome nice touch. Snorts – I have had these lovely things – licks piggy lips.

My friend Fozzie and I have scheduled a group posting today of Shopping Around the World. We thought it would be interesting to see the differences between different countries all over. Here are our prices for the following from our area – Georgia USA:
Items to price this month:
- Olives – Mom ❤ her olives. Sometimes during the day, she just eats them straight out of a jar. And she likes to put them in her Bloody Mary’s. She buys the huge jar – 21 ounces – of pimento stuffed olives from Walmart, it’s called Manzanilla, for around $4.00 a jar.
- Light Bulbs – Light bulbs are so expensive these days! It seems like we are forever replacing the ones in the kitchen. We have two light fixtures in the kitchen that have three lights each. They take 65 watts and they are made kind of like a flood light. She can buy a three pack at Home Depot for $19.99 – expensive huh?
- Air Spray – Mom keeps a bottle of Lysol in my room – shrugs shoulders – I don’t know why. But she says that little can is almost $5.00 on sale! Throughout the house, she likes to use Febreze. She can usually get two bottles for $5.00 on those.
- Lettuce – How much is a head of lettuce? Here in the market on sale, we can buy a head of lettuce for 99 cents. If we are lucky, sometimes they are HUGE.
- Random Item of your choice. My random choice is bananas. Mom can usually get them in the store for around 79 cents a pound. Why can’t they be cheaper? I *need* my bananas. They are one of my all time favorite snacks.
Hope you had fun!!

I so couldn’t help blogging these cat finds. I read them and they so reminded me of my play things – the purr creations. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen them play with a simple box for HOURS! Did you hear me correctly – HOURS! And then they fight over who is going to play with it the most and sleep in it! It doesn’t matter if mom or dad buys them the most expensive toy, they would rather play with the empty box. It amazes me. Of course, these two purr things in my house have also been known to chase their tails like dogs. Now, that is a sight worth watching. Mom should put them on YouTube for your amusement. I’m nothing compared to that kind of comedy.
AND if you have a purr thing or are a purr thing, have you ever given them a green olive? Mom gives them to our purr things and its like they are drug enhanced with that thing. They roll all over the floor purring and groaning. I don’t get it. I’ve had an olive. It didn’t do that to me. You?
