Travels in the South

Oh my friends.  Is it hot enough for you outside?  It’s so blistery hot that you just can’t do anything.  It’s all mom can do sometimes just to waddle to the mailbox and back.  Yes, it’s that hot here in the south.  In fact, it’s so hot here that I saw a yellow jacket taking off his jacket due to the heat.  It’s so hot that when mom buys bread at the grocery toast, by the time she gets it home it’s toast.  The chickens are laying hard boiled eggs.  The cows are giving evaporated milk.  Okay I’ll stop.  you get it.  It’s H.O.T.

Well with everyone having such a heat wave, I thought I would share a picture of you that mom took last Christmas.  Her and dad went and stayed in a cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains.  They arrived one night and it was cold – shivers.  They woke up the next morning to a blanket of white.  Now doesn’t that feel cooling?  Close your eyes and think of it with me.  Better?

Travels in the South

Hello my friends.  Today we are continuing our travels in the south with the visit from our friends Shoko and Kali’s mom/dad from Canadian Cats.  Last week we found Bill and Jean arriving here in the south – you can read all about that posting here.

On their second day here in the south, mom/dad wanted to take them downtown to a restaurant that is one of their all time favorites.  This restaurant is called Fogo de Chao and it’s a Brazilian restaurant.  This is an upscale all you can eat restaurant where they carve meat at your table side.  Mom had been talking to Bill and Jean about this place but regardless of how you describe it, you just don’t get the full experience of it until you are actually there in this beautiful place.

The first thing we need to discuss about the restaurant’s food are these devilish little rolls called PÃO DE QUEIJO.  Oh my southern heavens.  These things are totally awesome – they are warm, soft cheesy bread rolls that mysteriously come to your table throughout your entire meal in bowls.  It’s like the bowl just refills itself over and over and before you know it – three bowls are gone… not that mom would know from experience or anything like that.

The second thing we need to talk about at the restaurant is their HUGE market table salad bar.  This is a picture of Jean’s plate from the salad bar – look at all of the goodies!  Huge green olives, beef steak tomatoes, cucumber salads, imported cheeses, prosciutto, kale, chick peas, artichoke hearts, apple salad – that’s just a start of the goodies.

And just think – this is *just* the salad bar to get your appetite going a bit.  Doesn’t all of the food luck superb?  We all dug in like there was no tomorrow and Lord forbid like we didn’t eat just last night.

Then when you are ready for the real party to begin, you turn this disc over to green on your table.  That tells the gaucho’s that you are ready for MEAT. And then when you want a break you turn your disc back over which is RED for stop I need a break.  So are you ready for some meat my friends?  This is where they bring the spears of meat to your table and carve what you want.  They have top sirloin, bottom sirloin, filet mignon, beef ribs, pork ribs, chicken, lamb and pork.

Here’s a picture of daddy getting some house special.  See how they carve it at the table.  Then you have a special tong that you pull the meat off after the gaucho cuts the meat.  It is delicious.  And you can get whatever temperature you want – medium, well done, rare, whatever – they are there for you and your experience.

In fact, mommy kept telling the house special guy that he was her favorite.  What a suck up huh?

We all ate and ate and ate until our bellies were nice, round and full – overflowing with food and laughter.

Finally the discs were turned to red, the white napkins were waved in defeat.

All of us could barely move… so why not order dessert then huh?  Snorts with piggy laughter.

There was the matter of celebrating a late birthday in the crowd – Jean.  So we all choose strawberry cheesecake where the restaurant wrote around the plate Happy Birthday.  And Jean was a trooper blowing out her candle and we all jumped in one last time before ending another great meal with great company.

And you know there has to be that *one* picture that is taken to always look back on to remember what a great date this was.. and here it is.

Dear Bacon

20140330-184102.jpgDear Bacon,

If it’s good enough to put the crying thing in to settle them down, why can’t I get in it too?  It seems like the screaming miniature human gets a lot of attention in this contraption.  I don’t seem to be getting the same kind.  Why?  Can you explain that to me?  Signed Dogsad

Dear Dogsad,

Aaww – you poor thing.  I’m really sorry that you feel left out.  I really am.  Right now though, your humans are going through a lot with the small human.  This will pass when they don’t have to be so fussy with them.  You just be patient and stay cute my friend.

.

20140330-184112.jpg

 Dear Bacon,

This means WAR!  There I was hanging out on the sofa after a really rough day of chasing the mailman and squirrels.  I was minding my own business, had my feet popped up and was enjoying a nice glass of 2012 Francis Ford Coppola Pinot Noir.  Then the lights started flashing.  My dad took this picture of me and put it all over the internet – he’s even talking about Christmas cards?!  I will be ruined!  What can I do?  Signed Sparky

Dear Sparky,

Give me a second friend… snorts and squeals ridiculously loud in a paper bag.  Okay, I’m back.  Breathes in to get my bearing.  What you need to do Sparky is get a hold of that camera.  Delete the picture is tops.  Then you need to get on the human’s computer and start deleting.  I would wait until the humans all asleep and then pounce into action.

.

20140330-184124.jpgDear Bacon,

If you’re happy and you know it, throw your hooves in the air.  If you’re happy and you know it, look so cute.  If you’re happy and you know it then your face will surely show it.  If you’re happy and you know it, throw your hooves in the air!  Signed Cute as a Lamb

Dear Cute as a Lamb,

I’m off now to throw my hooves up in the air!  You look as adorable as well me!  Have a great one my friend and thanks for sharing!

.

20140330-184139.jpgDear Bacon,

When the humans asked me if I wanted a pancake and I said yes, this is not what I meant.  I wanted a pancake to eat not wear.  What in the world were they thinking?!  Signed Panbunny

Dear Panbunny,

I could teach you a trick with that pancake sitting on your head my friend.  My daddy taught me how to flip it off of my head and into my mouth.  You can do it – I know you can!  Happy eats.

.

20140330-184148.jpgDear Bacon,

SQUEAL!  Look what I made!  Mini-me’s!  Aren’t they just too cute?!  Signed Surprised

Dear Surprised,

They are totally adorable my friend!!  So very cute.  They look just like you… well except for the bright eyed, bushy tailed, surprise look – snorts.

Happy Monday My Friends!

Hope everyone had an pigawesome weekend.  There was finally some cooler weather here in Georgia.  Have I told you that I absolutely LOVE me some cooler weather?  I can’t stand the heat from the summer.  Now that it’s Autumn, there’s just a tad bit of coolness out there.  It’s great!  I take after mommy in that aspect.  She loves the cooler weather *almost* as much as me.

So this past weekend, I snuggled a lot.  No news flash there huh?  Snorts.  We watched some football – that I was ready for!  Watching football brings back some fond memories for me.  Daddy has told me stories on how my great, great, great, great, great, great grandpig played in the first games.  He was thrown around a lot but loved his job.  Every since then, my kin folks have played.  Now, I know you probably don’t think so.  You’ll have to think hard on what position my ancestors play.  I don’t care to get that involved in the game.  I’ll just watch from the safety of my couch beside mommy where I’m safe if you know what I mean.

I helped mommy around the house.  Daddy kept singing Mary had a little lamb to us.  I’m not sure why?  But mommy, she would laugh about it so that made me happy.

I tried helping daddy play his Angry Bird game.  I don’t think he appreciated my help in touching the iPad screen with my hooves.  I don’t know if he was worried that I would beat his score or what – snorts.

I even played with the purr things here this weekend.  I was nice … especially since they threw me a surprise birthday party last week.  I let that Hemi crawl all over me.  He even rode my back one time when we were playing chase.  I wish mommy could have gotten a picture of it but that purr rascal is FAST.  He boomeranged off me like I was a balloon animal.

Other than that, we chilled and enjoyed the weather.  You?

Oh, I thought I would throw this funny out to all of my friends on this Monday.  I know mommy enjoyed this picture.  She said it was SO TRUE.  I feel you mommy – can’t wait for you to get back home tonight!

Everyone have a happy Monday!

Mom’s Birthday Lunch – WOW!

Today was a great and wonderful day for mom with her birthday.  Daddy took her to one of their favorite restaurants called Fogo de Chão (pronounced fo-go dèe shoun) for lunch downtown Atlanta, Georgia.  This place is superdelicious even from this oinker’s point of view… not that *I* would know first hand.  For some reason, I don’t think they would be too accommodating for me to walk in and order lunch.  Then again.. they might if *I* was lunch but that’s not going to happen okay! Snorts – I’ll just live vicariously through mom and dad with their fantastic lunch date.

20130612-092604.jpg

When you first get seated at your table, there is this round disc that is next to each plate.  Just like a stop light – flip it to green for “Come on Gauchos bring me some meat” or flip it to red for “Hold back cowboys – I need a moment” – snort.

But, I’m getting way ahead of myself.

20130612-092610.jpg

After you get settled and order your drinks, you can go visit their magnificent salad bar.  And trust me, I say salad bar but mom and dad said it was a culinary experience.  There’s everything on that bar!  Aged parmesan, aged manchego cheese, artichokes, fresh mozzarella, smoked salmon, shiitake mushrooms, all kinds of different breads, potato salad, apple salad, tomato/cucumber salad and huge green and black olives.  Mom said they even had fried bacon strips on the salad bar. I admit that this scared me for just a few minutes and had me shaking in my hooves.  Fried bacon – that would be me?!  But, mom calmed me down and explained that it wasn’t this type of piggy.  You know, the loveable, snuggable, huggable miniature pot bellied pig.  I’m not for eating – just loving 🙂 winks

20130624-135231.jpg

After you get your fill of the ‘salad bar’, the wonderful gauchos will bring some awesome side dishes to your table.  They include crispy polenta, garlic mashed potatoes and caramelized bananas.  They also bring these delectable little cheesy rolls they call pão de queijo to the table in little baskets.  Mom says they are heavenly.  She and dad went through THREE baskets of them.  I was shocked!  But, I told mom that it was her birthday and we *all* know that there are absolutely no calories on one’s birthday, right?!  And I must admit, these rolls are out of this world.  Someone – looking around – brought this oinker back one.  Now I understand why they had three baskets – oohh yummy!

20130624-135236.jpg

Now it’s time to flip that little card to green and bring on the meat!  Gauchos start flocking to your table to carve meat right in front of you.  It’s amazing!  This is daddy getting one of his favorites called Picanha (pronounced pea-CAN-ya).  Picanha is top sirloin, so juicy that it literally almost melts in your mouth!  Daddy says it’s even better when there is a some ‘fat’ on the edges that are caramelized from the heat of cooking over the fire.  They have all kinds of meat that are served.  They are:

  • Filet Mignon which dad says is THUD delicious – either bacon wrapped or without bacon
  • Beef Ancho (pronounced beef AN-cho) which is rib eye
  • Alcatra (pronounced al-CAT-ra) which is top sirloin
  • Fraldinha (pronounced fral-DIN-ya) which is bottom sirloin
  • Cordeiro (pronounced cor-DAY-roo) which is lamb.  You can get lamb chops or leg of lamb  Either way is succulent with a little bit of mint marinade on the side!
  • Frango (pronounced FRAHN-go) which is chicken.  You can get chicken legs or bacon wrapped chicken breasts.
  • Costela de Porco (pronounced co-STELL-a gee PO-co) which is pork ribs.
  • Lombo (pronounced LOM-bo) which is pork loin.  This is encrusted with parmesan cheese coating before roasting over an open flame.
  • Linguica (pronounced lin-GWEE-sa) which is sausage.

20130624-135242.jpg

And mom’s favorite is Costela (pronounced co-STELL-a) which is beef ribs.  Mommy says this gaucho has the hardest job of all of the gauchos at the restaurant.  Not only does he have to carve the meat, he has to hold the cutting board as well.  That is some job – right?!  But mommy says it’s all worth it because the meat just melts in your mouth.  And, she loves the beef ribs with a side of horseradish sauce.  Yummy!

20130624-143101.jpg

And then to top off the meal – they brought mommy birthday flan with happy birthday written on the plate.  So sweet, huh?  Mommy and daddy said it was so great – not too sweet.

So you see, mommy had a terrific birthday lunch.  I’m glad I could share the pictures and fun with you.  Mommy would be for some reason she is sleeping.  She said she ate too much – snorts.  The amateur – double snorts.
