Dear Bacon

Dear Bacon – There is always that one sibling who just never smiles at the right time or large enough for the camera.  Here we are in Summer now and we are trying to get our Christmas cards made – notice lights in the background.  That’s when Stupid doesn’t want to smile.  Finally, I had to crawl on his back to give him a little help.  Shakes my kitty head.  Do you ever have to do the same with your siblings?  Signed CIC (Cat in Charge)

Dear CIC – Shaking my piggy head.  Well I guess that’s one way to do it my friend.  Help out your brother in his smiling for the camera.  I guess you are right about getting those cards done in time for Christmas. Maybe this weekend we can all get together here to get them done in time.  But I have to ask one question my friend.  Tell me that the dog’s name isn’t really Stupid.  Please say no.  Snorts with piggy laughter.

Dear Bacon –  I really don’t get all of this Netflix and chill stuff.  I mean heck I do it every night.  So can you tell me am I doing it right or wrong?  Signed Stud Muffin

Dear Stud Muffin – Well, it looks like you are doing it right to me.  You are watching Netflix and chilling with your popcorn.  I mean heck, you even have on your house shoes.  You can’t be chilling anymore than that.  And you are watching Netflix on your computer so you can still bounce around on the internet while listening.  Nope, I say that’s it.  Go for it my friend and be happy.

.

Dear Bacon – There I was in the house walking around at midnight and I just couldn’t sleep.  That’s when my humans did the most amazing thing.  They bundled me up and took me for a drive to help me sleep.  Within minutes, I was passed out on the stick shift.  What a terrific way to be rocked to sleep.  Signed Twinkle

Dear Twinkle – Oh My Pigs!  That does look amazing and what great parents you have to think of this and to gently rock you to sleep.  That is awesome!  I would say that your humans are definitely keepers in their way of taking care of their anipals.  Just do me a favor okay – don’t drool on the stick shift.

.

Dear Bacon – My human mom said she would play fetch with me.  She told me to go get one of my play toys.  Well I couldn’t decide which one to bring back so I did what any other anipal would do – I brought them all so she could pick one to play with.  Don’t you just love it when the humans play fetch with you?  Signed Decisions Too Big

Dear Decisions Too Big – I agree.  That is the only way to play with our toys.  Bring them all out and spread them all over the floor.  That is the way we can be sure which ones we want at the time.

REMEMBER MY FRIENDS – Dear Bacon can’t happen without YOU.  Please continue sending me your pictures and questions to my email address ♥

Bacon’s Show and Tell

Thanks to everyone that participated in my Bacon’s Show and Tell last month – did you have fun?  I know we did here at the Hotel Thompson. We absolutely LOVE these Show and Tell pictures and stories.

For this month – we want to know what was your all time favorite toy growing up.  Do you have a picture?  How long did you keep it?  What did this toy do?  Share the story of your favorite toy and what it meant to you my friends.

My moms favorite toy growing up was a game called Perfection.  You get a quick 60 seconds to place 25 pieces of various shapes and sizes into the correct spot. If you get them before your time is up, you win. If you don’t get them in time, all the pieces pop up all over the place scaring the beejeesus out of you… Well so mom says. Mom got really good at the game. So good in fact that she would get people she could do it for a $1.00 – so even then mom was working it – snorts with piggy laughter.

Memorial Day

20130507-222103.jpg

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. On this day, which occurs every year on the last Monday of May, we remember the men and women who have died while serving our country.

Many people on this day will visit cemeteries and memorials placing an American flag at graves to honor our fallen heroes. Let’s remember that appreciation is not only one day out of the year – it’s year round.

.

Thank you to all of those who have died while serving our great country! I think this picture says it all.

Not on My Watch

So today is the last full day that our guests are here.  That sucks.  I mean really it does.  We have all had such a fantastic time playing and laughing with them.  Last night we had a few friends over.

I lost my watch.  I know who would have thought that me as a pig would wear a watch but I do.  I gotta keep up with my social hour.  So at this party, I noticed my watch was gone.  Across the room, one of our guests had been drinking too much and I saw him starting to harass mom.  That’s when I noticed he was standing on my watch. The nerve of him.  I walked right up to him, snouted him in the chins and then hit him with my head knocking him over.  No one does that to my mom.  Not on my watch.  Snorts with piggy laughter.

Paw Time with Houdini

Hello Friends!  I just want you to know that this has been my normal picture all week – me watching mom/dad go with their friends all week.  Now, I’ve gotten extra snuggles, love and all kinds of treats.  But hey peeps – why don’t you take me for a ride in the Jeep.  My shirts says it all – I Give Free Kisses – I would surely give you some if you hold me and take me to my favorite pet store for a stroll.

And do you want to hear something else that I heard here at the Hotel Thompson?  Mom/dad are sending me to Nana’s for a couple of days.  Now, I don’t mind that because we all know what happens at Nanas, stays at Nana’s if you know what I mean.

.

Where else can you go and drink from glasses during your visit?  Barks!  See, Nana lets me sip out of her drink – don’t worry there’s nothing *hard* in it… unless you count sweet tea which can sometimes be called the Champagne of the South.  Then again when I do sip from Nana’s cup and it is tea, maybe that’s why I’m so hyper – all of that sugar.  Yeah, that’s it.  Because in no way would this Yorkshire Terror be hyper – barks with puppy laughter.

But never fear my friends.  Just because mom/dad are busy playing with their friends, I did get daddy cornered for his Jokes with Daddy issue.  Hope you enjoy!

You Have *Got* to be Kidding Me

Every once in a while I come across something so outrageous – so out of this world – so incredibly stupid that I have to share.  This is one of those times my friends.  I saw this on Facebook and my first thought was, “You have got to be kidding me!”  Then I showed it to mommy.  She was like, ‘”Bacon, where do you come up with this stuff?”  Knowing these conversations, I had to share the video.  Now, how many of you are rushing to the phone to order the Licki Brush?  You better hurry up because I know they are going to sell out.  Snorts and rolls with piggy laughter.

Spotlight Thursday – Meet Doc

Spotlight Thursday

Welcome my friends to SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY.  This is the time that I will introduce you to one of my fellow anipals so you can get to know them better.  Some of them, you may already know.  We hope that you enjoy this series!

Name:  Doc Green

Age:  14 in October

Location:   Rural Victoria Australia

Web/Blog Page:  http://ourpawpad.wordpress.com/

What were your first thoughts when you met your new parents?  Look at these giants! i mean i was an itty bitty guy you know..mind you they were my Grandparents!  See they bought me for their son who was 20 ..and well he gave me my name and i spent my time with him when he was not working and such..he still lived with grannie and grandad and i used to sleep in his room on his bed..we called it the bachelor pad..even now in a different home and 14 years later when someone says bachelor pad i go looking!

What was the defining moment when you knew you were in your forever home?  Well i think when i was plopped on my Dads giant bed and surrounded by toys..i knew i had hit the jackpot!

What has been your biggest “Oh no, now I’ve done it” moment so far in your home?   Oh my .well now there have been MANY of those moments..i am a terrier after all i guess having grannie come out one night to see me counter top surfing and eating left over fish and chips…whoops…

Who do you have wrapped around your paws more – mom or dad – and why?  Well since my Dad left home i have been pretty much raised since 1 by grannie and grandad..and grannie had to stop work not long after..so i have grannie well and truly under the paw..but then grandad is a softie too..as is my Dad (Brad) ..i guess though it is grannie who is the easiest to wrap up 🙂

What’s the biggest misconception that humans think about you?  Well recently i have shown my grannie and grandad that i am not the tough guy they thought i was..i was always the “boss’ of my brother Forrest and when we were apart ever for vet stuff etc i always seemed just fine..it was Forrest who would pine..well  now my brother is gone i do miss him..and have some pretty sad days..so i think i have shown i am a softie..plus i bark like a nut at everyone who i meet but once i settle i am such a big snuggler..guess you can’t judge a dog by it’s bark.

Hope you enjoyed meeting my friend – check back next week for another Spotlight edition!

Travels in the South

Welcome back friends to another edition of Travels in the South.  We have been talking about our visit with our great friends Bill and Jean from Canadian Cats.  If you have missed the previous editions, please check them out here:  Red Lobster; Fogo de Chao; Stately Oaks; Spa Day. World of Coca-Cola Part I, World of Coca-Cola Part II. World of Coca-Cola Part III, The Varsity, Gone with the Wind Part I, Gone with the Wind Part II

Hello friends – welcome back to our continued tour of Jonesboro, Georgia in Gone With the Wind. Today, let’s talk about some of the gorgeous homes in downtown Jonesboro.

This is the Ashley Oaks Mansion that was built in 1879 by Leander Hutchenson.  Ashley Oaks is built from over over 1 million hand made bricks. Each exterior home wall is 12 inches thick and each of the four large rooms downstairs stand on its own independent foundation.  I guess they are right in the saying, “They don’t make things like they use to.”  And Leander Hutchenson – he was actually the Sheriff of Clayton County several different times throughout the years:  01/18/1860 – 02/02/1862; 09/07/1868 – 02/06/1871; 01/31/1877 – 01/07/1879; 01/08/1887 – 01/08/1891; and 01/06/1893 – 10/17/1896.  Wouldn’t it be interesting to see someone in politics take office this many times these days?

This house is the Crockett-Blalock house that was originally built in 1879.  It has been under reconstruction over the years with rooms added on and now is currently a Wells Fargo bank.  The home originally though belonged to Mrs. Hanes.  Mrs. Hanes was a tough lady.  In the middle of the Battle of Jonesboro taking place outside her doors and windows, Mrs. Hanes was giving birth to her baby.

And her husband was Alfred Blalock.  Now Alfred was a prominent heart surgeon and was the first to ever do open heart surgery.  But we found out something more about Alfred Blalock that mom found fascinating.  Alfred Blalock was also the developer of plasma for the treatment of shock.  Isn’t that totally awesome?

And you know what they say about growing up on the wrong side of the tracks.  Does that really take place?  The tracks run straight down Jonesboro.  So, depending on who you ask they will tell you which side is the right side – snorts.

But don’t worry because all streets lead you back to Gone With the Wind.  And in the end, I guess you can say in some ways that Scarlett and Rhett will always be linked together..if only in street signs 🙂

My friends, I hope that you enjoyed our tour of Jonesboro, Georgia.  Stay tuned next week to find out what additional trouble the foursome (Mom, Dad, Bill and Jean) get into.

Shopping Around the World

Welcome my friends to another edition of Shopping Around the World recipes!

This month we are opening the floor for you.  You can post ANYTHING (desserts, appetizers, snacks, entrees) that you want to share.  Just remember pictures and prices.  So what will you post my friends?  We can’t wait to see.

Now with mom/dad, sometimes the best thing they crave is a good old fashioned hamburger with french fries.  Doesn’t that sound yummy?  And mom does them in an unique way.  So, let me present Mom’s Hamburgers and Fries.

Ingredients:

Buns – we get a package of 8 for $1.00 = that makes each bun only 0.13 each.

Hamburger Meat – Mom gets a package of ground sirloin that costs around $6.50 a package.  Now one package will make 4 burgers = that’s only $1.63 per burger.

1 Tomato (which is optional).  We got big beef steak tomatoes on sale for $0.99 a pound.  One tomato costs us $1.28 and you only need one slice of the tomato per burger so the rest goes into a salad for the next day 🙂  So somewhere in the neighborhood of $0.21 per slice.

An egg.  Yep, you heard it.  1 egg for each burger.  Eggs costs $2.00 for a dozen = $0.17 each.

A baking potato because they are huge = $0.59 for one.

Now – the total price per Mom’s hamburger is around $2.75 – take that Mickey D’s restaurant.  I’m not posting all of the condiment prices because that can vary.

How to Prepare:

Mom works on the potato first to get it started  She cuts the potato in very thin slices and places in a bowl.  She then salts them rather well and starts her fry daddy oil.  Once the oil is hot, she drops the french fries into the oil to cook.  Depending on how brown/crispy you want your fries, depends on the cooking time.  Just watch them so they don’t burn.

During the cooking of your fries, plop your hamburger meat out into a bowl.  Season your meat – salt, pepper, anything you normally use.  Sometimes mom puts some Worcestershire sauce in it as well.  With your fingers, gently mix it together – but don’t overwork.  Once mixed, kind of flatten against the bottom of the bowl and with your hand make a cross sign – that way you are separating the meat into hopefully four even hamburger patties.  Get your pan (preferably an iron skillet because hey we are in the south-LOL) hot and add just a little bit of oil to cover the bottom.  Also during this time, turn your stove on around 300-350 degrees.

As your pan is warming up, take one section of your hamburger meat.  This is the time if you want to add cheese inside of your burger you would do it here.  What do I mean?  Well sometimes mom will cut a piece of cheddar cheese and then wrap the hamburger meat around the cheddar cheese covering it.  Just be careful after you cook it and bite into the burger because it will be H.O.T.  However you do it though, patty your hamburger out and make a small dimple in the middle.  Put aside and do the rest of your burgers.

Once the pan is hot, put the burgers in the pan to cook.  We prefer around medium but some like it more cooked – your choice.  While that is cooking, take your buns and put them on a cookie tray.  Butter them lightly and stick them in the oven to toast – be careful not to burn your buns.

Once the buns are done, take them out and put what condiments you want on your burger.  Once the burgers are done in the pan, take them off the burner and let them sit for a few minutes.  After they have rested a bit, build your burger.
