Shopping Around the World

Oinks and snorts sweet friends.

This month my cousin Teddy is hosting Shopping Around the World for me.  (You might want to make a note now that cousin Teddy will also be hosting for me next month as well.)   Thank you so much cousin Teddy – we really appreciate the help here during these hectic times at the Hotel Thompson.

This month the assignment was favorite snacks.  Now mom has been enjoying a favorite snack that she kind of whipped up (literally) that she can’t get enough of at work.  She says that sometimes she needs the extra caffeine.  Rolls my piggy eyes.  I guess since she has given up sodas she has to make it up somehow huh?  I hope you enjoy her snack my friends.  It seems mom proof which means it might be a little easy – I hope.

First you need some ingredients:  Creamer.  Mom loves the Almond Joy creamer – but any kind will do.  This entire bottle was $2.50 and it lasts mom for almost three weeks.  That averages to about $0.12 a cup for creamer.  Two packs of Splenda.  A box of 100 cost $3.00 therefore that is $0.03 per packet.  12 ice cubes – free YAY.  1 cup of cold coffee.  Mom paid $6.00 for a container of coffee that makes something like 32 pots of coffee which calculates to $0.19 a pot.

Total cost for mom’s treat is less than $0.50 – what a steal for a cup of instant energy.

Now how does she make this wonder?  Put all ingredients into a blender.  Make sure blender is plugged in (mom has forgotten that important step in the past – snorts) and push blend button for smoothie.  There you go bend and then pour into a cup.  Add straw and enjoy your moment in the afternoon… or morning… or evening… or in the middle of the night.  Mom makes this snack all of the time now.

Paw Time with Houdini

Barks!  Hey my friends.  Hope your week is going awesome.  Last weekend, I spent some time at the Spa.  Someone here at the Hotel Thompson told me how much fun it was to go in our magic backyard and roll in mud – I’m not mentioning names but we all know who oinks and snorts in these parts.  Well, I did.  And guess what.  That mud sticks to your fur in places it doesn’t need to stick if you know what I mean.  I didn’t find it fun at all.  Mom let me out just for “a few minutes” she said and then came back to a mud caked Yorkshire Terror – her words not mine.  She was taking me in that day anyway to the Spa.  I just wanted to make sure they earned their money when they gave me my oatmeal bath.  See, I was helping mom out, right?

I came back home later in the day and mom had bought me a new toy.  OMD!  That toy is the bomb.  It’s my favorite this week for sure… well at least today.  You roll it, squeak it and it lights up.  OMD – I played with it until I wore myself out.  I had mom take a video to share it with you my friends.  I hope you enjoy it and Jokes with Dad.  Have a great weekend and remember to roll in some mud ❤

Bacon’s Show and Tell

Welcome my Friends to August – Bacon’s Show and Tell

This month we are talking about that ONE thing that you had growing up that impressed your life all of these years that you still think about it?  Something that maybe perhaps you still have somewhere put away in your home?  Something that when you look back at and think of the times you had with this ONE thing that it makes you smile so wide and your heart just glows?

Today I want to talk about one of mom’s things that has touched her all of her life.  Something that she has kept  and would never do without.  See this little dresser – three deep drawers with foxes/bears on the front.  This little dresser has been in mom’s life close to 46 years.  You see, shortly after mom was born her daddy built this little dresser for her.  And mom has kept it all these years.

It has lots of dings and scratches and some of the stickers on the front are even starting to come off.  But still mom has it and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.  It sits in my and Houdini’s room and we treasure it too.

In fact, currently it is being used to store all of Houdini’s clothes.  So you can kind of say that it’s second generation now doing it’s thing. ❤

Bacon’s Show and Tell

Thank you so very much my friends for making Bacon’s Show and Tell a great place to be every month.  It takes everyone in blogville to have a party every month 🙂

This month for Bacon’s Show and Tell we are highlighting the funniest gift you have been given.

At Christmas when mom/dad were first starting to date, both sides of parents would have get together’s for dinner and presents.  Around the 2nd or 3rd year of mom/dad dating, they were gathered at mom’s parents house for presents.  They would pass presents around and each person would open them up while others watched.  This particular Christmas had two funny gifts.

One was for mom’s mom (my Nana) that was from dad.  One day dad heard Nana telling Grandpa that she absolutely loved pickles and she couldn’t get enough of them.  Well, dad wanting to please her, fixed her up.  He went to our local Sam’s Club and bought Nana the biggest jar of pickles he could find.  One gallon of awesome dill pickles all to herself.  What a guy huh?

The same Christmas, mom also got a present from daddy.  She opened it up and it held nothing but band-aids and bandages of all assortment.  Mom was confused at most while others wondered too what was this about.  That’s when mom found the card in the box from daddy.  It said, “You look as good to me as a bare ankle to a rattlesnake and I’m going to be all over you.”  Various shades of red on mom’s face can not explain the embarrassment and trying to explain the box without reading the note.

Shopping Around the World

This month we are posting anything we want to share that you cook, prepare, fix or throw together at your crib.  It can be anything.  So knowing this, we want to share something that we absolutely love here at the Hotel Thompson.  You here a lot of flack about one of the ingredients but to be a true southerner, you love it.  And since some of the ingredients are shall we say  pig related – this is Bacon’s mom taking over the posting today.

For those cool mornings or nights that you don’t feel like cooking much – we fix a big pot of southern cheese and sausage grits.  Yep, you heard it – grits.  Grits are a southern love.  They are made from ground hominy.  And in this picture, we went to our local Waffle House one night for dinner.

Grits are very cheap here.  You can buy a 2 pound bag at most markets for around $3.00 – and trust me, they go a long ways (probably less than $0.50 a meal).  Now here at the Hotel Thompson, we put about three cups of water in a pot and put it on the stove medium high.  Season with salt and add one cup of grits.  You are going to let the water boil and the grits cook for about 20-30 minutes.  Make sure that you stir occasionally – grits will stick and expand.

While the grits are cooking, go ahead and fry up some sausages in a pan.  I make sausage patties and cook them on a skillet beside my grits so I’m constantly watching.  I buy a pack of 12 sausages and cook them for the entire week.  One pack is $4.00 – we use about 6 patties with the grits.

When your grits are about done, add 1/2 stick of butter (around $0.30), more salt to taste and black pepper.  Now add grated cheddar cheese (we buy blocks and rate our own (around $0.50) to your grits and stir everything together to melt the cheese.  Your sausage should just about be done.  Cut the sausage up into bite size pieces and add to your grits, stir everything together and there you go – a southern delight for sure!

And the bottom price with everything – around $3.50
