Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here – Keeping my paws on the nuts of the world!
Of all of the important holidays I can tell you about, today seems to be the most important in my book. It is International Day of Friendship. The world is filled with too much hate, too many wars, too much prejudice and way too many disagreements. Today, we should put all of that aside and reach out to each other and say, “Hello friend happy friendship day!”
This is just not a backyard problem or a school playground problem. This is a worldwide problem. A problem that needs to come to an end. Everyone has differences – we wouldn’t be individuals if we didn’t. But when you look down to it, we all want to be happy and what better way than to get along.
Today let’s make friends with different people, different cultures and different countries. Extend your hand – or an olive branch – and say hello friend. Say hello to your neighbor, to the stranger at the market and say hello to a person that you see everyday but you don’t even know their name. Today is the day to make a friend near and far.
To all of our friends, we at the Hotel Thompson would like to say thank you for being our friend – happy friendship day. And to those that don’t know us yet, Happy Friendship Day. May we get to know you better today and in the future!
Who will YOU say hello friend to today?

Spotlight Thursday
Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY. This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better. Some of them, you may already know. We hope that you enjoy this series!
Name: Andy and Dougy
Age: Five (we are from the same litter, born July 1, 2011.)
Location: Alliance, Nebraska
Web/Blog Page: Weggieboyg’s Blog

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents? [Dougy] We have only one, but he was very kind to us! The biggest surprise was the water fountain that we barely were tall enough to use, but we still use that kind of fountain, which gives us filtered, tasty water whenever we want it!
What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home? [Andy] It had to be when I had to go to the veterinarian’s clinic to be treated for an intestinal parasite all of us kittens got when we ate an infected grasshopper. My brother Dougy was there and I was really happy to see him again! We played together all the time and had a great time. When it was time to come back to the human’s place, he brought Dougy with us, too, and that was when I knew I was home at last! [Dougy] Yes, my other littermates and I were still at the veterinarian’s with our mother when Andy was taken home. He was there only a few days when the human was concerned he wasn’t thriving. He called the lady who had our mother and brothers and sister (three boys; one girl) to let her know he was concerned Andy might not live. She offered to pick him up and bring him to the clinic (where she worked!), which she did. I was really, really, really happy to see Andy again! When the lady (who knew our human wanted a second cat for a companion for Andy) took me out to the front desk to ask our human if he wanted me, too, I could tell by his expression that he already loved me, too. That was when i knew I was going to have a new permanent home!
What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home? Andy & Dougy together: Ha! Ha! We get away with murder! [Andy] Dougy even destroys furniture with his scratching. [Dougy] Andy is a Mr. Goody Two Shoes, but, then, he’s named after the patron saint of Scotland, St. Andrew.
Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? Andy & Dougy: We have only one human to buffalo! [Andy] He feels sorry for me because I am so serious and good! [Dougy] He thinks I’m a comedian, which, of course, I am! I am particularly funny to him when I clean up because I stop and stare at him briefly as if I’m telling him “What’s the matter? Haven’t you ever seen a cat lick himself before?” Don’t know! I guess you have to see my performance to appreciate it!
What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you? [Andy] That we need to be lap cats when really all we expect from them is to feed us, play wand toy games with us, brush us, leave us alone when we aren’t in the mood to be touched, and “scritch” us the way we like to be “scritched” when we are in the mood to be toughed! I personally like being “scritched” in the little spot between my eyes I can’t reach safely with my claws…..! [Andy goes into a swoon thinking about it, and Dougy, strangely quiet other than a soft purring as he thinks about that wonderful “between the eyes scritch” he also loves, loves, loves!]

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY. This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better. Some of them, you may already know. We hope that you enjoy this series!
Name: Steinbeck and Hemingway
Age: 3 months and 6.5 years
Location: Bloomington, Minnesota

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents? We only have a mom but I was so excited when I saw her come up to my cage at the Humane Society. I was with some siblings but she spotted me right away. We went into a room so we could play together. Her girlfriend was with her and she took some pictures of us. Both of them decided I was the perfect choice so she took me to my forever home.
I was in the middle of a large room in a very large kennel. When I saw mom walking towards me, I ran to the front of the cage to greet her. She told the people she wanted me and they said she had to spend some time with me first. I didn’t mind so when we went into a special room, the two of us played and I climbed all over mom. She didn’t change her mind and told the Human Society people that she wanted me. I sang the song of my people all the way home with her. She said she drove lots and lots of miles to get me so I just sang how happy I was.
What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home? Mom let me out of the carrier and I knew instantly that it was my forever home. There was a doggie who looked like me and she gave me welcoming greetings. I used to sleep with her. She was old and finally went over the Rainbow Bridge. I still miss her.
When I first got h
ome, Mom kept me in her bedroom ‘cuz she wanted to introduce me to my big brother slowly. After a few days when she was getting ready to go to work one morning, she decided to trust me and leave me loose. That’s when I knew I was home. I was able to explore and take naps all over the place. I was finally able to keep my brother company.
What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home? Mom say’s I’m great at knocking things off of shelves, tables and desks. When I want her attention, that’s the only way I can get it. Mom says she’s had to redecorate ‘cuz she can’t have certain things displayed the way she would like.
I had an “ut oh” moment just the other day. I pulled the runner off the entertainment center and the small lamp came crashing down. I broke it. I was sorry.
Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? I have mom wrapped around my paws. She lives with her brother and I’ve actually wormed my way into his heart too. He likes to give me tummy rubs.
Oh, I have everyone wrapped around my paws!! Just look at my face. Who could resist?
What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you? Humans think I’m going to squash them if I jump on them ‘cuz I’m such a big kitty. They don’t need to worry ‘cuz I only jump on mom and she’s getting used to it.
Humans think that because I’m so little I don’t know stuff. I know lots of stuff and I keep learning more each day! I learned my name quickly. Sometimes though, I think my name is Steinbeck No!

Spotlight Thursday
Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY. This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better. Some of them, you may already know. We hope that you enjoy this series!
Name: Kona
Age: 7
Location: Southern California
Web/Blog Page: http://tailsbythesea.wordpress.com/
What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents? I had been pulled out of a high-kill shelter in San Diego by Second Chance Dog Rescue and was living with my foster parents. My adopting mom walked in the door to meet me, and I walked up to her, stood on my hind legs, and put my paws on her chest. When she sat down, I walked over to her and put my head in her lap. The foster mom told my mom that I had never approached anyone like that before, and that this dog had made his choice. I knew this was going to be my mommy, and I let her know it!
What was th
e defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home? A few days after I came to my new home, mom and I were at the dog park. I was playing with a group of dogs, running around and having fun, when I stopped and looked around for my mom. I couldn’t find her, and got scared. She was watching me, and when we made eye contact, I smiled and ran towards her, just like in those love story movies 🙂 She and I both bonded at that moment – we both remember it clearly.
What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home? I had never had an accident in the house, and was proud of it. One day, while mom was at work, I had a bad tummy ache and couldn’t hold it. I felt soooo bad when mom got home and saw my boo boo, my head was down and she just gave me a hug and cleaned it up. She knew I didn’t mean to do it.
Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why? I think I have my mommy wrapped more. She and I are so closely bonded, and when I give her my sad look, her heart hurts. On the other side of that, I come and sit close to her when she’s hurting, too.
What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you? My daddy sometimes thinks that I automatically understand human behavior. In other words, he gets mad at me cuz I don’t automatically know how to do things, or I don’t understand why I’m being punished. Mom has to remind him that I’m a dog, and dogs need to be trained, and it takes time. He’s getting better, though. Mom says I’m teaching him patience 🙂

Today, July 24th, is National Parents Day. Everyone has a parent – 🙂 Today is a special day to honor your mother and father – biological or adopted. I know Bacon appreciates the time he spent with his biological mother and father. If it wasn’t for them, he wouldn’t have the great parents he has today. Bacon’s biological parents wished nothing but the best for him and I think he has it here at the Hotel Thompson with his human mom/dad.
All of us here at the Hotel Thompson are all very lucky to have mom/dad. There’s so much love!
Today, National Parents Day, brings the real meaning of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Spend some time with your parents doing something fun and most important showing them how much they are loved and appreciated.
And did you know that this day was made official in 1994 by President Bill Clinton who proclaimed that the fourth Sunday in July as National Parents Day!

Today, June 19th, is just a special day – it’s Father’s Day!! I have to say happy Father’s Day to my biological father, Champ. If it wasn’t for him and my mom, Bertha, I wouldn’t be here with my adopted family at the Hotel Thompson. So Happy Father’s Day Champ!
And then, my adopted dad. What can I say? He adopted me when I was a small tyke – I could barely walk! I knew nothing about life at a mere three weeks. I was still on formula and had to be taught everything. Do you know to this day, dad takes care of me during the day? While mom is at the worky place, dad makes sure that I get all of my nutritional food and that I’m happy until mom gets home. Isn’t that great? I guess you could call him my pigdad.
So, for today dad don’t worry about anything. Me, the purr things and mom will handle it at the Hotel Thompson. Heck, mom even said something about fixing your favorite food… and that I might get a taste. Hey – it’s a win win situation today!
Enough of the seriousness though. Let’s talk Bacon – oink chuckles. Just for today dad, you can sit back on the sofa, enjoy your television and have the remote. You don’t have to utter one word… especially the phrases I’ve heard you say around here. Oh, you look shocked. Let me remind you of some of the phrases – PLOL (Pig Laughing Out Loud). How many have you heard from your fathers?
Just because I love you doesn’t mean I have to like everything you do.
Because I’m the Dad, that’s why!
I brought you into this world, and I can take you out!
I’m a Dad, I know everything.
The sooner you learn to stand on your own two feet, the better off you’ll be. – which never makes sense to me since I have four feet – shakes piggy head
That’s just the way life is, son.
You make a better door than a window!
Were you born In a Barn? well, yes I was
Do you think money grows on trees? technically, it does 🙂
I haven’t developed gray hairs for nothing!
You are too young to understand this.
And my favorite all time one liner from dad –
Go ask your mother….. perfect… I will 🙂
Happy Father’s Day to all of my friends!!
