National Potato Chip Day

March 14, 2013 is NATIONAL POTATO CHIP DAY. National Potato Chip Day celebrates the ever popular snack food potato chips. It’s a convenient snack food or a side dish to a sandwich at lunch or dinner. They come in different flavors ranging from plain to barbeque to sour cream and onion. There’s such a wide range! They come regular, crinkled, in sticks, in a bag or in a can. You can buy them in the stores or you can make your own with fresh potatoes.

Did you know that potato chips were first made by Chef George Crum in Saratoga Springs, New York on August 24, 1953. Story goes that the Chef was agitated by a patron who repeatedly kept sending his fried potatoes back because they were too soggy and bland. The Chef decided to slice the potatoes as thin as possible, fry them until they were crisp and season them with extra salt. Contrary to the Chef’s expectation, the patron loved them! They soon became a regular item called Saratoga Chips on the menu at the restaurant. Americans have been in love with them ever since!

And, did you know that pig Bacon absolutely LOVES potato chips? Excuse Bacon’s dad for his lack of clothing – HA! and concentrate on that little deviled ham begging for more chips. I like to hear the little fellow crunching them. Enjoy – roll tape –

Patriot Day – In Memory

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 13 years but we will never forget.

No one will ever be the same after this date.

Life changed.  Families changed.  Times changed.

Let us not just think of the United States on this date.  Of the 2,977 victims that lost their lives on this sad day, 373 of them were foreign nationals that worked at the World Trade Center in different offices.

This date touched the world.  The day might have darkened 09/11 but not destroyed us.  We as in the world came out stronger.  We as in the world came out more united.  We as in the world came out.

In memory of all of the victims that lost their lives on this sad day, you will never be forgotten.  You live on in our lives and always will.

Stay strong my friends.  Stay united!

Oh No You Don’t Daddy!

20140702-105046-39046719.jpgSo early last week, mom and dad went to bed, turned on their television to watch the news and got all comfortable.  Hemi, as you can see in this picture, likes to sit front and center and swat at the news people.  See, it’s not just me that purr thing swats – snorts.  Mom sets the timer on the television and those humans of mine usually drift off to sleep land express before the television turns off.  But the other night, the television went off early.  Mom assumed that since Hemi was near the remote control, he probably hit the button and turned it off.  No problems.

So mom gets up the next morning to watch the news while getting ready for the worky place and guess what?  The flat screen won’t come on.  What?  That’s not good.  So my mom, who is NOT electronically inclined might I add, checks everything – all plugs, resets the television and hits the button again.  Nothing.  Now she fusses a bit and I’m sitting on the bed watching her.  Daddy wakes up from his slumber like a bear waking up from hibernation and asks whats going on and why am I on his bed.  I gave him a stink eye look just like mommy did – snorts.

Mom explains to him what happened.  Then daddy did something so stupid that I started snorting almost rolling off the bed.  He asks mommy, “Did you check the plug in?”  Pardon me dad, let me help you put that size 10 foot right into your mouth because mom is going to get you so good.  And trust me, putting your foot into your own mouth is NOT going to be as easy as you were a child.  Nope.  Not at all.  Trust me on that one.

After mom so politely told him where to shove his comment, mom told him she had checked all of the plugs.  She might have put in a “DOH” somewhere in there but I don’t think he heard her – snorts.  Then dad said the most outrageous thing.  He said, “Well, I guess it’s broken then.”  WOW daddy, you think?  Rolls piggy eyes.

And then when you thought that daddy couldn’t say anything more incredibly stupid, he did.  He said, “Well I guess we will have to take Bacon’s flat screen from his bedroom”.  Whatchu talking about daddy?!  I don’t think so.  You can back away from my flat screen this minute.  Nope. Not going to happen.  Not in a New York piggy minute.  That’s my television.  I jumped up on the bed and got in my fierce mowhawk stance and gave him the best stink eye look I could muster.

Mommy looked at me.  I looked at mommy.  Daddy looked at me.  I looked at daddy.  Then mommy looked at daddy and said, “If you are brave enough to take Bacon’s television, you go right ahead”.  Then there was silence while daddy was thinking.  I know he was thinking.  I could see smoke coming out of his ears – snorts.  I know he was calculating how he could do it without me getting him.  Don’t let this cute adorable face fool you.  I can protect what’s mine – like my television.  Okay.  I might have squealed a little too to enforce I meant business.

Dad finally said, “I think we have another one in the work out room, don’t we?”  That’s right daddy.  Ninja Pig Bacon wins.  You move right along to the work out room and get that television.

Pardon me now my friends.  Green Acres is playing on my television in my bedroom.  I need to go watch it.  Did I mention it was my television?  Snorts.

Hot Dog Eating Contest – YAY!

What better way to celebrate a holiday then to have an awesome eating competition.  I saw the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest last year on television and have been pigstruck every since.  I live for this competition!  Every year, this competition is held on Coney Island in Brookyln, New York on July 4th.  And, what better month to celebrate but in July when it is National Hot Dog month.  I would just *love* to be there to watch in person… and maybe compete.

Twenty competitors stand behind a 30 foot long table and chow down against each other.  They have a short ten minutes (which I’m sure seems like forever to them!) to eat as many hot dogs and buns as they possibly can.  A designated score keeper stands behind each competitor and keeps up with how many hot dogs/buns each person is eating by holding up a sign for each person showing the number of dogs consumed.

Over the past several years, Joey Chestnut has won for the United States.  Last year, he ate a total of 69 hot dogs/buns.  The year before in 2012, he ate a total of 68 hot dogs/buns.

And, did you know that women are also in this competition?  Over the past several years, Sonya Thomas – AKA Black Widow – has also won for the United States.  Last year, she ate a total of 36 3/4 quarters of  hot dogs/buns.  The year before in 2012, she ate a total of 45 hot dogs/buns.

Here’s a picture of both of them –

Now I understand that competitor eaters are trained. But I have to tell you, I’m a natural born competitor eater.  Look at this body – I am *made* for this competition… of course with beef hot dogs.  I bet you I could do a big hurt on some of those dogs and at least tie Joey Chestnut.

I may have to venture outside into nature in the backyard when mom/dad grill our hot dogs this afternoon.  You know, just to see if any of them just ‘happen’ to fall off the grill.  Perhaps I can start my very own neighborhood eating competition for my four legged friends.  Who’s in with me?

XOXO – Bacon

Earth Day

20140222-190037.jpg

Keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –

.

April 22nd is EARTH DAY.  Every year, more than 1 billion people in 175 countries will participate in various Earth Day events on this date.  It is the largest civic observance in the world.  The purpose is to raise awareness about important environmental issues.

The first Earth Day took place in 1970.  After witnessing the affects of an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, US Senator Gaylord Nelson organized a grassroots environmental teach in on college campuses across the country.  Many people believe that this first Earth Day celebration marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement.

Celebrate today – plant a tree, help clean up a beach or park and/or participate in an event near you.  Help to keep this world a better place for everyone!

And a little blast from the past you might remember that deals with Earth Day – Captain Planet and the Planeteers.  Do you remember this show?  It was an American animated environmental program created by Ted Turner, Robert Larkin III and Barbara Pyle.  It came out on September 15, 1990.

The basis of the program was set with Gaia – the spirit of the planet.  She is awakened by drilling which is above her resting chamber.  To control the damage, she sends out five magic rings to youths around the world who will become the Planeteers.

Kwame is from Africa and has the power of Earth with his ring.

Wheeler is from North America and has the power of Fire with his ring.

Linka is from the Soviet Union and has the power of Wind with her ring.

Gi is from Asia and has the power of Water with her ring.

Ma-Ti is from South America and has the power of Heart and telepathy with his ring.

All five can use their rings special powers to call the super hero – Captain Planet for help.

I think today would be the perfect day to check out this old classic of helping the environment!

A New Show I’m Watching

So, I’ve started watching this new series on television.  It comes on the Fox channel at 9:00PM on Monday nights.  It’s called… are you ready?  Sleepy Hollow – insert spooky music here.

This past Monday was the first episode.  If you loved the original Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, you will probably love this as well.  This new series is like a modern day version of the fairy tale fantasy.  I had doubts before watching the show but after the first episode – I’m hooked – hooves and all!

This new show has everything – suspense, drama, witchcraft, adventure, thriller and a headless horseman.  Who could ask for anything more?

The show, of course, revolves around a resurrected Headless Horseman, Ichabod Crane and Lieutenant Abbie Mills in 2013 Sleepy Hollow, New York.

As Ichabod Crane, can you imagine waking up to the 21st century when all you remember is 18th century Colonial America?  Technology alone mystifies poor Crane.  There is even some humor in these clips, especially when he gets in a car and starts playing with the windows – up/down/down/up – too funny.

If you get a chance, you must check out this show and see what you think.  We at the Hotel Thompson are hooked on the first episode.  I did hear on the television this morning that there will be some reshows of the pilot tonight.  Check your television guides.

The second episode titled Blood Moon will be on September 23, 2013 at 9:00PM.

Of course, this little piggy has his thoughts on who in the show is bad and who is good already.  I can’t wait to watch future shows to see if I’m right.  Please let me know what you think.  XOXO – Bacon
