Travels in the South

Oh boy, has daddy got a good one today for you my friends.  For obvious reasons, I’m going to let daddy explain his choice to you – snorts with piggy laughter.

Thank you Bacon – now you scoot along and be a good piggy.  You certainly do not need to see this.

Hello friends – Look at this burger!  Can you say in the famous words of Bacon, “Oh my piggy heavens?!”

On a recent outing with the wife, I came across the burger.  The menu called it The Boss.  I nicknamed it The Caveman.  It was *almost* too much for even me to handle… but I did.

The pictures don’t do it justice – it is HUGE!

Are you asking yourself what is in this creation?  There is a hamburger patty on the bottom, topped by smoked brisket, tender rib meat, jalapeno cheddar smoked sausage, bacon and cheddar.

I could barely wrap my hands around this burger.  And once I did get my hands around it, I wouldn’t dare put it down because it would fall apart on me.  And that my friends would be horrible.

So I picked it up and dug in.  This burger was so piled with goodies inside that they kept falling out and onto my tray.

And see those french fries on my plate.  I’m sure they would have been good but I had no room left to enjoy them.

And if the sandwich was that big, do you think I could wrap my mouth around it?  Barely – that is the word – barely!

And it was good until the last bite!

National Cheese Doodle Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –

Today, March 5, is National Cheese Doodle Day. This is totally awesome. Everyone likes cheese doodles – from humans to animals. They are made with cornmeal that has been puffed, baked and coated with a wonderful cheddar cheese. Some even have white cheese these days. Do you know who invented the cheese doodle? It was Morrie Yahai in the 1940’s. After serving as a Marine in World War II, he returned to his home in the Bronx and took over the family business – a snack food company called Old London Foods.

During the 1960’s, the Wise Foods Inc acquired the company and here you go – they are now part of the potato chip division of snacks. And did you know that in the Wise Foods, cheese doodles are one of the strongest brands and they produce over 15 million pounds of cheese doodles every year!

Even the pig enjoys his cheese doodles. Do you want to see? Okay – here you go. Enjoy this fine video that Bacon’s mom made back in the day. Roll tape –

Travels in the South

Living in the south, there are lots of comfort foods. But sometimes on a cold and rainy day, you want something that soothes your soul. Mom’s choice for that is grits with cheddar cheese and crumbled up turkey sausage. It’s hot, gooey and delicious. I hear your naysayers turning your nose up at grits. But let me tell you something. When done right like this, grits can be delicious! 😋

Travels in the South

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I agree.  Mom has fixed me omelettes for breakfast and dinner.  However, I’ve never had an omelette like this one before.  It seems mom likes something called a Colorado Omelette.  It has all kinds of wonderful yummy stuff in it – some things I can’t mention because well I’m an oinker and it wouldn’t be good for me so I’m letting mom take it from here.

For obvious reasons – this omelette is loaded.  Loaded with goodness that is.  It has bacon, sausage, shredded beef, ham, onions, green peppers, mushrooms and cheddar cheese.  And let’s not forget to top off that deliciously wonderful omelette with salsa.  Yum.  Have you ever had an omelette topped with salsa?  It just brings so much more to the table.

National Cheeseburger Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!

Friends – friends – friends.  You won’t believe what today is.  Today is National Cheeseburger Day.  Can you believe that?!  Now I’ll tell you a secret at the Hotel Thompson.  Who lives at the Hotel Thompson and loves to eat cheeseburgers of all kinds, shapes and/or sizes?  If you guessed Bacon’s dad, YOU are so right!

I think Bacon’s dad has like an endless tummy or maybe multiple tum-tum’s like a cow.  Yeah, that could be it!  Of course, he has gotten better in his age… something about not being able to eat like he once did.  But he still loves a good juicy burger.

Did you know that cheeseburgers can be dated back to the 1920’s?  In 1928, a cheeseburger officially made it to the menu of O’Dell’s which is a restaurant in Los Angeles, California.  It was on the menu listed as a cheeseburger smothered with chili.  Can you guess in 1928 how much the burger cost?  Would you believe 25 cents!?  Nowadays, look at the prices of a good juicy burger.  It will surely set you back a good $10.00!  In the 1930’s, the founder of Steak n’ Shake Gus Belt actually applied for a trademark on the word cheeseburger.

Do you know what the top 4 cheeses for a cheeseburger are?  1) American Cheese  2) Cheddar Cheese  3) Swiss Cheese and finally 4) Pepper Jack

I guess they didn’t ask us here in the south how we like our burgers topped with cheese.  Of course, we would say with Pimento Cheese and Bacon!

Travels in the South

Welcome my friends to another edition of Travels in the South.  Today I want to share something with you that my mom recently found.  She was so intrigued by this that she had to buy a bag for her and dad to try.  They are cashews which are already yummy.  But these cashews are roasted with blueberries, cranberries and quinoa (which mom has always wanted to try).  Mom and dad had one word to explain the taste.  Are you ready for that one word?  Here is goes – YUMMY!   Mom found these at the local Cracker Barrel restaurant.  If you have a Cracker Barrel in your area, pick yourself up a bag.  They are so very tasty!

Travels in the South

For obvious reasons today – snorts/oinks/coughs – I’m giving todays Travels in the South edition over to mom.  TAKE IT AWAY MOM!

Bacon – You might want to cover your ears and eyes for today’s edition.

Friends – we have found a really unique sandwich at our local Sonny’s Barbeque Restaurant.  What is it you ask?  They call this The Smokin’ Gun.  Look at that deliciousness.  Here is what is in it:  Jalapeno cheddar hot links, chopped brisket, banana peppers and red onions topped with a sweet mustard sauce on a bun.  It’s really not that hot – mom/dad both loved it for it’s uniqueness and taste.  And of course for obvious reasons we can’t eat it at home.  But it is way yummy!

If you have a Sonny’s Barbeque Restaurant in your area, you may want to check it out.

Travels in the South

Welcome my friends to another edition of Travels in the South.  As you know, my mom/dad are foodies.  And one of dad’s favorite foods is pizza.  And don’t think that the south doesn’t make good pizza.  Dad believes that the South is right up there with some of the best places when it comes to good pie.  And when mom/dad go out for a good pizza, they always get more than enough so that they can have leftovers for the next couple of days.  Mom likes to think of these meals as “Meals that keep on giving.”  Plus it means she doesn’t have to cook, smart huh?

img_8291So mom/dad went this past weekend to one of their favorite pizza places.  Once there, mom saw that they had cajun french fries.  Now, that’s way up her ally – the mommy LOVES french fries.  Not just any fries – they have to be extra crispy.  You know – no wimpy limpy fries on mom’s plate – snorts with piggy laughter.  They have to have standablility when it comes to dunking them in ketchup.  Mom is weird like that and trust me – over time it has ran over to daddy.  So they started with these delicious fries that had just a bit of kick but not overpowering kick.  Mom called them awesome and said that she could have eaten the entire basket.  But she didn’t.  She was a good girl and split them with the daddy.

Then it came time to ordering the main event.  Dad went for the pan crust meat lovers with cheddar crust and mom went for the hand tossed pepperoni lovers pretzel crust.  Now even this oinker has to admit that these pies look awesome.  Oh and mom/dad always get their pizza double cut and light sauce.  What do you think about these masterpieces?  Do you like pizza?  What are your favorite toppings?

And remember what I said about meals that keep on giving?  Both pizzas, french fries, two sodas and tip came to $20.34.  Now, take that price and divided by three meals (cause they have dinner Monday and Tuesday night) and you come up with $6.78 per night = that’s only $3.39 per person for fabulous eats.
