April 22nd is EARTH DAY. Every year, more than 1 billion people in 175 countries will participate in various Earth Day events on this date. It is the largest civic observance in the world. The purpose is to raise awareness about important environmental issues.
The first Earth Day took place in 1970. After witnessing the affects of an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, US Senator Gaylord Nelson organized a grassroots environmental teach in on college campuses across the country. Many people believe that this first Earth Day celebration marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement.
Celebrate today – plant a tree, help clean up a beach or park and/or participate in an event near you. Help to keep this world a better place for everyone!
And a little blast from the past you might remember that deals with Earth Day – Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Do you remember this show? It was an American animated environmental program created by Ted Turner, Robert Larkin III and Barbara Pyle. It came out on September 15, 1990.
The basis of the program was set with Gaia – the spirit of the planet. She is awakened by drilling which is above her resting chamber. To control the damage, she sends out five magic rings to youths around the world who will become the Planeteers.
Kwame is from Africa and has the power of Earth with his ring.
Wheeler is from North America and has the power of Fire with his ring.
Linka is from the Soviet Union and has the power of Wind with her ring.
Gi is from Asia and has the power of Water with her ring.
Ma-Ti is from South America and has the power of Heart and telepathy with his ring.
All five can use their rings special powers to call the super hero – Captain Planet for help.
I think today would be the perfect day to check out this old classic of helping the environment!

Buckle up my friends… it’s going to be a bumpy ride today. Today we are focusing on the Ellis Hotel that is located in downtown Atlanta, right in mom/dad’s backyard if you will.
The Ellis Hotel used to be called the Winecoff Hotel. On December 7, 1946 it had over 260 guests checked in for overnight. Around 3:00AM (the witching hour some say), an elevator operator smelled smoke near the fifth floor and notified other employees. Unfortunately by that time, the third, fourth and fifth floors were already on fire. The hotel was suppose to be fireproof and it turned out that night that it wasn’t. Due to being ‘fireproof, there was no fire escapes, no fire doors, no sprinklers or alarm system. Over 119 guests perished that night.
The hotel was reopened in 1951 as the Peachtree Hotel on Peachtree. It passed through multiple ownerships and in 2007 it was named the Ellis Hotel. There are rumors of items being moved, voices, children running and woman screaming down the hallways. One time, two weeks in a row, the current alarm system went off at 2:48AM – the same time each week.
Mom/dad felt festive one day about a year ago. It was during their monthly date night and they spent the night at the Hotel Ellis. It doesn’t take much to spook dad but mom on the other hand is a hard one to crack. They stayed on the third floor in a very nice room. Dad woke mommy up around 2:30AM complaining about the activity in the hallway. When mom checked it out, there was nothing. She didn’t hear it or see anything but dad said it woke him up. Around 3:30AM, mommy woke up smelling smoke. She’s very sensitive to the smell and she said it was overwhelming. Again, she woke daddy up and he didn’t smell anything. And for some reason, the elevator door went up and down a lot that night. They could hear the doors opening and closing but no foot steps. Needless to say, they didn’t get much sleep that night.
No – not you my friends. Never you. Television commercials. That’s it. Have you noticed the lies that spew out of that box? I’m here to tell you it’s true. Lies – Lies – Lies. Products that do this. Clothes that make you feel that. Shaking my head. Lies. Whatever happened to truth in advertising? I bet you are asking yourself why I’m so pigcited over something that you already knew. I’ll tell you why in one word – Mom.
You see, mom sweet mom, saw a certain commercial on television. After watching it, she got this ‘look’ in her eyes. I’ve seen that look my friends. It means trouble. And in this case it was trouble with a capital T. The next day, she came home with a bag in her hand. Took out the product, looked at daddy and tried the product. After opening her eyes, she looked at daddy again. I didn’t get it. He was still the same. Mom on the other hoof, lost it, snorted and went into the kitchen. You want to know what commercial it was don’t you? Okay, I’ll show it to you. But let me tell you straight up. It doesn’t work. Snorts with piggy laughter.

Another week down my friends. It was a busy week with mom/dad’s anniversary and Bacon’s birthday but it was a fun week. Bacon has also been busy getting ready for his 31 Days of Spook in October and of course mom has started her DIEt again for the gazillionth time – rolls puppy eyes. Do all women go through this? Please tell me yes – barks!
The weather here has started getting cooler. Bacon is loving that. I myself am not sure. This six pound body gets cold like you wouldn’t believe. A couple of nights, mom has made a fire (by flipping the switch – barks with laughter). I crawl up in her lap on her chaise to feel the heat and watch the flames. That is the life my friends. And don’t you love my shirt? I got it just for Bacon to pick on him. He’s not too fond of it for some unknown reason? Maybe because it makes my butt look small?
Oh, and this is hilarious. When mom/dad came home Sunday from their night out, guess what happened? The toilet decided it didn’t want to work anymore and wouldn’t flush. Isn’t that awesome? So mom had to go the local Home Depot store to pick up what she called a flapper. I wouldn’t let her out of my sight so guess who got to go with her? Yep that would be me. I was her assistant. So we went together. That place is cool. The smells are funny but there was so many people that wanted to pet me and oohh and aaww over me. Of course, I ate that up! I was the main attraction in the plumbing aisle.
Well that’s all for me my friends – yawns – I hope you had a wonderful week as well. Happy weekend!
Oh friends. It was worse than I thought. Oh my pigs! I may need your help and a quick plan B. You see mom/dad had the “family” meeting Saturday night. I really thought they were joking. Really I did. I even started snorting waiting for the punch line. Of course mom has to zip up with her wonderful phrases such as, “This will be good for you”; “It’s a growing experience”; “Here’s your chance to shine”.
Yeah right mom. It doesn’t matter how much you sugar coat it, it sucks. There I said it. It sucks. What sucks you ask?
Mom and dad are sending me to camp. Outside. In nature. With other peeps. No television. No air conditioning. In Nature – did I mention that? And they expect me to participate in the entire ordeal. What is up with that?!
Look friends. I’ve seen enough horror movies on my television. I know about Jason. I know about not turning your back to anything. I’ve seen movies where other campers have tied their friends up to floats and set them out on the lake. Or put them out in nature covered in honey. This little oinker is not amused. This can’t turn out good for me. This piggy will not start campaigning for I ❤ camp anytime soon. No way. There’s no way I can survive this.
What if a UFO comes down and gets me and tries to probe me? What if they take me to their place and not bring me back? I can foresee so many potential problems here my friends. Can you help me out? Can one of you kidnap me or persuade mom/dad not to send me.
