Are you asking yourself, “Self, just what is this creation on Bacon’s Travels in the South this week?” I’m glad you asked my friends. See last week for dad’s birthday, he wanted to go to our local Bojangles where he wanted to try this creation. Now I’m going to let mom describe what it is… she says I don’t need to know what’s inside of it. I think we all knows what that means.
This fabulous looking bowl is called the Pulled Pork Bowl. It starts with Bojangle’s spicy Cajun pintos, then they add a sweet and smoky sauce along with pulled pork and topped with cole slaw. Even I was questioning if this would be good or not. In fact, I tried not to like the taste I got out of the hub unit’s bowl.. but I couldn’t help myself. It was delicious!
So if you have a Bojangles in the area, stop in and try this creation – I think you’ll like it too 🙂

For obvious reasons today – snorts/oinks/coughs – I’m giving todays Travels in the South edition over to mom. TAKE IT AWAY MOM!
Bacon – You might want to cover your ears and eyes for today’s edition.
Friends – we have found a really unique sandwich at our local Sonny’s Barbeque Restaurant. What is it you ask? They call this The Smokin’ Gun. Look at that deliciousness. Here is what is in it: Jalapeno cheddar hot links, chopped brisket, banana peppers and red onions topped with a sweet mustard sauce on a bun. It’s really not that hot – mom/dad both loved it for it’s uniqueness and taste. And of course for obvious reasons we can’t eat it at home. But it is way yummy!
If you have a Sonny’s Barbeque Restaurant in your area, you may want to check it out.

Welcome my friends to another edition of Travels in the South. Being in the south, we do have some great barbecue restaurants that come up with some wonderful creations. This is something that we have actually highlighted here before. In fact, when our friends Bill and Jean (with Canadian Cats) came for a visit, we introduced them to these as well. Every once in a while, we crave these… and it helps that mom had a coupon for a free appetizer. 🙂
Let me introduce you my friends. These are called Redneck Egg Rolls. The restaurant takes egg roll wrappers and adds slow smoked pulled pork, coleslaw and jack cheese. They then deep fry the egg rolls until they are crispy. They are served with a ranch dipping sauce but mom/dad like to eat them with a spicy barbecue sauce. They are hot, delicious, gooey and you will crave more and more! Just ask Bill and Jean. They will tell you.
So when in the South, eat barbecue Redneck Egg Rolls. ❤

Today, we are going to step back and reminisce over a great meal with some great friends, Bill and Jean from Canadian Cats. If you remember, they visited us here at the Hotel Thompson earlier this year in February. Well I came across some pictures that were taken that mom/dad forgot to share. After you see this pictures, you will understand why mom/dad didn’t share them with me. In fact, I’m going to let mom take it from here so I don’t have to discuss this. I’m sure you will understand. Take it away mommy!
“Thanks Bacon. For obvious reasons friends, you will understand why Bacon didn’t want to be any part of today’s Travels in the South. I do have to say that owning a shall we call P.I.G. it does make it difficult to partake in some foods here at the Hotel Thompson. For those obvious reasons, when the need kicks in to eat pork we go out. And yes, we have had conversations with Bacon that he is definitely not that kind of pig – thank goodness.
When Bill an
d Jean visited, there is a really good barbeque restaurant near us that the hub unit likes to visit from time to time. I mean come on, you know sometimes you get the *need* for delicious food. We took Jean and Bill to this restaurant.
The first course was an appetizer of “Redneck Egg Rolls”. Okay we are in the south and it was appropriate, right? They take egg roll sheets, fill them with smoked pulled pork, homemade cole slaw and jack cheese. Then they deep fry them until they are golden brown. They serve them with a smokey ranch dipping sauce. Can you say yum? These are good, crispy and really you will want more. The hub unit just can’t get enough.

Then no one could really decide what to get so we ordered the feast for four. It came with the works – slice pork, ribs, chicken and brisket. Then don’t forget all of the sides – french fries, cole slaw, baked beans and garlic toast. No way was the plate emptied by the time everything was done. But I will tell you this – we walked away with full bellies and not just from the food.
We laughed. We talked. We spoke of the past. We spoke of the future. Sometimes there was even silence. Not bad silence. The kind of silence you get with great friends when everyone is happy and feeling so loved.
Just because you are out of sight from the ones you love, it doesn’t mean you are out of our thoughts. We look forward to the next time sweet friends ❤ “

Hello friends. I hope that you have been enjoying our Travels in the South edition. Today, we continue our adventures with Fozziemom and Fozziedad who visited all the way from Australia. Today, I want to focus on a restaurant that everyone went to on their way back home from Tybee Island. Also this is a restaurant that Jean and Bill visited while they were visiting as well.
It’s a place that my mom has been going to since she she was small child. She actually introduced my dad to it and it’s a great feel at home kind of place.
This restaurant is called Buckner’s Family Restaurant and has wonderful vegetables (for our vegetarians) and the best fried chicken you will ever wrap your lips around – just sayin’ so says mom – snorts. Which brings me to the chicken in the picture – his name is Elmer and he’s a pretty cool dude. His tall – really tall and his sign says do not touch… Personally I think too many people in the past have wanted to get up close and personal to him to have their pictures taken if you know what I mean.
.
Now you see the cool thing about this place is all of the tables are round. Okay I can see you going okay and what’s a big deal about that. Well you see in the middle of the round table, they have the biggest movable section – a giant lazy Susan if you will. The workers will come to your table with all of these bowls containing wonderful delights – creamed corn, green beans, beats, cole slaw , lima beans, rolls, chicken, barbeque pork, peach cobbler – just to name a few. And as you eat and things run out, you just ask for refills and the servers gladly fill everything back up. So you have a buffet without having to get up and down all of the time. You sit and the staff bring YOU the food. Cool huh?
Now you have to remember that everyone stopped here on the way home from Tybee Island. They were tired, exhausted if you will, and at the point of just being silly. The moms didn’t even have make up on. So, I’m tell you that in preparation for this final picture. A picture to show you (A) how tired they looked and (B) how silly they were being trying to get a picture with Elmer. So here you go my friends – the moms in their bare necessities.

Uh-oh my friends. I may be in trouble… or is it my parents that are in trouble? I’m telling you – my humans can NOT be trusted to go out into public by themselves. They left yesterday to run errands and came home with this creation – Bone Suckin’ Sauce . As if that’s not bad enough did you read the bottom of the bottle? Now thicker style. Rolls piggy eyes. Trouble I’m telling you – TROUBLE.
I overheard mom/dad talking about fixing chicken today on the grill with this sauce. I’ll keep you posted on to how it turns out.

Sometimes I’ll admit it – my mom/dad scare me. No, not the BOO kind of scare. The kind of scare when I go looking for mom’s pictures on her iPhone kind of scare. Take in point the picture below. Mom/dad what the heck were you thinking? See, this is the kind of trouble that happens when mom/dad go out unchaperoned. They don’t need to look for trouble – trouble finds THEM.
Rub Some Butt, Three Little Piggies BBQ Rub, Bone Suckin’ Sauce and Sweet Rub of Mine – really? Do I need to even ask where this ‘stuff’ needs to go? Dad don’t even think about coming my way with any of these bottles in your hand. I may need to ask for an intervention here at the Hotel Thompson. Daddy was too quick to let me know that some of these traveled to our house here. I haven’t seen them and Lord knows I don’t wanna.
Help me? Snorts and Oinks …. while I still can.

NOTE: I know I’m safe my friends. No worries here at the Hotel Thompson. Mommy wouldn’t let anything happen to me for anything in the world. No need to call PETA… yet 🙂

As you read here, Tuesday, 07/29/2014, was National Chicken Wing Day. A local restaurant here called Hooters on Tara was having a special on all you can eat chicken wings that day. Mommy promised to take daddy so he could show them what he has – snorts. First off let me throw some shout outs to Keisha who was our waitress (you were AWESOME!) and to Mike the manager. Mike has helped us out here on my blog in the past when Rockelle and Benedict went on a date a while back. Mike’s awesome!

So when mom got off of the worky place, she rushed home in Albert and picked up daddy. Daddy in preparation had walked 2 miles and had a ‘light breakfast’. He had his game face on and was ready. Mom picked him up and off they went to the Hooters on Tara.
I was able to get these pictures all off of mom’s iPhone. Be prepared to be astonished my dear friends.
One of dad’s favorite things in the world are tater tots. And just fortunately mom had a coupon for a free appetizer at Hooters – thanks Hooters – so they got this amazing tater tot appetizer to the right. Doesn’t it look amazing!? That’s tater tots covered with gooey cheese, onions, sour cream and bacon. Daddy didn’t tell me about that bacon until I saw this picture. Tsk-tsk bad daddy!
Then the fun started. They would bring you 10 wings at a time – whatever flavor you wanted. These are pictures of dad’s platters. Picture to the left – medium breaded. They have just a little zip to them as far as heat when you eat them. Picture in the middle – Cajun breaded. They have a zip of a different kind. This zip is from the Cajun spices and are probably dad’s favorites. Then the picture to the right – BBQ breaded. These are M.E.S.S.Y. I don’t care how many wet wipes or napkins you have to clean up with, you are going to be wearing these. In fact, dad jumped in and wouldn’t wipe down until he was finished with these. Mommy said that at one point, she thought she was going to have to take him out front and hose him down – snorts.

So you’re calculating to yourself thinking well played daddy – he had 30 wings. You would be wrong my friends. Mommy couldn’t finish one of her plates. She had 13 – daddy called her a wussy. I’m not sure what that means. That left 7 off of mom’s plate though and dad ate them. I told you watch out Joey Chestnut! Drum roll please – dad ate 37 wings! 57.14% of you voted on Tuesday saying that daddy would eat more than 21 – you were right!

So you would think that’s the end of the story. Daddy ate to his heart’s content and put away 37 chicken wings. Nope. I gotta add my two cents now – snorts. Daddy was miserable. Can you say Tums and Pepto Bismol? Those were his two close friends when he got back to the Hotel Thompson. Can you say multiple trips to the facilities here all.night.long? Snorts – I think he finally admitted it to mom last night – he’s not as young as he once was. Mom and dad both are eating so light today it’s not funny. I think they are calling for salads all around for dinner for the rest of the week. In fact, when daddy got up this morning he told mommy, “I’m surprise I haven’t coughed feathers or squawked like a chicken”. Snorts – silly daddy!
But don’t worry my friends. I think dad is entering an all you can eat biscuits and gravy competition this weekend – snorts.
