Boo! Scariest Movie

Oh my friends.  Let’s do a twist today.  Let’s see if you can scare me for a change.  Mom/dad were sitting the living room last night with us anipals.  The room was dark except for the flames of the fireplace.  They were talking about movies they have seen over the years that scared them silly.  Conversation went back and forth until they settled on two.

Dad’s Movie Pick – 1408.  This movie came out in 2007 and started John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.  You see John Cusack’s character was a so called ‘ghost hunter’.  He went to famous places and would spend the night in haunted rooms.  Most of the time, nothing happened and the places were debunked.  But then while writing his latest book, he travels to New York to stay at the Dolphin Hotel in room 1408, a haunted room.  In fact, it was so haunted that the hotel would not rent the room to anyone.  Through lawyers, he finds out that if the room is vacant, the hotel has to rent it so he makes a reservation to stay.  He checks in and meets with the hotel manager, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson tries everything he can to persuade Cusack’s character not to stay in the room – a room upgrade, expensive booze and even will allow Cusack to look at a book he has made showing over 50 deaths in room 1408.  But in the end, Cusack stays in 1408.  Let’s just say that 1408 is everything you can imagine it to be.

Mom’s Movie Pick – House on Haunted Hill.  This movie came out in 1999.  Mom/dad will usually go to the movies to see comedy’s but for some reason, they saw this movie in the theater.  Don’t ask me why because it’s not like them.  Mom actually watched part of the movies with her hands covering her eyes.  At one time, she even told daddy that she might have to leave – that’s how scared she was.  The entire movie is about a millionaire who offers a diverse group of people $1,000,000 to spend the night in a haunted house with a horrifying past.  “nuff said before I make water from being scared.

So my question to you my friends, what is the one movie that you saw that scared your pants off?

Boo! Exton Witch House

This abandoned house is called the Exton Witch House and is located in Pennsylvania.  It is said that this house holds some dark mysterious secrets.  According to legend, there was a family of four witches that are buried on the property.  Their graves are positioned next to each other and it is believed that their corpses are buried in the upright position.  Why do you ask?  Supposedly witches were buried in this custom as to prevent them from causing trouble after their death.  There once was actual tombstones to mark their graves but vandals have since ran off with them.  Those that visit, so that the location is eerie and quiet.  Some even experience strange occurrences.  Would you be willing to go and explore the house with me?

Boo! Cemeteries

Today we are going to highlight some famous and eerie cemeteries.  Are you brave enough to enter my cemetery of the famous dead? I’ve wandered throughout the internet and done a lot of research to bring you some intriguing places of final rest… or is it?  I hope that you find them interesting.   Let’s take a little stroll amidst the stones shall we.

.

St. Louis Cemetery #1

When I think of scary and mysterious cemeteries, my first thoughts have to go towards New Orleans.  St. Louis Cemetery #1 opened in 1789 and there are over 100,000 residents.  With that much of a crowd, you know some have to be a little unhappy with their final resting place.  I know I would be.  The most famous tenant here is Marie Laveau.  Marie Laveau was a famous voodoo priestess.  People visit her grave site often and mark three “X’s” on her grave.  People that do so believe that by marking the three “X’s”, Marie Laveau will grant them their wish.

Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery and Resurrection Cemetery

The next that came to mind were two different cemeteries in the Chicago area.  The first one is Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery.  I’ve heard about this place a lot over the years.  I’ve seen specials on television and mommy has read me different chilling facts in books.  Not only does this cemetery have a history of unexplained lights and ghosts, it has an entire house that mysteriously appears and disappears.  Many people that have seen the house describe it as a white farmhouse with pillars and a swing.  The other cemetery was Resurrection Cemetery in Chicago.  This story sends chills up and down my spine every time I see it on television.  It starts off with a beautiful girl who was walking home from a dance one late night.  She was hit by a car and killed and has been looking for a ride home every since.  I saw a story one night where a man picked up this lady at a dance.  They danced into the late hours and he admitted that she felt cold to the touch.  Upon taking her home after the dance, she asked him to stop in front of the cemetery.  She got out and disappeared into the air.

Howard Street Cemetery

And how can we forget the most eerie of places in Salem, Massachusetts at Howard Street Cemetery.  With all of the witch hunts that took place here, this has got to be one of the most haunted places in the United States.  Just think of all of the innocent people that were slowly tortured and burned at the stake for the public believing they were witches.  How many of those spirits still walk around wanting people to know that they were innocent but forever labeled a witch.  Talk about your unfinished business in setting things straight.  This reminds me of a story that mom told me about a guy named Giles Corey.  He was officially the only person to die by torture during these Witch Trials.  He wouldn’t say that he was a witch so the sheriff of the time made him lay down in the middle of his field.  The sheriff then had a board placed across his chest and slowly added stones on top of the board.  Eventually two days later, Corey was crushed to death in a slow and agonizing way.

31 Days of Spook – The Legends of the Mont’s d’ Arree

Hello ghostly friends.  Today we have a guest submission.  This is from my brother Easy across the pond.  And what a delicious hands on tale with pictures.  I do so hope you enjoy it.  Try not to shake too much.

The Legends of the Mont’s d’ Arree

Located in the middle of Finisterre, the Monts d’ Arree are the natural border between north and south of Finisterre. This area is the bretagne bretonnante, the heart of Brittany.

And the time stands still there… literally, you can google it, with all our modern stuff, satellites, radio masts and whatnot, here NO cell phone works.  The area is occupied by goblins, druids and some creatures of the darkness.

At night the stone carvings of Ankou, the death, come back to life and therefore all hikers and wanderers avoid the abandoned buildings you can find even in the darkest forest and far away from civilization.

If you enter such a house, you never will leave it… even when you run like the wind or a Weimaraner… just saying.

There also is one of the sneakiest bogs, the Yeun-Elez. Legend has it that the devil hid his treasures once there and those who want to get rich will die trying. The  Prince of Darkness will grab the gold diggers by their legs and he will drag them into eternal darkness.  Even the entrance to hell, Youdig, is here in this bog….butt no worries, the devil is not at home he is on the way to Lac St. Michel where another creature of the night lures for fresh victims.

Do you wonder why there is foam on the water? That’s because the lake is the playground of the Kannerezed Noz, the washer women of the night. They come out at night to wash the burial garments of recently passed people.

If you meet them, you have to wash the garments with them till dawn… if you can’t stand this they will break your arms and throw you in the lake.

Every year around Howl-o-ween, the druids come to this places to celebrate their annual samhain and a lot of people of the Gorsedds of Bards from Wales, Awens of Cornwall or Scotland  or the Goursez Breizh visit this area for their rituals and it is common here  to see people in white, blue, red or green robes who wander through the bog or the mountains. We don’t laugh at them.  We greet them and leave them alone.  You never know where humbug ends and magic begins…. specially here… tout commence à  finisterre.

HAPPY SHOCKTOBER

31 Days of Spook – Ring Around the Rosie

Hello my spooky friends.  I have a guest submission story for you today.  And trust me, it brought shivers to this little piggy.  The story comes from our great friend Angie Deptula.  Please be sure to let her know what you think.  We send off many thanks for this submission ❤

Ring Around the Rosie

Ada Langan looked and thought nothing special or peculiar about the oval leather mirror. Old and worn, the aged leather, despite a gash on the right corner, looked decent. She walked away from the bedroom, appreciating the secondhand mirror that came with her new place. The apartment couldn’t have been more perfect: spacious, high ceilings, and such charm on top of Capitol Hill. For the price, she would have been insane to pass on the amazing deal. It was unheard of for a thousand-square-feet place to cost only eight hundred dollars! She not only had a bedroom, but now an office where she could study for her MCAT, and a splendid bathroom with a porcelain claw foot tub.

Inside the office, she unpacked her textbooks, stacking them onto her bookshelf. Silence suppressed her cheery vibe and she yearned for music. She walked into the living room, switched on the light and approached her iPod station on a vintage chest. She pushed the ON button and closed her eyes, smiled to Etta James’ voice.

Ada took two steps into the office and froze, bewildered. Etta’s voice stopped in mid-singing, as the familiar nursery rhyme “Ring Around the Rosie” played in full blast. She heard a little girl’s laughter, little footsteps creaked on the hardwood floor.

“Hello? Who’s there?”

No answer.

She scanned the room and grabbed her wooden umbrella. Tiptoeing, she inched forward, balancing her stride and holding her breath, then thought she was being silly. A little girl could do no harm and she had no reason to be afraid. She dropped her precarious stance and walked into the living room, still grasping the umbrella. Her presence stopped the child’s song, but next to the iPod her incense glowed and the room was redolent with citrus. Certain she did not light the incense, she suspected the child intruder. But no one stood among her in the living room, which connected to the open kitchen. Her little intruder couldn’t have gone anywhere else but out the front door. If the little girl had come towards the bedroom or office she would have seen her.

Ada rested the umbrella against the wall and opened the front door, the door that she didn’t lock and scolded herself for not doing so. The long dim hallway stood empty. Halloween decorations adorned her neighbors’ doors, reminding her of Hallow Eve’s Day. Kids were out trick-or-treating, reveling in their sweet treats. Despite so, she couldn’t help but wonder if she was an easy victim of a Halloween prank by a neighbor’s disobedient child. She remembered seeing three kids on her floor, and one of them being a little girl. Would that same little girl come in here and dare do such thing? But how could the girl have turned on the music that didn’t exist on her playlist?

Closing the door, she turned the lock and made a mental note of it for next time. She had a habit of forgetting such little but important details. Several steps toward the office, she acknowledged her wrong assumption. She listened to the light footsteps coming from inside the bedroom. A little girl’s chuckle taunted her and meddled with her patience. She had enough. Whoever’s child this was needed to be reprimanded by the mother for trespassing.

Her rushed footsteps entered the bedroom where she expected to find the little girl. But no sight of her. Ada eyed the portal to her clothes. She remembered hiding inside closets as a little girl.

“I know you’re in there.”

She reached for the door. No little girl hid behind the hanging clothes. Pushing the door back, her throat tightened and body tensed when she felt her shirt tugged from behind. Finding courage, she turned around but saw no one. Then the bedroom door slammed shut and she jolted, the scare wreaking havoc on her heart.

“Ring Around the Rosie” emanated from the living room and the tone of the child singer turned malicious. Ada felt a chill that felt like death and it magnetized the hairs on her goosebumps. A heavy force set upon her lanky body and stopped her in her tracks as she ran for the door. The light in the room morphed into a fiery glow, playing tricks on her eyes. The oval mirror whispered her name, inviting her over. Compelled to look into the mirror, she sauntered towards it and gazed into her own brown eyes. Paralyzed, she couldn’t scream or tear away from her own grinning image. She knew not one muscle fiber of her face helped her wear that ominous smirk. She ached to break free, run away and hide from her mirror image.

The music slowed in the background, the repetitive lyrics flowed out as though each word meant to linger. The invisible girl taunted her prey with maddening chuckles from behind and waited…

In the mirror Ada’s eyes darkened like black buttons and her complexion mottled. Her ears tuned in to the child’s malevolent voice.

Ring around the Rosie

Ada’s neck and face developed red rings, rosy bumps.

Pocket full of Posies

The citrus aroma dissipated and replaced with a foul, rotting smell.

Ashes, Ashes

Ada’s lung burned and she wheezed. Her eyes dilated as though they were going to pop. Her flesh felt volcanic and the rotten air suffocated her.

We all Fall Down

Ada collapsed on the floor, a loud thud. A little blond girl manifested with empty eyes and smiled down on her as she fell into darkness.

Bacon’s Tales of Terror

Welcome my spooky friends to another edition of Bacon’s Tales of Terror.  They say that a picture can say a thousand words… sometimes eerie ones at that.  For instance, just sitting down to dinner can be interesting to say the least.  Talking about your day might sometimes not be with just your family.

Do you see anything in this picture?  How many ‘people’ do you see?  Three or maybe four?  The next time you sit down to the table, are you going to leave out a chair for someone that might want to visit… someone that miss their own family?

Oh and new friends to my blog.  This is just a taste of my 31 Days of Spook coming up in October.  Every day in October, I post something eerie and strange.  My Bacon’s Tales of Terror comes around every month on the 13th.

Bacon’s Tales of Terror

Welcome my friends to my Bacon’s Tales of Terror.  Today, I have another true story.  Something that happened to my mom that I want to share with you.  Are you ready?  Do you think you can stand the chills and bumps?  Here’s my hoof if you need to hold it sweet friends.

Do you remember several months when we had the awful news that Mouse Girl had passed away here at the Hotel Thompson?  You can read about it here.  This happened so out of the blue.  Mouse Girl was fine and then she was not.  The day that mom/dad came home from the vet’s office, they were both just torn apart.  Mom had called Fozziemom and they were talking about what happened.  This is where it gets weird and strange.  During their conversation, I was in the front room with mom along with Houdini and Hemi.  There was a kitty that started meowing out of the blue.  It was so strong and so loud that even Fozziemom heard it and asked about it.  Mom was looking straight at Hemi and it was not him.  The meow was strong and loud – like an adult kitty.  Everyone was bewildered.

Mom went to the front door and looked outside.  On the porch she saw a kitty perhaps just a couple of weeks old and the strong meowing was coming from that kitty.  Mom told Fozziemom she was going to investigate and would call her back.  Mom went straight outside perhaps only a couple of minutes went by from mom seeing the kitty, hanging up and going outside.  That’s when she found it – nothing.  No kitty. Nada.  Not even a trace.  What the heck?!

Our neighbor Big Daddy was sitting out front.  Mom asked him if (A) he heard it or (B) he saw it.  He saw and heard nothing which was odd because the kitty was right there.  Mom then asked the kids that were playing in front of the house if they heard or saw the kitty.  Nope.  This kitty was gone in less than 60 seconds – vanished.  Mom searched around the front yard, around the bushes and nothing.

The kitty has never been seen or heard again since this date.  Now is that weird or what?    Was it Mouse Girl saying goodbye?  Thoughts?

Bacon’s Tales of Terror

Welcome my friends to another edition of Bacon’s Tales of Terror.  I hope you didn’t get too scared with my 31 Days of Spook.  And to think – I saved a really good true story for today.  Something that my little brother Houdini and my mommy saw happen right here at the Hotel Thompson.  Are you afraid yet?  Well if not, come closer to the computer screen for a really great story.  My mom is going to tell it… are you ready?

.

There we were a couple of weeks ago here at the Hotel Thompson.  It had been one of those weeks that rain and fog was taken over the area.  You know the rain and fog I’m talking about – the cold drizzly kind that falls like icicles down the back of your neck when you are running from the car to the house. All I wanted to do was get home, make a fire, fix dinner and then go to bed.  What a day.

And that’s what I did in that order.  After everyone was fed, we had a little quiet time together and then it was bedtime with stories and tucking in for the anipals.  Me and the hub were finally able to hit the bed ourselves.  By the time the hub’s head hit his pillow, he was out like a light for the night.  I however had problems of tossing and turning while listening to the rain hit the bedroom windows.  After a while, sleep finally found me.

Then something woke me.  I wasn’t sure what it was at first so I just remained where I was and listened.  I heard Houdini whimpering in his room.  That was so unlike him.  I gave him a few minutes in case he was dreaming but it didn’t stop.  And it sounded like he was right at his bedroom door and not in his bed where I put him.  I got up to check on him and we went into the living room for a while.

I kept all of the lights off except the small little night light in the hallway.  We sat on the sofa, Houdini in my arms and me comforting him by gently rocking.  A few minutes went by and something caught my eye.  The sofa overlooks our big front room windows over the porch.  I looked again to see what it was that I had seen.  Silently I watched, gently rocking Houdini and waited.  Then it happened again.  A shadow of a person or something that walked in front of the windows towards the front door.  WTH?!

Not only did I see it, so did Houdini.  He bounced off of me, ran across the room and started barking like crazy.  I got up and silently tip toed over to the door.  I gently pulled the curtain to the side to see who was out there.  Nobody.  Nothing.  No one.  And then it dawned on me.  There’s a security light on the front porch.  If someone had ‘walked’ on the front porch like we had seen, the light would have went on.  It didn’t.  Was I seeing things?  If so, then Houdini was too.

After a few minutes, Houdini quit barking.  He crawled back up in my lap on the sofa and went to sleep.  I on the other hand did not.  I sat and wondered about exactly what did we see?

Have you ever had something like this happen?
