Boo! – Cemeteries

Cemetery Hill

When I think of places that a lot people died during a lot of fighting, one of the places that come to mind is Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  Cemetery Hill had so many people that died during the Battle of Gettsyburg that it’s hard for me to wrap my mind around it.  There were so many bodies that it was hard to bury everyone in a timely manner.  You can imagine the smell that overcame the land.  There are still reports today of people smelling death.  And you know what they say about unrested bodies, they become ghosts forever looking for redemption.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

A famous cemetery that mom would  like to visit is in Los Angeles, California.  (I know – she’s weird like that.  She finds walking through the cemeteries as calming as walking on a beach.  Go figure – she’s my mom.)  Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the final resting place of many celebrities over the years.   I’ll need to break down a listing of more important graves here later on in the month.  For now though, let’s concentrate on some hauntings of the cemetery.  A famous person known to haunt here is Clifton Webb.  People at the cemetery claim to hear voices and lights near the Abbey of the Psalms Mausoleum.  A story that intrigues me that I’ve seen on television numerous times is the crypt of Rudolph Valentino.  For years on the anniversary of his death, a lady dressed in black would be seen wearing a veil to cover her face at his crypt leaving a single red rose.  No one really knew for sure who this person was and still today the tradition of leaving a single red rose continues on his anniversary.

Bonaventure Cemetery

And I must end this stroll through the cemeteries at one of mom/dad’s most famous places in Savannah, Georgia at Bonaventure Cemetery.  Did you know that this cemetery had the “Bird Girl” statue that is the photograph of the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil?  I say had now because it has since been moved to a museum nearby but there are still some amazing tombs and headstones left.  Mom/dad have spent multiple days and hours strolling through and visiting with the folks still there.  One of the famous haunts is of little Gracie Watson who died of pneumonia when she was only six years old.  Currently they have her grave fenced off… is that to keep people from touching her little statue or from keeping little Gracie from touching you?   There’s also the hell hounds that local legend have talked about.  People claim to hear them snarling but no one ever sees them.  Perhaps they feel the hot breath of a dog on their ankles letting them know they need to step back.  You think?

31 Days of Spook – Children Say the Darnedest Things

Sometimes, little ones can say the darnedest things when you are least expecting it.  They say that children are more ‘open’ to the paranormal.  After reading these stories below, do tell me what you think. Have you ever been told anything of this nature by a child?

A few years ago, I was putting my friend’s daughter to bed for the night.  She was about three at the time and she was fighting going to sleep.  She asked me why she had to go to bed and I said, “Because it is late and it’s time for little girls to get a good night’s rest.”

She then pointed at nothing across the room and said, “What about that little girl?”

I was heading to the bathroom on the second floor of my aunt’s house when I saw my cousin April on the stairs.  April was four and very animated.  She was busy making funny faces while sitting on the stairs.  I asked her what she was doing and she said, “I’m copying the lady with the braid.”  I looked around and there was no one else but us.  I asked, “Where is the lady April?”  She pointed to a beam running parallel to the stairwell.  I asked April, “What is the lady doing?”  She said, “Making funny faces.”  I smiled and started walking up the stairs again when April said something that stopped me in my tracks.  “Her braids are wrapped around her neck.”  I turned back and and asked April to repeat herself.  April pointed and said, “The lady is hanging by her braid, she’s making funny faces.”  Then April started making a face which I then realize was as if someone was gasping for air.

I watched a few kids while their parents were at a movie.  I put the youngest kid, age 4, to sleep and watched television downstairs until the parents came home.  The next day, the parents called me.  According to the 4 year old, I stood inthe doorway and stared at him for a very long time just smiling.

31 Days of Spook – The Legends of the Mont’s d’ Arree

Hello ghostly friends.  Today we have a guest submission.  This is from my brother Easy across the pond.  And what a delicious hands on tale with pictures.  I do so hope you enjoy it.  Try not to shake too much.

The Legends of the Mont’s d’ Arree

Located in the middle of Finisterre, the Monts d’ Arree are the natural border between north and south of Finisterre. This area is the bretagne bretonnante, the heart of Brittany.

And the time stands still there… literally, you can google it, with all our modern stuff, satellites, radio masts and whatnot, here NO cell phone works.  The area is occupied by goblins, druids and some creatures of the darkness.

At night the stone carvings of Ankou, the death, come back to life and therefore all hikers and wanderers avoid the abandoned buildings you can find even in the darkest forest and far away from civilization.

If you enter such a house, you never will leave it… even when you run like the wind or a Weimaraner… just saying.

There also is one of the sneakiest bogs, the Yeun-Elez. Legend has it that the devil hid his treasures once there and those who want to get rich will die trying. The  Prince of Darkness will grab the gold diggers by their legs and he will drag them into eternal darkness.  Even the entrance to hell, Youdig, is here in this bog….butt no worries, the devil is not at home he is on the way to Lac St. Michel where another creature of the night lures for fresh victims.

Do you wonder why there is foam on the water? That’s because the lake is the playground of the Kannerezed Noz, the washer women of the night. They come out at night to wash the burial garments of recently passed people.

If you meet them, you have to wash the garments with them till dawn… if you can’t stand this they will break your arms and throw you in the lake.

Every year around Howl-o-ween, the druids come to this places to celebrate their annual samhain and a lot of people of the Gorsedds of Bards from Wales, Awens of Cornwall or Scotland  or the Goursez Breizh visit this area for their rituals and it is common here  to see people in white, blue, red or green robes who wander through the bog or the mountains. We don’t laugh at them.  We greet them and leave them alone.  You never know where humbug ends and magic begins…. specially here… tout commence à  finisterre.

HAPPY SHOCKTOBER

31 Days of Spook – Martha Washington Boarding School

Hello friends.  Are you spooked yet?  Well today I continue with my guest submission by Angie Deptula.  Wasn’t her submission earlier today just chilling?  Well, your in for a extra treat with her final submission.  Happy reading my spooks.

There once was a boarding school for delinquent girls, named Martha Washington Institute or Martha Washington School for Girls. It was located at Brighton Beach on Lake Washington in Seattle. It functioned from 1900-1971, and at one point became known as “Martha Washington School for the Insane Girls.” Prior to this, Judge Smith had owned the house. Smith built the home with a nursery and a boathouse, with a hollow stairway to a madrone tree on the property, a location that plays a role in today’s hauntings. Rumors of violence, murder and suicide are associated with the school while it was opened.  It is thought that a janitor of the school had raped and killed a girl by hanging her on the tree. Whether this hanging was done on the madrone tree or not, I’m not aware of that.

In 1971, after the school closed, a satanic group utilized the building for rituals and sacrificed animals on the property. Because this is within a residential location, the general community became uneasy with the building so the city council decided to have the building demolished and turned into a park. Today, without knowing the history of the location, one would think nothing of it.

The park is a popular spot for people to walk their dogs at, or relax and picnic on a nice sunny day. However when nighttime comes, the empty park has an ominous atmosphere. Paranormal activities occur frequently. The old madrone tree is still present and is thought to have ghostly energies attached to it. And the area where the stairway Judge Smith once built is still there and is thought to be a portal. Visitors often feel a presence or become uneasy in that area like they’re being watched. Disembodied footsteps and screaming have also been reported in the park. Teenagers who visit in odd numbers have had a spirit follow them home. A mom who was once visiting the park one evening took a picture of her son and noticed behind him an apparition of a girl looking right at her. Sightings of a girl have been reported multiple times by different sources as well.

One in particular is from a good friend of mine, Pam. One day Pam and her two friends visited the park early in the morning. The girls walked around the empty park. Pam was walking with one of her friend, while the other was off somewhere else. Pam caught movement from her peripheral and turned, noticing a female apparition of a girl in a white nightgown walking, coming up side-by- side to her and her friend. She choked up, froze, the blood rushed out of her face as she realized this girl was translucent. Pam’s friend quickly realized why: Her friend acknowledged the ghostly girl too. They ran and called for their other friend, hurrying to the car. Inside the car, the new car would not start. The girls panicked, feeling ice cold, squealing and squirming in their seats. After a few minutes, the car finally started and they sped away. Pam and the girls have never returned since.

I have been to the park too, with friends, but have never experienced anything like that. I never explored the park long enough, probably because I was too chicken from all the spooky stories I’ve heard of. However, I did feel uneasy, overcome with chills as I felt like invisible eyes were on me the whole time. It’s indescribable, but the place really does feel ominous at night. I wonder if this girl in the white dress or nightgown is the same girl who was killed or murdered at the school, and if she’s the same apparition seen over and over by others? I can imagine there being other spirits on site as well if the place was once used as a satanic gathering. The mysteries of this place are left unknown, but the uneasiness it provokes onto visitors still remains.

Bacon’s Tales of Terror

Oh my friends.  Can you believe that in a short couple of weeks, October will be here.  You do know what that means, right?  31 days of Spook will be on my blog!   31 days of something scary, something that goes bump in the night, ghosts and ghouls, horror, haunts and other spooks.  Shivers – I get excited just thinking about it!

I’ve been working hard here in my bedroom searching around the world for stories to tell.  It’s hard grunt work – literally.  Sometimes I even scared myself!  With all of that work, I almost forgot about September 13th. It was almost here before I knew it.

I thought to myself, “Self, what can I do for the 13th of September?  What can knock people to the floor, make them scream and run to their mothers?”  It had to be good.  It had to be awesome.  Then BAM it struck me and I took flight to the internet.  Courtesy of said internet was some random pictures I found.  You see, these pictures were so good that I think they need NO explanation.

So without further ado, BOO my friends!
