Renovation – Phase I

27 Apr

Hello all!  This is Bacon’s mom here.  I wanted to break down the entire renovation and share our experience of ups and downs throughout the process.  Today is Phase I which includes the start of everything.  Our house was cluttered.  Pure and simple it was.  We have been here 16 LONG years and throughout those years, we have had many surgeries, illnesses and taking care of family members that some things taken second – like the house unfortunately 😦

I was having a couple of weeks of feeling good physically. One never knows how long these days last when you have rheumatoid arthritis.  So when I told the hub unit I was ready to do it, he couldn’t believe me.  We made an appointment with the floor guy first.  We *had* to get rid of this awful carpet that had seen way better days.

The appointment was made 3/28/2015 with the flooring peeps.  They came out and we went over all of the measurements and looked at the different types of flooring that was available.  My husband gave me full reign over the remodeling so I picked a tan flooring.  We signed the paperwork and picked the date of 4/16/2015 for installation. This gave us a little under three weeks to de-clutter, purge and get the house in shape for the floor.  No small feat with what we had to work with as you can see from the pictures.

This same date, we went furniture shopping.  A joyful occasion to most… except me.  I despise shopping for anything.  The most important factor was that whatever we picked the hub had to LOVE his sofa.  I personally wanted something in the way of an oversized chair with an ottoman, etc – something that would be absolutely comfortable when I came home from work at the end of the day.  We went to a company called American Signature Furniture and picked out a sofa, an oversized chair, an ottoman and an electric fireplace mantle.  Sounds like heaven huh?  We expressed several times that the furniture had to be delivered on 4/17/2015, the day after the floor installation.

Now as you can see from these pictures of the living room, there was a LOT to clean.  I basically wanted to clear out everything and start fresh.  But in order to get to the bare basics, I had to de-clutter and separate items into (1) Keep; (2) Donate; and (3) Junk.  Just looking at the pictures you can tell that it was an overwhelming feat to start.  If anyone is in the same position as we were, two words – BABY STEPS.  I had a calendar and every night when I came home from work and on the weekends, we hit a different spot.  Slowly, things started going away.  AND, you know what we learned from all of this?  Letting go can be medicinal and therapeutic.  We made three trips alone to the Goodwill donation center down the street in the first couple of days.  I know that our garbage collection company probably thought what are they up to because we had loads of stuff we threw away.  Phase I took us the longest to get through – 9 days.

And then came the date that we asked Salvation Army to come to the house on 4/9/2015.  They actually had to make two trips because we gave it all away:  sofa, love seat, entertainment center, china cabinet, hutch, kitchen table, six chairs, rugs.

After they left, we cleaned more and started making a pile of trash.  On 4/11/2015, we had 1-800 Got Junk to come out to the house.  This junk company will come to your house and pick up your trash.  According to how much you have to fill their truck, is how much they charge you.  We had scheduled them to come out on this date between 3:30-5:30pm.  To our advantage, they were running late so (1) we got to pick up and clean more and (2) the later they were we got a discount – which is always a great thing in my book.

The company *finally* got at the Hotel Thompson around 8:30PM – which they had been calling throughout the day to keep us aware of their schedule.  I never got upset with them and it was a good thing.  Other people had in their schedule.  They came to our house and gave us a $125.00 discount for waiting.  So it cost only $100.00 for them to come in, lift and take out our final junk.  A bargain in my book because by this time we were so over lifting.

Now our neighbors had been watching all of the activity happening at our house in the pass 9 days.  Word got back to us that we were moving which we laughed off.  Nope – we were just doing some MAJOR spring cleaning.  All of this work was Phase I – come back tomorrow for Phase II my friends 🙂

Whenever I hear about somebody decluttering I wonder why I never get around to do it … I should, seriously.

We felt the same here. It was overwhelming to say the least. 16 years of deciding to keep, give away or throw away. I think this phase stressed mom out the most. XOXO – Bacon

that sounds like the sweetest song: “…my husband gave me full reign…” Bro, you have the bestest dad of the world. And that you donated so much things, is absolutely PAWsome. To separate things is the worst work ever… there is too much “keep” and only some “donate” while the “junk” box is as empty as my wallet…
Can’t wait to see Phase II :o)

Snorts. Mom stuck to the following, “Have we used this in the past year?” If no, then it was gone. Sentimental items have their spots of being kept. And then ALL furniture was donated to both charities. Mom said after a while it was very therapeutic. XOXO – Bacon

That is a MASSIVE job. We are very impressed at how organized and determined you were to be on schedule. WOW! We will never declutter around here. Mom is a thrower-away-er extraordinaire. That includes my TOYS. One wrong move and those guys get tossed, too! Sheesh.

    Love and licks,

Snorts. My mom has gotten that way with the renovation. She is trying her best to hit the other places in the house. It’s a huge job. This renovation about pushed her over the edge in doing everything in three weeks. XOXO – Bacon

WOW…….Phase I of anything is always the toughest – you have to push through it and get in the groove of tossing/sorting/dumping and that can take a lot of time and energy. Have thought about that junk company before – we may do that when the time comes for new furniture. Can’t wait for Phase II !!!!

If the furniture is to workable, please try calling Salvation Army to come get it. They are free and give you a receipt for taxes. The junk people are awesome. You just point and they do all of the lifting which is awesome. And I agree cousin. Phase I decluttering is the toughest! XOXO – Bacon

Exactly – that is what mommy said. She felt good – jump, rush and do it all quickly before her body changes it mind about her feeling well. It’s a battle indeed. Then afterwards, you pay dearly for it because your body rebels because you’ve done too much. It’s definitely an endless cycle! XOXo – Bacon

You were very organized and dedicated. Once you start a project you can’t go back but sometimes I get so cranky with the chaos in the house. This spring we will remove wallpaper in the kitchen, wash the walls and paint. I am already cranky and we haven’t even started!

I know! Trust me. Once mom started, she thought to herself, “What am I getting myself into?” She almost stopped but she kept trucking right along… and thankfully so. You know what they say about remodeling? It always looks the worse before it gets better. For a while there, it looked like a bomb had went off inside of the Hotel Thompson – snorts and rolls with piggy laughter. XOXO – Bacon

That made me tired just reading it. I did some decluttering here. Not as much as you though. Felt good to do it. I cannot wait to read the next part. Enjoy your week.

Wow!! That was a ton of work…just the DE cluttering. I see nothing wrong with your livingroom…it looks lived in. But that’s me and I’m seeing it with a cat’s eye view. Mom says it would be easier to walk when items have a home. Mom tends to stagger so I can understand her point of view.
This is amazing Bacon….you may give mom ideas.

It was lived in for sure my sweet friend. Who had time over the years when we had our hands full. But now all of that is different. This is now mom and dads time to shine, live and have fun. This was Phase I. I have to admit and don’t tell mom I said this okay. Phase I kicked my moms butt. It did dad too but he was different. He was the heavy and lifted things. Mom on the other hand had to go through everything and put in three piles for the decluttering. It was an ordeal! Wait until you see Phase II. XOXO – Bacon

Snorts. Oh our toys got a reboot as well. Some of them were clutching at deaths door. Not that this oinker had anything to do with those. Nope. Not me. XOXO – Bacon

It’s a lot better pal. Mom said I snoopervised to well one day. Mom said I cornered a workman. That’s not what happened. I was supervising a workman… who just happened to be in a corner. Who would have thought he was afraid of piggies? He jumped pretty high too when I came up behind him and snorted. XOXO – Bacon

OMD! Sorry we’re late butt we had a public holiday yesterday and mom is STILL waiting for her new yaptop.

Mom LOVES a good spring clean and purge. She gets into these “moods” and unless it is nailed down or really important it goes…it freaks dada out a little.

HIGH FIVE PAWS for a fantastic job re: Phase I. It takes A LOT of stamina to take on a big project like this.

I am very, very, very proud of all of you. It takes courage to do something like that and you pulled together and DID IT! We like to “move stuff on too” Life is much more comfortable with out piles of stuff. Plus it shows a generous heart because peeps can use the stuff you give away. 😀 ❤

I had to chuckle about the ‘moving’ rumour…boy people are quick to make statements about things they know nothing about, hahaha….
My entertainment unit collapsed on Friday, May 1st….it was 23 yrs old….It owed me nothing, lol….
I would ahve loved your old unit….hahaha!!
I am now using 2 glass top metal frame end tabless & it does not look to bad. Plus no more losing my (tuny) mind looking for a certain ‘kitty boy’s’ toys!!!!
Sorry I am so late in catching up…..
Do not feel you have to reply to any comments….I just wanted you to know I DID finally catch up 😉

I know you’ve been busy my friend!! No worries – hogs and snout kisses. I wish you were closer. You could have had first dibs to anything mom/dad was giving away. I would have made sure of it! And you are right – neighbors are hilarious. We have quite a few of them that try to stay up in our business. XOXO – Bacon

Bacon if I were any ‘busier’ I’d never eat or sleep!! For a ‘disable’ person I seem to always be busy!!!
I wish I were closer also. I LIKED the unit your parents gave away.
There are actually tenants here who feel it is their roght to gossip & get ‘all up in people’s business’. They still try it with me & I am not pleasant I can tell you.
One woman accused me of having more than Siddhartha Henry because of the outdoor condo I have for the Summer! I told her to report me! Called the head of Housing & left a message & said they could come in & check if I have more than 1 cat!
People really P*ss me off sometimes!

I agree! My mom/dad seem to be the topic of the moment in the neighborhood. We were moving. Then what do we do for a living because of all of the changes. Then we must be in trouble a lot due to the uniformed police cars that visit us. It’s ALL hilarious and we just sit back and laugh. It must be nice that no one has nothing else to do but to talk about all of us huh? XOXO – Bacon

LOL Bacon your neighborhood is as wacky & strange as mine then!!!
I always joke: Start a rumour about yourself on the West side of town & in 24 hrs it will be on the East side & nothing like what you originally said 😉
I have started a rumour about myself in the building; just for fun….
There are actually people who sit & gossip daily in our building. I do not speak to these people so how they know so much about me is amazing, ROFWL!!!!
People sometimes just dismay me I can tell you.
        ((hugs)) Sherri-Ellen
P.S.: The rumor going on here is that because I have a 2 level Condo on the patio I have more than 1 cat! I had to call housing & tell them I only have Siddhartha Henry. Thankfully the Community Relations lady has been here to meet him so she will vouch for me. Ridiculous!

Humans never seem to surprise me with their antics. And nods piggy head yes. Your hood and my hood are the same. Always wanting to start something and get a rumor out there. It’s hilarious. In fact, a funny one is with Nana. She lives 12 hours up from my Hotel Thompson. It’s always funny to hear rumors get as far as her and back to us. Shakes piggy head. I guess even busy bodies with nothing left to do during the day but talk about us have to have something to do huh? XOXO – Bacon
