Keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –
Today April 16th is a day that Bacon’s mom can definitely wrap her arms around – National Stress Awareness Day. This day was created in 1992 sponsored by the Health Resource Network (HRN). They started this holiday to increase public awareness of the causes and cures of stress. And we all know that stress can come from a variety of different reasons: paying bills, work, children, schedules, car problems, friends – you name it and stress can come from it. And here in the United States with taxes being due yesterday, what better day to have this holiday then today?
Today is the day to acknowledge that you are stressed out and then do something about it. Go for a walk. Try some meditation. Try some exercise. Do some yoga. Just lay down and relax. Just for a bit, don’t concentrate on the wrongs in your life but concentrate on the things that you have to be grateful for. Shrug off this stress even if it is just for today. I know this afternoon me and Bacon are going to try yoga. Wish us luck – his downward pig pose is not something I’m looking forward to – chitter chatter!

Today, January 21st, is a great and wonderful day my fellow friends. It is Squirrel Appreciation Day. I can tell you – today is *my* day. Today, you should appreciate us tree climbing, entertaining, nut gathering neighborhood squirrels. Being a squirrel can be hard. Some of us give others a bad name. They are the ones that eat food out of the feeders, eat some veggies in your gardens and chase/tease your pooches. Then there are squirrels like me who are highly educated, have families to take care of and bring your enjoyment and education. Focus on us great squirrels for the day. Heck, give us some nuts, a little hand out, or wave at us from time to time.
In case you were wondering: Squirrel Appreciation Day was created by wildlife rehabilitator Christy Hargrove of Asheville, North Carolina
There are more than 300 species of squirrel. Different types of squirrels range in size from five inches (the African pygmy squirrel) to three feet (Indian giant squirrel). The word “squirrel” comes from the Greek word skiouros, which means shadow-tailed.
When hiding its food, a squirrel goes through an elaborate process of masking the location by pretending to bury the item a few times before settling on a final spot. While red squirrels are known for vigorously defending their territories, some females turn over all or part of their holdings, including a critical food cache, to their offspring as a way of bolstering the pups’ chances of survival during the difficult first year of life.
So upon this holiday, please reflect a few minutes on us and throw us some extra feed.
Thank you very much. This public announcement had been brought to you by Journalist Rocky the Squirrel. Thank you for your time.

Today, January 19th, is a great day. It is National Popcorn Day. This is a wonderful day that we can all enjoy and nip our teeth into – literally. I know my kind loves corn and I know that little piglet in the Hotel Thompson loves the popped corn. Some people believe that the origin of this day is somehow connected to the Super Bowl. I guess it kind of makes sense since they’re all kinds of bowl games on right now. I know Bacon’s daddy is in football heaven.
Let me tell you story about Bacon and his love of popcorn. That little oinker can be all the way in his bedroom playing around and watching his television. But the moment that he hears the corn kernels hitting the pan in the kitchen, he totally loses it and runs through the hallways skidding into the kitchen. He will sit on the floor in the middle of the kitchen and watch his mommy as she pops the corn over the stove – you know old fashioned like. When it starts to pop-pop-pop, he always walks over and hits his mom in the ankles with his snout wanting some. He knows he’s going to get some but he doesn’t have a lot of patience that little guy. And then when he does get some, he sounds like a little chomping machine. He’s a hoot.
Enjoy the day my friends. I’ll be back soon!

Today, January 14th, is a special day. It is Dress Up Your Pet Day. Today gives you the right to dress up your pet whether they are a dog, cat, pig, squirrel, lizard or a goldfish. Okay maybe not a goldfish. What would he wear? A swimsuit? chitter-chatter

And by all means, you need to post these pictures of your pets all dressed up. This is one of my favorite pictures of the pig dressed up – Sir Bacon.
Yep, yo
u read it correctly. His little shirt says, “I didn’t do it.” I think for the first 6 months of his life, he probably did think that was his name – HA!
And Houdini’s shirt – somehow it just doesn’t seem right but on the other hand it seems perfect doesn’t it?
.Enjoy your day my friends. Dress those pets up and have fun!
I’ll be back soon!

Today, January 6th, is a special day. For one thing, it’s Cuddle Up Day. Doesn’t that just sound wonderful? It’s cold outside, make a fire and cuddle up for some snuggles. And, you don’t have to cuddle with someone to appreciate this day. Cuddle up in your favorite chair in front of that fireplace, pop in a movie, relax and enjoy your time. Bring out one of your favorite stuffed animals – I’ve seen Bacon’s mom do that. And hey, speaking of Bacon – cuddle up to your favorite pet. I know Bacon will get his share of cuddles today.. as well as Houdini… as well as Hemi… as well as Mouse Girl 🙂
AND…
Today is also another special day. Today is also the big guy’s birthday here at the Hotel Thompson. It’s dad’s birthday. Now, he won’t tell us how old he is but I think he was around during the dinosaur era. Why? Because I hear Bacon’s mom calling him T-Rex at times. Shakes squirrel head – so that has to be true, right?
So at this time, all of us here at the Hotel Thompson would like to wish the big guy a very wonderful HAPPY BIRTHDAY. You do so much for us from giving us nuts to cleaning our litter boxes out to even cooking for us from time to time. You are definitely the icing on our cake… and speaking of cake – enjoy – we love you big guy!

Today, January 3rd, is a special day. It is the Festival of Sleep Day. I think today is a day that we can all wrap ourselves around and snuggle down for some rest. The holidays are far behind us now. All of the rush is done with and it is time to get plenty of rest. Take you a power nap, hibernate for a few hours, sleep in before work, doze while reading a book – just get plenty of rest!
Enjoy the day my friends. I’ll be back soon!

Are you kidding me?! Don Juan is really up to no good this year. Mom heard noises last night around midnight. She pinpointed the sounds to the bathroom. The door was closed and she quietly opened it and caught Don Juan videotaping some of mom’s collectible Barbies in a so called ‘hot sink’. Talk about mad! Are you kidding me Don Juan?! Making porn tapes is one thing. But taking mom’s collectible Barbies out of the packages – oh my piggy heavens. It’s a good thing you scurried off the sink and hid before she caught you. You are so on mom’s hit list now.

Yeah – the cooler weather is finally getting here. I just love Autumn – or Fall – whichever you prefer. I love the cooler weather. I love that it means that it’s almost the holidays. And this year, mom says it means I can run and jump in the leaves in the back yard. I totally can’t wait.
Happy Autumn my friends! XOXO – Bacon

January 24th, is commemorated as National Compliment Day every year. It is a very special day and celebrated in most parts of the world apart from the USA. This day represents a positive theme – a positive tone in a positive atmosphere – everywhere you are whether it be at home, the grocery market, work or that place the humans feel to punish themselves by what they call “working out”.
Compliments – compliments – compliments – that is what we most do today. Have you ever noticed how someone just brightens up at a compliment, even a complete stranger? Do you notice how much harder you work when you get a compliment? So today, we shall compliment our little hearts out.
So here are some suggestions that can help you today on your National Compliment Day.
Compliment that human that is consistently working out in their hamster ball.
Compliment that human that really has touched you in some point of your life in a good way.
Compliment your spouse. Sometimes you humans don’t express your feelings enough to each other. Maybe if you compliment them, they’ll give you more nuts for the winter.
By all means, compliment your pets. They’re always there for you no matter what, even when you come home upset. They just want to love on you. They know no hate.
Compliment the guy that cuts you off in traffic this morning. Maybe he won’t hear you but you can smile and wave – with your entire hand not your middle finger – HA!. Maybe instead of uttering fowl language under your breath, think to yourself, “Isn’t he a nice guy for getting in front of me blocking me from any danger.”
Compliment your mother and father – if it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t be here. Heck, have your spouse compliment them too. If it wasn’t for them, your spouse wouldn’t have you.
Compliment your pups… I mean children. I’m sure they do something else besides being destructive.
Compliment your teacher. Compliment your bus driver or your chauffeur.
While you’re at it – compliment nature and all of its little creatures, like me 🙂 Hey, you can even throw us some extra feed outside, we won’t say no.
You get the drift. You give out compliments and you give a positive sense of well being. You make someone feel great with just a few words. We all know that words can be so destructive. Let’s turn it around today.
I, Journalist Rocky the Squirrel, challenge you. I challenge you to give out a minimum of FIVE compliments today. I bet you can do more but FIVE is a good start. Are you going to take the challenge?
