Texts from Bacon

You know fellow anipals sometimes it is hard taking care of our humans.  Trying to make sure they are doing okay, not stressed, eating well.  It’s a full time job!  Just like this morning I had to check on my mom.  She has been changing her way of eating but this time of the year, shaking my piggy head, it’s tough for anyone.  My texts are in blue and mom’s are in white.

Earth Day

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping his paws on the nuts of the world –

.

April 22nd is EARTH DAY.  Every year, more than 1 billion people in 175 countries will participate in various Earth Day events on this date.  It is the largest civic observance in the world.  The purpose is to raise awareness about important environmental issues.

The first Earth Day took place in 1970.  After witnessing the affects of an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, US Senator Gaylord Nelson organized a grassroots environmental teach in on college campuses across the country.  Many people believe that this first Earth Day celebration marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement.

Celebrate today – plant a tree, help clean up a beach or park and/or participate in an event near you.  Help to keep this world a better place for everyone!

And a little blast from the past you might remember that deals with Earth Day – Captain Planet and the Planeteers.  Do you remember this show?  It was an American animated environmental program created by Ted Turner, Robert Larkin III and Barbara Pyle.  It came out on September 15, 1990.

The basis of the program was set with Gaia – the spirit of the planet.  She is awakened by drilling which is above her resting chamber.  To control the damage, she sends out five magic rings to youths around the world who will become the Planeteers.

Kwame is from Africa and has the power of Earth with his ring.

Wheeler is from North America and has the power of Fire with his ring.

Linka is from the Soviet Union and has the power of Wind with her ring.

Gi is from Asia and has the power of Water with her ring.

Ma-Ti is from South America and has the power of Heart and telepathy with his ring.

All five can use their rings special powers to call the super hero – Captain Planet for help.

I think today would be the perfect day to check out this old classic of helping the environment!

Paw Time with Houdini

Barks!  Hello friends.  I hope you have had a wonderful week.  A lot of people ask us about our nightly routines here at the Hotel Thompson.  I wanted to share one with you on how I go to bed every night.  It usually starts on the sofa with my mommy with my favorite night time friend.  This night time friend is special to me.  My nana gave it to me and helps me have wonderful dreams at night.  How do you ask?  Well, I had mom take a video of me with it.  Hope you enjoy!

And now I leave you with Jokes with Daddy – have a great weekend!

Barks!  Now that I have your attention my friends, I must share something fabulous with you.  Something that is so exciting – something that I have been keeping a secret for two entire weeks.  And you know for a terrier to keep something a secret – that just blows your little doggy mind!  Okay – Okay – let me *try* to calm down for a minute and give you some back up information.  Some of you may remember reading about DOGtv on my weekly Paw Time with Houdini series.  If you missed it, you can check out my postings here and here.

I absolutely ❤ DOGtv.  I wrote them an email straight from my puppy heart.  And they extended all of my friends here two months of on-line subscription free when they sign up for one month at DOGtv using the code PIGLOVE at checkout.  It’s really a cool channel just made for us pooches.  I watch it every night before I go to bed.  It’s kind of like my nightly routine here at the Hotel Thompson.

Well friends, I want you to check out something that came out today on-line with the newspaper USA Today.  You will absolutely not believe who made it in the paper – coughs, barks, grunts and then smiles with happiness.  I’ve even copied the article below for your convenience.  Guess who is doing the happy dance at the Hotel Thompson?

I want to take this point to give a shout out to USA Today and Jueun Choi – barks you’re the best!

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Lucy Sandy

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Lucy Sandy (Nicknames: Lucy Goosey and Lucy Lou – so far )

Age:  1 year

Location:  Chattanooga (well, really Soddy Daisy, but no one knows where that is, including me) Chattanooga

Web/Blog Page:  www.lexitheschnauzer.com (because my Angel Lexi sister said it’s ok to use her blog)

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents? I was being taken somewhere called “the pound” when Amy saw me and said she would take me home with her. I thought maybe I was on vacation. I got good food and a soft couch and a nice dog bed. Then a man walked in and I cowered because I thought maybe he would hit me. But he knelt down and spoke very softly to me and I fell in love with him right then and there. His name is Jeff. I didn’t realize these were my new parents for a few days, so I was on my very best behavior.

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  Amy left me with another lady who took me to the vet’s and left me there. I went to sleep and when I woke up I had a big owie on my belly. I didn’t understand, and I thought she had left me there for good. The next day Amy came and took me back home. I think that’s when I realized that really was my home.

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   I had gotten comfortable in what I now knew was my home, and started “testing my boundaries,” according to Amy. I tried different places to pee and poop in the house and Amy just quietly cleaned it up. Then, one day, Amy called me over to an extra big pile of stinky stuff and pointed at it and told me, “No!” That really scared me. I mean, why didn’t she just tell me that to begin with? Once she explained it was not acceptable to potty in the house at all I stopped doing it.

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why?  Amy feeds me and plays with me and lets me out except in the morning when Jeff lets me out. So I think it is her.

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  Amy and Jeff call me an AmStaff. They don’t say the words Pit Bull because a lot of people are instantly scared. So, I guess it would be that I might bite them?? I really don’t understand that ’cause I like everybody and just want them to like me, too.

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

Travels in the South – Bacon Version

Let’s talk shall we.  I help mom/dad post all of the time with their Travels in the South and it’s about time I shared one of my own.  Right?  Can I get a snort-snort.  As some of you know, every morning for breakfast I get a cup of piggy chow and a little Cheerios to start my day.  All of us have to be a little heart smart these days.  Well over the weekend, mom found me something that was better than my normal oats Cheerios.  I know!  I didn’t think that was possible either.  I oinked and told her that she was wrong that nothing could ever – EVER – replace my morning Cheerios.  This pig has standards.

Let me tell you my friends – I was wrong!  Yep, you can repeat that in conversation.  I, Bacon, was wrong!  What mom got me was better than my oats Cheerios.  Why do you ask?  Because there’s one other thing in this world that I love more than life itself.  What is it my friends?  That’s right – strawberries.  I could eat my weight in them and trust me that’s a lot of weight.

Have you tried these marvelous strawberry Cheerios?  I’ve even caught daddy eating them out of my box.  Tsk-tsk daddy – get your own!  I haven’t had anything this good from Cheerios since they came out with Pumpkin Spice last year.  And yes I shared those with my mommy ❤  See I love mommy.

IF you see them in your market, BUY THEM ALL.  They are a limited edition and going FAST.  Tell them Bacon said so – snorts!

Travels in the South

Oh friends!  What a week it has been.  With mom recuperating from her car accident, we have all been trying to be nice to her.  After one doctors appointment last week, mom was craving some comfort food.  Nothing screams southern comfort more than this picture, right?  For those that don’t recognize that awesome glory, let me break it down for you.

Those two delightfully brown looking pieces on that plate, that would be boneless fried chicken.  You see chicken of any kind is like one of mom’s fall to foods when she is feeling really icky.  And personally I think these past couples of weeks qualified for just that.

Mom ordered the chicken with green beans, a side salad and white gravy on the side.  What was the gravy for?  Of course to dip that wonderful chicken into before eating it.  You’ve never done that before?  You are so hidden from southern comforts.  You must try it.

So you see mom didn’t do too bad but she sure felt better afterwards. ❤

National Animal Cracker Day!

Journalist Rocky the Squirrel here –

Keeping his paws on the nuts of the world

.

April 18th is National Animal Cracker Day.  Isn’t this fantastic!!  Elephants, lions, tigers, bears and monkeys oh my.  These are small little sweet cookies shaped like zoo animals.  They were first brought to the United States during the 1800’s.  The demand for these wonderful little cookies skyrocketed and demand was over the roof!

Stauffer’s Biscuit Company was the first company to produce animal crackers in 1871 in York, Pennsylvania.  Other local bakeries came together under the National Biscuit Company or “Nabisco Brands”.  In 1902, the famous Barnum’s Animals circus theme box came out.  Bacon’s mom says that she remembers her parents bringing her these little boxes as a treat.

20130312-101826.jpg

Did you know that since their start in 1903, there have been 37 different animals included in the Barnum’s Animal Crackers?  Today, more than 40 million packages of animal crackers are sold each year around the world.

I think Bacon does his share in the intake!  They are one of his biggest treats that his mom has to get him in the economy size!  I can’t tell you how many of these huge buckets that he has gone through in his day.  In fact, this one is what the Easter bunny brought him and it’s almost gone.  Time to reload.

So on this National Animal Cracker Day – enjoy a box OR TWO of these sweet delectable bits.  Just remember though, if you are going to eat in front of the pig, you have to share!

Dear Bacon

20130415-093642.jpg

Dear Bacon,

My master thinks he is so smart – bark bark.  He put things on the couch in order to make sure “I” wouldn’t get on the couch.  He forgot one thing though.  There is always the back of the couch – HA!  I’m not sure who was more surprised when he found me there – his face was priceless!  Signed One Smart K9

Dear One Smart K9,

That is too funny.  You are really smart.  I don’t know why the humans just don’t cater to us.  They know we are going to figure out the ways – You go pooch!

20130415-093732.jpgDear Bacon,

Does this look pitiful enough on my face?  This is my plead for, “Can you spare a cup of nuts my friend?”  It seems to work at times.  What do you think?  Signed Nut Collector

Dear Nut Collector,

AAWW that look is precious.  I know if you came to my door, my mom would let you have a cup of nuts… possible a safe dry place as well.  Bashful my pet rock gets that look sometimes when he wants things.  There’s just no way you can say no.

20130415-093759.jpg

Dear Bacon,

A lot of people are scared of me and I can’t understand why.  Don’t I have a likeable face?  I even try to smile more to make myself more personable.  Signed Smiling Liz

Dear Smiling Liz,

Your beautiful my friend.  It’s their loss if they can’t see that inner and outer beauty.  Keep smiling and doing your thing my friend!

20130415-093830.jpg

Dear Bacon,

Do you ever spend time in front of the mirror after you brush your teeth checking yourself out?  I just can’t help it.  This is my time when I practice my smile and winking my eyes.  Signed Vanity the Cat

Dear Vanity the Cat,

You know I do spend some time in front of the mirror.  I think we all need to at times.  I like to personally watch how I move my tail up and down and sideways.  You know cats move their tails with such elegance and I try to practice that to impress the purr things here.  Carry on!

20130415-093913.jpgDear Bacon,

Trouble in 3, 2 and 1.  The master caught us playing on the bed and thought it was hilarious.  You see, I’m not the one that initiates the trouble in this household – it’s the cat.  Always has been.  Do your cats cause this much trouble at the Hotel Thompson?  Signed Innocent Pooch

Dear Innocent Pooch,

Well, yes they do.  They are definitely the little instigators here at the Hotel Thompson.  They like to wiggle those long tails right in front of me to get my attention and then whine if I pull it.  And that Hemi with his extra digits, he likes to run by me and slap my little pig hiney.  Oh yeah, I can definitely relate to the trouble makers – snort.

IRS – Tax Day in the United States

Snorts – Tomorrow is the dreaded due date for the IRS tax day.  Post offices will be working overtime today and tomorrow making sure all tax submissions are dated on time.  Never fear though – mom and dad have already taken care of their taxes.  They are good for another year – YAY!

Who couldn’t resist a little funny on the deadline for submitting your taxes, April 18.  Mom and dad says this cartoon is way to truthful.  Enjoy!
