National Animal Cracker Day!

April 18th. is National Animal Cracker Day.  Isn’t this fantastic!!  Elephants, lions, tigers, bears and monkeys oh my.  These are small little sweet cookies shaped like zoo animals.  They were first brought to the United States during the 1800’s.  The demand for these wonderful little cookies skyrocketed and demand was over the roof!

Stauffer’s Biscuit Company was the first company to produce animal crackers in 1871 in York, Pennsylvania.  Other local bakeries came together under the National Biscuit Company or “Nabisco Brands”.  In 1902, the famous Barnum’s Animals circus theme box came out.  Bacon’s mom says that she remembers her parents bringing her these little boxes as a treat.

Did you know that since their start in 1903, there have been 37 different animals included in the Barnum’s Animal Crackers?  Today, more than 40 million packages of animal crackers are sold each year around the world.

I think Bacon does his share in the intake!  They are one of his biggest treats that his mom has to get him in the economy size!  I can’t tell you how many of these huge buckets that he has gone through in his day.  In fact, this one is what the Easter bunny brought him and it’s almost gone.  Time to reload.

So on this National Animal Cracker Day – enjoy a box OR TWO of these sweet delectable bits.  Just remember though, if you are going to eat in front of the pig, you have to share!

Bringing Easy Home

Easy was my brother from a different mother.  When I started blogging years ago, Easy was one of the first anipals I met.  He was always there with a quick bark or comforting paw.  His stories were awesome and we especially loved those about a certain little Whiskey in his hood – hilarious!  Above is one of my favorite pictures of brother Easy.  I think we all think about 2016 the same way!

National Pet Memorial Day

Today, September 11th, is National Pet Memorial Day.  National Pet Memorial Day is always the second  Sunday in September.  I think it’s a fabulous day.  This day is an opportunity to remember the pets that have passed away but that are *never* forgotten.  These pets have touched our hearts, brightened our lives, comforted us and now are over the Rainbow Bridge.  They are still in our hearts and always will be.  Today, let us remember them and fall in love with them all over again.

Those that have passed the Rainbow Bridge will *always* hold a special place in your heart.  This year we lost our sweet Mouse Girl.  Although she is no longer physically with us, she is still here watching over us.  We feel her here and daily we think about her and how she touched all of our lives.

Wags and Waves for Forrest Day

Welcome my friends to Wags and Waves for Forrest Day!  This day was put together by our Auntie Sharon of Gentle Stitches.  It’s a day created to help our friends Fozzie and her family at All Fur One and One Fur All  in the loss of their anipal Forrest (06/06/2003 – 04/27/2016) who is now an angel watching over all of us here.

Today, we are wagging and waving our tails as a tribute to a great guy in support of his family who is going through a rough time – as you can imagine.

Bacon’s Show and Tell

 WELCOME

Hello Friends – Wasn’t last month Bacon’s Show and Tell full of fun and misadventure – snorts with piggy laughter.  I think it was a snort of a great time – especially seeing my daddy taking a potty break.  I mean heck, he’s caught me in film in plenty of embarrassing moments.

I think that since last month was a hoot with all of you too, let’s do a repeat.  Find another embarrassing picture or story of your humans and share with us on

This month the story is about mom and dad.  Hold on my friends – it’s hilarious.

You see mom and dad dated for a long time before they got married.  We all know that.  But this story happens when mom had been together say about five years.  Daddy’s mom/dad took mom/dad out to lunch one weekend.  So there they were at a local Bennigan’s.  They had finished dinner and was fixing to order a dessert.

Bennigan’s at the time had this dessert called Death by Chocolate.  Something so delicious looking – full of frozen ice cream and chocolate and whip cream.  Now as kids would do when they are dating, mom/dad were making goo-goo eyes at each other and flirting.  That’s all they did during their courtship days – rolls piggy eyes.  Out of the blue, dad says to mom, “That whip cream sure would look good on your nipples.”

What in the h-e-hockey sticks did he just say in front of God and everyone?!  I’m telling you my friends.  A mouse could have farted from the kitchen and you would have heard it from the silence that overcame at the table.  Bless mom’s heart because she wanted to be beamed up by Scotty right there.  Dad turned fifty shades of red when he realized that he said that out loud.  And poor dad’s mom/dad – they had to whip their tongues back into their mouths over their son’s sudden lack of judgment.

Of course, there was some explaining to do and years later we can all laugh about it now… somewhat.

Bacon’s Show and Tell

For Bacon’s Show and Tell for March we are focusing on another great toy you had from childhood.  Mom and dad both had this toy.  They played with it for hours – you could mess things up, redo the picture, write stuff and draw beautiful pictures… if you were talented – snorts.  What was this awesome toy you are asking.

 An Etch-A-Sketch.  Do you remember them now?  Oh my pigs.  Mommy got a dreamy look on her face as she reminisced about her memories.  One of her favorite things was going line by line only moving inches at a time to the left to make the entire screen blacked out.  What a thrill that was when you couldn’t see any part of the screen – snorts – mom was so easily amused for sure.  She said that hers got broken because one of her brothers stepped on the glass part.  Another toy that had a brief life expectancy but was fun while she had it.

Dad remembers playing with his as well.  He had more talent… I guess you could call it that… and he would draw on his.  Now, I’m not saying that you would recognize the pictures – snorts – but he would attempt at it.  And then write messages on it and erase them to keep them secret.  He doesn’t remember what happened to his childhood inspiration.  It’s probably a good thing.

Can’t wait to visit other blogs and see what they had as one of their cherished toys from childhood.  Hope you had fun this month my friends!

 

Valentine’s Day Aftermath – a Note From My Daddy

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend with Valentine’s Day.  This afternoon I want to talk about great times with the big day of LOVE.  Think over the years – or if it was this past weekend – to your most memorable Valentine’s day.  What happened?  Today is the day to share and tell me about it.

I asked my mom and dad the same question.  They reminisced about all of the happy Valentine’s Days they have had.  There were many, MANY to pick from but mom and dad picked one that really meant a lot to them both.

They said years and years ago in a time way before they were married and they were still dating.  Daddy was working at the hospital on night shift 3pm-11pm.  Mommy was working for the school system 7am-3pm.  So during the week, they pretty much didn’t see each other physically although they did talk to each other a couple of times during the day.  And remember this was way before the cell phone era – snorts.  (I tell you my humans are older than dirt.)

So Valentine’s day fell on a Wednesday this one year and both were working.  They just knew they were not going to see each other at all.  But daddy – he is a romantic at heart that you wouldn’t believe.  He went by mom’s apartment before she went to work and put a GIANT Scooby Doo stuffed animal in the passenger seat of her car and left.  When mom came down to get in her car, (after she almost had a heart attack because she thought someone was sitting in her car) she oohhed and aawwed.  She got in the car and Scooby Doo was holding a giant heart box.  She opened the giant heart box and there was a card from daddy telling her sweet nothings, chocolate and a jewelry box.  She opened the jewelry box and it had one of the most beautiful jade necklaces that she had ever seen.  Of course she cried.  And then cried some more.  And then cried more and went to school wear she wore the beautiful jade necklace all day.

She had called daddy went she got to work and she made plans to see him at his job later that day for when he went to dinner.  So that night rolled around and mom met dad at the hospital.  Dad told mom he was taking her to a fast food restaurant called Arby’s.  Not a place they went to regularly but dad was insistent.  What she didn’t know was that dad had received information about something special Arby’s was doing that night.  That night just for Valentine’s Day, they had brought in a baby grand piano and hired a guy to play and give out roses to the patrons.  Mom cried again and said it was so romantic and thoughtful.

So there you go my friends, that’s ONE of mom and dad’s most memorable Valentine’s Day.  Now is the time for you to share one of yours – go.

UPDATE A NOTE FROM MY DADDY –

Hi everyone – Bacon’s dad here.  We would have loved to have said that this past weekend was the most memorable Valentine’s day for me and my bride.  And in a way, I guess it was.  Bacon’s mom has been fighting this awful cough since December.  The kind of cough that just makes you choke, can’t catch your breathe and she has even passed out from it once.  She went to the hospital in December and they gave her a bunch of medicines and sent her home.

Sunday morning when I got up, she told me she needed to go back to the emergency room. (And being a Sunday, we are very fortunate that the insurance we have has a built in ‘hospital emergency room’ right in the building.)  She was having difficulties in breathing.  We immediately went.  Once there, she got X-rays (we were totally afraid that she had gotten pneumonia) and they came back clear.  She had a breathing treatment and afterwards they put her on a fluid IV and gave her steroids directly in her IV.  They also drew a bunch of blood.  She started feeling a little bit better and didn’t cough for almost 20 minutes.  This was such fantastic news to us after she had been continuously coughing for what seemed like forever.  She got to come home after about 7 hours in the ER being looked at.  She started bruising up last night from the IV’s and where the blood pressure cuff kept coming on so often.  She looks black, blue, yellow and very sore.

Her blood work came back and lot of her numbers were low – iron, potassium, red blood count.  They gave her a bunch of medicines to get filled and start taking which she has.  She still had a really rough night last night sleeping.  Night time is the worse time for her to rest.  We are all taking care of her here at the Hotel Thompson.  I will be helping out Bacon in the next couple of days to get caught up on his blog visits.  So please don’t think we have forgotten about you – we definitely have not.
