Yes you are right. It is hot outside for any likes of chili. However, we had a couple of rainy days/nights last week. So mom/dad was craving something warm for their bellies. So off they went to one of their local restaurants that has the best chili – so they say – snorts with piggy laughter.
Let me introduce you to some Texas style chili. I give you that it doesn’t look tantalizing. But mom/dad says that it is the best chili that they have had in some time. It has tender beef throughout the chili mixed with secret spices that no one will tell. It all has jalapenos in it so expect some kick to it that stays with you for a bit. Mom/dad both got theirs served with aged cheddar and crackers. You gotta have crackers… or good loaf bread which they also got smothered with butter to combat the heat.

This weeks Travels in the South is brought to you by the mommy – snorts. Her and daddy went out over the weekend and she found a really awesome salad that was right up her alley. You see it in the picture? This was called the cornbread fried chicken salad. Can you say yum? Do you see those giant croutons surrounding the sides of the salad? That is cornbread cut into croutons. Now mom didn’t eat them *in* her salad. She ate them on the side. They were delicious. Dad didn’t care for them that much and mom was fine with that. She said it was more for her. Why were they so good? They had corn and jalapenos in them. Mom said they also had a tad of sugar that she could taste which cut down the heat of the jalapenos. And of course with mom’s love of fried chicken, having some chicken in her salad was absolutely heaven.
Was it all par for eating healthy? Probably not. But this date, it touched a special place in mom’s heart… and tummy.

Go ahead – check this dog out – snorts with piggy laughter. Do you remember the Courthouse Tavern that mom/dad went to a couple of weeks ago? You can check that posting out here. Well, Houdini had a spa appointment this past Saturday in that same area. So since they were in the same area, guess what mom/dad decided to do. Yep – visit the restaurant once again.
This time, dad again went for a hamburger. Shaking my head – he’s so predictable. But mom, she wanted something different. She went for what they call a Jazzy Junkyard dog. All beef (thank goodness-snorts) with a side of steak fries. Now those fries are just the way mom likes – not soggy but crispy and wonderful. And on her dog, she added cheddar, some kind of meat she told me I’d probably be better not knowing and fresh jalapenos. You want a bite, don’t you?
.
Mom said the hot dog was awesome but she didn’t care much for the bun. The bun was toasted and although that gives a great flavor, the bun was kind of stiff and hard which is not good. So if she orders it again, she will ask them not to grill the bun.
