April 22nd is EARTH DAY. Every year, more than 1 billion people in 175 countries will participate in various Earth Day events on this date. It is the largest civic observance in the world. The purpose is to raise awareness about important environmental issues.
The first Earth Day took place in 1970. After witnessing the affects of an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, US Senator Gaylord Nelson organized a grassroots environmental teach in on college campuses across the country. Many people believe that this first Earth Day celebration marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement.
Celebrate today – plant a tree, help clean up a beach or park and/or participate in an event near you. Help to keep this world a better place for everyone!
And a little blast from the past you might remember that deals with Earth Day – Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Do you remember this show? It was an American animated environmental program created by Ted Turner, Robert Larkin III and Barbara Pyle. It came out on September 15, 1990.
The basis of the program was set with Gaia – the spirit of the planet. She is awakened by drilling which is above her resting chamber. To control the damage, she sends out five magic rings to youths around the world who will become the Planeteers.
Kwame is from Africa and has the power of Earth with his ring.
Wheeler is from North America and has the power of Fire with his ring.
Linka is from the Soviet Union and has the power of Wind with her ring.
Gi is from Asia and has the power of Water with her ring.
Ma-Ti is from South America and has the power of Heart and telepathy with his ring.
All five can use their rings special powers to call the super hero – Captain Planet for help.
I think today would be the perfect day to check out this old classic of helping the environment!
Dear Bacon – This is called *the* look. You know the one that your parents do between themselves when they get all gooey eyed with each other. I wanted to send it to you so you can practice. Cause you know love day is coming and you need to market this look to get a date for Valentine’s. I know you have it in you. Who could ever resist that little pot belly of yours. Practice – practice and more practice my friend. You’re welcomed. Signed Stud
❤
Dear Stud – OMP. Thanks my friend!! I am so going to start practicing this look and marketing it. I need all of the help I can get with the ladies. And thank you for calling my pot belly little. I appreciate that so very much buddy! I just knew that this pot belly would come in handy one day. Look at dad. He has one and he got lucky with mom! Snorts and rolls with piggy laughter.
Dear Bacon – I double pig bet you that you can’t do this. In fact, I just *know* you can’t. See sometimes I try to mess with my humans and stand on my back paws. Meows. It keeps them guessing what I will do next. I just want to see them doing this too. Signed Twinkle Toes
❤
Dear Twinkle Toes – That is a given talent my sweet dear friend. There is no way this little piglet could do that for sure. Heck with this pot belly, I can barely see my back feet.
Dear Bacon – Wassup!?! Never fear if you see me hanging under your fence. Just wanted to see wassup and whatcha parents cooking on that grill. It smells good from here. Can I have a bite or dozen? Signed Voyeur
❤
Dear Voyeur – Hilarious bro! I love the way you think of hanging out to see what’s going on in the hood. Pop over anytime…. or should I say pop under? Snorts and rolls with piggy laughter. And hey, mom/dad were grilling hamburgers on the grill. If one falls, it’s free game to us anipals. Come on over. I’ll share.
Dear Bacon – Come on dude. Let’s “fly” some air outside and do some jumps. It’s a happening thing and you will love the air in your hair… or wings. I’ve heard some oinkers have wings. Call me and we will have a skate date. Signed Hawk Fly
❤
Dear Hawk Fly – Dude, I think it would be fly to soar through the air weighless. I just don’t think (A) there’s a skateboard big enough for my pot belly and (B) my pot belly could ever take flight unless someone shoved me off of a cliff or the top of the house. On second thought, forget I said that. Dad might read it and get ideas. Have fun Hawk Fly!
Dear Bacon – The New York City subway is a strict bus service. Dogs can’t walk on buses. They have to be carried, in strollers, etc. My human created me a good one – a skateboard. Hey, I put on a hat and headset and nobody even knows I’m a pooch. Really! And hey, we are not breaking any rules whatsoever. So go us, right? Signed Disguised Celebrity
❤
Dear Disguised Celebrity – My friend, do I have someone you need to get in touch with! See Hawk Fly above. Ya’ll could fly around the bus services like you wouldn’t believe together. Just think of the possibilities of fun! Just remember – safety first!

March 14th is NATIONAL POTATO CHIP DAY. National Potato Chip Day celebrates the ever popular snack food potato chips. It’s a convenient snack food or a side dish to a sandwich at lunch or dinner. They come in different flavors ranging from plain to barbeque to sour cream and onion. There’s such a wide range! They come regular, crinkled, in sticks, in a bag or in a can. You can buy them in the stores or you can make your own with fresh potatoes.
Did you know that potato chips were first made by Chef George Crum in Saratoga Springs, New York on August 24, 1953. Story goes that the Chef was agitated by a patron who repeatedly kept sending his fried potatoes back because they were too soggy and bland. The Chef decided to slice the potatoes as thin as possible, fry them until they were crisp and season them with extra salt. Contrary to the Chef’s expectation, the patron loved them! They soon became a regular item called Saratoga Chips on the menu at the restaurant. Americans have been in love with them ever since!
And, did you know that pig Bacon absolutely LOVES potato chips? Excuse Bacon’s dad for his lack of clothing – HA! and concentrate on that little deviled ham begging for more chips. I like to hear the little fellow crunching them. This video was taken several years back and is one of our favorites here at the Hotel Thompson. Enjoy – roll tape –
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years but we will never forget.
No one will ever be the same after this date.
Life changed. Families changed. Times changed.
Let us not just think of the United States on this date. Of the 2,977 victims that lost their lives on this sad day, 373 of them were foreign nationals that worked at the World Trade Center in different offices.
This date touched the world. The day might have darkened 09/11 but not destroyed us. We as in the world came out stronger. We as in the world came out more united. We as in the world came out.
In memory of all of the victims that lost their lives on this sad day, you will never be forgotten. You live on in our lives and always will.

Happy Popcorn Lover’s Day! Today is a great day – many of us love popcorn. Today is the day to pop yourself some – maybe even share it with a friend. When eaten just plain (like Bacon likes it), it can be good for you. It’s all the extras that the humans like to add to it like buttery, salt, maybe some pepper flakes, cheddar cheese, or barbeque flakes. Do you add anything to your corn?
.How do your humans make popcorn? In the microwave, over the oven the old fashioned way or do they have a ‘popcorn maker’? However they make it, tell them to make extra to share with you. I know Bacon will have his share today.
And do you know the origin of Popcorn Lover’s Day? This day was created on January 6, 2012 by Bob Matthews of Rochester, New York. It was he and his wife’s favorite snack and they have it on most Thursdays. Thus, Popcorn Lover’s Day is celebrated always on the second Thursday of March.
