Hello sweet friends – I hope you had a wonderful LONG weekend with Labor Day. Labor Day the unofficial last day of Summer. I only wish it was true in the weather department as well. Because why? Because it’s still hotter than you know what here in the South. Don’t get me wrong. This past weekend was absolutely beautiful – cooler weather, lower humidity and slight winds. It was *almost* like a wonderful fall day. In fact, mom even slipped some Pumpkin Spice coffee in there in places. That just screams fall, right?
Then there was yesterday with daddy. When we have leftover bread – you know when the bread becomes a rock and you can almost kill someone with it – (snorts with piggy laughter) dad will throw it out in the front yard for birds and other night creature anipals to eat. You know they have to eat too. Well yesterday he and mom were fixing to go off so he throws the bread out. That’s when mom says things got out of control. It was like the movie Jurassic Park where all of those little pesky velociraptors came running across the fields at people.
That’s right – Chicken Run was back in the hood. They came running from next door (of course) and tackled the leftover bread like there was no tomorrow. At one point, mom said she counted EIGHT of them. Shakes piggy head. I lost count at two… that is two for a chicken snack on the run – HA! Nah, I couldn’t hurt the chicks. I’ve kind of gotten attached to them. And of course the neighbor stills insists, “I don’t have chickens”. Okay then. I guess they just ‘hang out’ in your backyard every day/night. I guess this brings new meaning to free range chickens. Snorts with piggy laughter – I kill myself!
Now I want to share a story with you. A story from the heart. I know I talk about my humans going off unattended all of the time and them getting into trouble. But sometimes their adventures don’t end up in trouble. You see over the long weekend, daddy had a craving for these things called Krystals. The are little petite hamburgers that are square and wonderful. Kind of similar (I’m told) to White Castles but mom says they’re better. I wouldn’t know because I’ve not tried the comparison.
So mom takes daddy to the restaurant and they decide to eat there which they normally don’t. But mom just had a ‘feeling’ they needed to eat there and she had a coupon for a gazillion Krystals. Okay maybe not a gazillion but quite a few. She told dad that it was an excellent buy and she was going to get that many because he could eat them during the week. Now we all know that women get these feelings called women’s intuition. You should always go with that feeling – and your first instincts. So mom/dad are eating their meal and they are done. They have leftovers, of course. That’s when a man came into the restaurant that got mom’s attention.
You could tell this man had been through some tough times by his attire. He went to the counter and they turned him away. That’s when the light bulbs went off in mom’s head and she starting shaking her head. She knew now why she needed to eat at the restaurant and order so much food. The man looked defeated from being turned away at the counter. Mom got up, walked up front and got another french fry order and large drink. During this time, the staff at the restaurant had told the man that he had to leave. Mom said, “No, he’s a paying patron and he’s eating.” She then invited the man over to dine with her and dad.
You learn so much about people just with a single act of kindness. This meal made this man’s day. Mom/dad sat with him and talked with him and laughed with him. At the end of the meal, he asked how much he owed. Mom said, “Nothing. It’s paid in full just by you joining us and making our day with your company.”
Hello my friends. First I wanted to take this time to say thank you to everyone in blogville that have stopped by to leave messages, sent cards and called the Hotel Thompson. Your kindness has meant so much to us here. It was truly a shock last weekend in the passing of Mouse Girl over the Rainbow Bridge. None of us can understand it all.
We have all taken turns trying to find comfort in mom/dad. Bacon was stuck to mom’s side like glue and as you can tell from these pics, me and Hemi are glued to daddy. We anipals are really trying to help out mom/dad just like they are trying to help us out. It will take time but I know with all of your help, we will make it through this.
And daddy has submitted a Jokes with Daddy joke for you today. I think by this time, we could all use a good laugh. So my friends, I hope you enjoy and have a great weekend!
My sweet friends at Nikitaland have started this monthly issue of Pay It Forward. We asked for you to keep this in mind all month and to share things here today on what you have been able to do. Paying it forward is not for bragging purposes – it’s an attempt to show how many different things we can do to pay it forward – lots of them don’t even include money. Gestures that we take for granted may be a God send to another person.
You know my mom has been going to the plasma clinic now for several months. There is a nurse there named Val that mom has just fallen in love with. No matter how busy her day, she has a smile to open the sky and always a kind word. Last week, it was birthday. Mom surprised her with a small gift of appreciation – something she could share with her family. I hope it brought a smile to everyone like she always brings a smile to my mom’s face.
And speaking of the plasma clinic – mom has made her 20th donation this past week as well. When she started, she made a personal commitment to herself to do 20 donations. There have been up and down times – times she has wanted to quit – but she kept on to meet her goal. I’m not sure how many people mom has touched with her donations but we are proud of her here at the Hotel Thompson. And you know what, she is trying to do 20 more. At that end of 40, she will reevaluate how she feels.
My buddy Nikitaland made up a good deeds sheet. You can get it here. You can print it, hang it on your fridge and just jot some things down that you do during the month. That way at our next meet up, you can share what you have done to PAY ITFORWARD.
AND if you are interested in getting some Pay it Forward bracelets, check out Nikitaland’s post here for ordering information. Believe me friends – WE CAN ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Next meet up will be March 2nd – mark your calendars!

What have you done this past month to pay it forward? Here’s what mom/dad have done so far.
One night, mom/dad went to a local restaurant called Cracker Barrel. They were having dinner, it was kind of crowded and this guy got seated between mom/dad and another couple. You could tell that he was a homeless man. He ordered two glasses of water and a coffee. He was content with just sitting there, enjoying the heat from the fireplace and drinking his coffee. He spoke to everyone that made contact with him – and was such a very pleasant gentleman. He wasn’t asking for anything from anyone except for conversation. Before mom/dad could buy him dinner, the other couple offered and did. Mom went up to the register and also bought him a gift card to use at the restaurant so he could also come back for another dinner without having to pay.
Mom is also still continuing with her donations of plasma. She has now made 13 donations and is getting closer to her commitment of 20. Some people ask does it hurt. There are times when you can’t even feel the needle and there are other times that you feel it and continue to feel it until the donation is done. Mom says that it doesn’t matter because what pain she does experience is nothing compared to the help it offers others.

Friends – this month mommy is going to report on something that she has started doing, something that is close to her heart and means so very much to her. She has been thinking about it for some time and to be honest with you she had not done it up until this point because of one reason – she was afraid. But she finally bit the bullet and did it. What you ask? Well, here’s mom to explain.
Thanks Bacon. When my husband Jim was in a car accident years ago, he was in the hospital for over 12 weeks, most of those in intensive care. During that time, he was treated with blood transfusions and other treatments that contained plasma. Then years later, a good friend of ours needed treatment that also came from plasma. I’ve done a LOT of research on plasma donation and it was one of those things that I really wanted to check out since it touched so close to us here at the Hotel Thompson.
Well, I took a big step on 11/18/2015 and went to a center to inquire about the procedures. Now I had done a LOT of research on line and knew about some things; however, to actually do this you have to go through a process that could take 3-5 hours the very first time. This involves watching a short film on the process, reading a short manual at the center, giving a medical history, being evaluated by a nurse and having your vitals taken – blood pressure, weight, pulse, temp. IF you pass all of this, then you are ready to give blood plasma. I was accepted – HAPPY DANCE!
If you have given blood or had blood drawn for blood work, that is how it feels. And let me tell you something my friends. This one ouch moment is *nothing* to how you feel afterwards knowing that you gave to a great cause something that you had that someone else could use.
And today by the time you read this, I have made 4 donations with 2 more scheduled this week. Even last week while on vacation, I got up at 6AM on my days off to be at the clinic and in line waiting to make a donation. Each donation, you go through vitals check and you can plan on being there for 2-4 hours. There is that big of a line which is awesome! I have to admit though, I’m having problems some visits with my pulse rate. It has to be under 100 bpm. As long as I can keep it under that, all of my other numbers (blood pressure, hemoglobin, iron and weight) are perfect. Please pray for me my friends that I can continue to do this. My commitment to myself was 20 visits.

REMEMBER – this is November and Thanksgiving is closely approaching. What will you do to pay it forward this month?. Will you help out at a food bank? Will you help out at a feed the hunger dinner? Will you raise money or give to the food bank? These are great ideas – especially for this time of year. Can’t wait to see what you do my friends 🙂

This month mom/dad decided to do something that was a little different than the usual. They eat out a lot on the weekends. They decided that they would go out during the month and whatever waitress/waiter they met that really went overboard in kindness, they would leave a very nice tip. I mean nice… not cruise around the world nice but generous enough that it would mean more than the typical tip. That was their game plan and they stuck with it.
So one place they went to they met a nice young lady and talked to her throughout their meal. They learned she was supporting herself while going to school and working two jobs to pay for school and rent. Mom/dad both looked at each other and knew this was *the one*. At the end of their meal, they added their tip in on their charge and left. They didn’t want anything in return – just a smile on the waitresses face in knowing that people that really care are out there.
